Tsofar, Israel - Israeli farmers are voicing concern over Jordan’s intention not to renew parts of its landmark peace treaty with Israel that leased out two small border areas for agricultural work.Eran Baron says Monday that farmers like him have invested lots of resources and infrastructure in Ghamr, along the southern border near Aqaba, and that he would be in ruins if denied access to his crops. He says he’s yet to hear of any change in the current arrangement. If it happens, he says “we will not be able to survive here.” Jordan’s King Abdullah II says he plans to pull out of annexes from the 1994 peace agreement that allow Israel to lease Ghamr and the northern enclave of Baqura for 25 years. The leases expire next year.
Washington - White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, said on Monday the United States is still in a fact-finding phase on the murder of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and has its “eyes wide open.” Kushner, who has a close relationship with powerful Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, deflected questions in a CNN interview about whether he trusted the Saudis to investigate themselves. Saudi Arabia has given shifting explanations about what happened to Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and strong critic of the crown prince, after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2. Riyadh confirmed on Saturday he was dead and said he was killed in a fight in the building. “We’re getting facts in fro...
Hadera, Israel - A massive levayah is being planned for a decades-old Sefer Torah that was incinerated by a vandal in Hadera over the weekend. Ynet News (https://bit.ly/2OGFxTf) reported that police arrested a 35 year old local man who is believed to have entered Hadera’s Great Synagogue on Hagiborim Street sometime after Shabbos ended and removed the Torah from a secondary aron kodesh, before placing it on the floor near the bima and setting it on fire.  The charred Torah was then reportedly wrapped in garbage bags and placed with the trash, with witnesses saying that its wooden arms could be seen poking out of the bags.  The Torah was discovered by a man who came early Sunday morning to use the synagogue’s mikvah and contacted officials after seeing smoke ema...

Official Palestinian Authority television recently accused Israel of stealing falafel, hummus, and other “Palestinian foods” as part of a conspiracy against “Palestinian heritage.” The claim was made by a reporter for the PA television channel’s show Palestine This Morning on October 3, 2018 as part of a report on a local food festival, translated by Palestinian Media Watch. “We are talking about a brutal attack against the Palestinian heritage in general, including Palestinian foods,” the reporter claimed over images of a cook preparing various dishes. “There has been theft of the Palestinian falafel, the Palestinian hummus, and some popular foods by the occupation,” she added. “Holding [food] festivals like these is essentia...
The IDF discovered a Hezbollah observation post that the Lebanese terror organization attempted to conceal as part of the operation of a fictitious environmental organization "Green Without Borders," the IDF announced Monday. The post was intended to gather information and undertake forward observations for Hezbollah. A senior Northern Command official said that the discovery represents a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and that the IDF  "will not allow" such activity. This is an unforested area, the IDF officer explained, and the fake environmental organization only had military goals. Similarly, the Shi'ite organization prevents UN and UNIFIL forces from conducting investigations in the area, claiming that it is private land."From inside Israel we ...
Israel will push Jordan to reinstate an agreement between the two countries leasing two areas under Jordanian control to Israel, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Sunday. As part of the 1994 Israel-Jordan peace deal reached by then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Abdullah’s father, King Hussein, Jordan leased the land to Israel for a renewable 25-year period. Jordan retained the right, under the agreement, to nix the lease after 25 years, but is required to give Israel a one-year notification. “We have informed Israel (that we are putting) an end to the application of the peace treaty annexes regarding Baqura [Naharayim] and Ghumar [area of the Arava],” Abdullah was quoted as saying according to the Petra news agency. ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkish crime-scene investigators have arrived at an underground car park in Istanbul where authorities earlier found a vehicle belonging to the Saudi Consulate. A large police van arrived at the car park in Istanbul's Sultangazi district on Monday. News reports say the car was left there two weeks ago. Investigators looking into the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi had last week searched other consulate vehicles, along with the consulate building and the consul general's residence. Saudi Arabia said Saturday that Khashoggi was killed in a "fistfight" inside the consulate. Turkish media and officials say the 59-year-old Washington Post columnist was attacked by a 15-man Saudi team that cut off his fingers and decapitated him. His remai...
I have contemplated writing an article on this subject for close to 10 years.  Why haven’t I?  Because this subject is controversial.  What?  Controversial?  Everyone knows that high cholesterol causes heart attacks and strokes.  Well, maybe not!  It’s complicated but I think that the readers of this column need to have enough information to make an informed decision before they decide whether or not to take medications to lower cholesterol, and learn how lifestyle changes can keep your risk of heart problems in check far better than a statin drug can. This story for me started about 12 years ago. A while back, I had a personal training client who had done wonderful things for his health when we started working out and exercising together.&nb...
New York - The New York City Police Department has suspended use of a model of body camera after one exploded. The NYPD says an officer noticed smoke coming from the Vievu LE-5 body camera on Saturday night. The officer removed it and the device exploded. No one was injured. The NYPD says that the explosion revealed a potential for the battery to ignite, and that the cameras are being removed out of an abundance of caution. The 2,990 LE-5 cameras are being removed. In a statement, Axon, Vievu’s parent company, says it will do whatever is necessary to quickly and safely resolve the situation. The NYPD says more than 15,000 body cameras are deployed throughout the department. Officers using other models will continue to wear them.

Tallahassee, FL - Race, the economy, the environment and President Donald Trump were subjects of the first debate in Florida governor’s race. Former Republican U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis and Democratic Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum squared off Sunday on CNN, clearly setting out their differences. Gillum criticized DeSantis for a comment he made that Florida voters wouldn’t “monkey this up” by voting for the black mayor and implied DeSantis aligns himself with racists. DeSantis said Gillum would hurt Florida’s economy by raising taxes and hiking the minimum wage. And on Trump, Gillum criticized the president, but said he would be happy to work with him to bring money to Florida for needed projects. DeSantis replied, “That’s just not the way it wo...
JERUSALEM (AP) — In recent months, the Trump administration has repeatedly put off the release of its long-awaited Mideast peace plan. Now, the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the hands of Saudi agents may put the plan into a deep freeze. Saudi Arabia’s powerful crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, was meant to be the linchpin of the plan, providing key diplomatic cover to both Israelis and Palestinians. But with the Saudi prince’s credibility facing serious questions following Khashoggi’s death, President Donald Trump may soon have to rethink his Mideast strategy. “It definitely complicates their plans to release their proposal, if indeed they have one,” said Dan Shapiro, who served as President Barack Obama’s ambassador to Israel. T...
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Democrats are expected to reopen the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election if they win the majority in November. But they would have to be selective in what they investigate. California Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence panel, has said his party would have to “ruthlessly prioritize the most important matters first.” The Republican-led Intelligence Committee was the only House panel to investigate Russian meddling, and its investigation is now closed. Republicans say they found no evidence of collusion between Russia and President Donald Trump’s campaign. Democrats say Republicans ignored key facts and important witnesses and want to restart parts of the investigation if they win the House. ...
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says the U.S. will begin “cutting off, or substantially reducing” aid to three Central American nations over a migrant caravan heading to the U.S. southern border. Trump tweets: “Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador were not able to do the job of stopping people from leaving their country and coming illegally to the U.S.” The three countries received a combined more than $500 million in funding from the U.S. in fiscal year 2017. Trump has raised alarm over thousands of migrants traveling through Mexico to the U.S., saying, “Sadly, it looks like Mexico’s Police and Military are unable to stop the Caravan.” He adds: “I have alerted Border Patrol and Military that this is a National Emergy.&rdquo...
Boston, MA - Democratic U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren said Sunday that she changed her mind recently and took a DNA test proving her heritage because Americans’ trust in government is “at an all-time low” and she wanted to help rebuild it by being transparent. The incumbent Massachusetts senator spoke at her second debate against Republican state Rep. Geoff Diehl in the U.S. Senate race. She was asked by a moderator why she had said, in March, that no DNA test was needed to prove she had some Native American heritage. She said she ultimately took the test, reporting the result last week that showed a relative six to 10 generations ago was Native American. Ultimately, she said, she took a DNA test because she believes one way to rebuild trust in government is by posting he...
Jerusalem - Spying is getting harder because the same technologies that catch terrorists can sometimes uncover foreign intelligence operations, the director of Israel’s Mossad said on Monday. Joseph (Yossi) Cohen delivered rare public remarks at a budget conference held by Israel’s Finance Ministry. That suggested he may have emerged from the shadows to safeguard the funds and personnel allotment that, according to Israeli daily Haaretz, have made Mossad “the second largest spy organization in the West” after the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Cohen described Mossad as the tip of Israel’s spear against threats like Iranian nuclear and missile projects and Iranian backing for Palestinian Islamist Hamas militants. But, outlining challenges to covert Mossad...
Jerusalem - The Israeli military says forces shot and killed a Palestinian who attempted to stab a soldier in the West Bank. The military says troops opened fire on the Palestinian after he tried stabbing the soldier, who was lightly wounded. The incident occurred on Monday in Hebron, outside the Cave of the Patriarchs, or the Ibrahimi Mosque, a site holy to Jews and Muslims. Hebron is the West Bank’s largest city and a frequent flashpoint of Israeli-Palestinian violence. Several hundred hard-line Jewish settlers live in heavily fortified enclaves amid tens of thousands of Palestinians. Monday’s incident comes as security forces continue to search for a Palestinian who shot and killed two Israelis in a West Bank industrial park earlier this month. The area has experienced an...
