New York -  Gov. Andrew Cuomo questioned Sunday why state Republicans would have invited the founder of a far-right group to speak in Manhattan, and he blamed them and President Donald Trump for violent clashes that took place after the speech. In a conference call with reporters, the Democratic governor called the invitation to Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes to speak at the Metropolitan Republican Club a “political tactic because what they’re trying to do is fire up their base” ahead of the midterm elections. “Why would the Republican Party at their main club invite the Proud Boys,” Cuomo asked, pointing out that they have been designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The Proud Boys is made up of males who describe themselves a...
New York - He’s an Army veteran who was wounded in Afghanistan, criticizes New York’s liberal mayor and doesn’t support House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Those are winning attributes for a politician in Trump Country, but the candidate in question, Max Rose, is a Democrat trying to unseat the only Republican member of Congress from New York City. For all the national talk of a liberal “blue wave” in next month’s midterm election, Rose is part of a large corps of moderate Democrats who are playing up military experience and independence from their own party in districts that voted for President Donald Trump in 2016. “I am a Democrat, sure,” said Rose. “That does not preclude me from pointing out the fact that this country and this d...
Mexico Beach, FL - Crews with backhoes and other heavy equipment scooped up splintered boards, broken glass, chunks of asphalt and other debris in hurricane-flattened Mexico Beach on Sunday as the mayor held out hope for the 250 or so residents who may have tried to ride out the storm. The death toll from Michael’s destructive march from Florida to Virginia stood at 17, with just one confirmed death so far in this Florida Panhandle town of about 1,000 people that took a direct hit from the hurricane and its 155 mph winds last week. Crews worked to clear building debris along with the rubble from a collapsed section of the beachfront highway. Mayor Al Cathey estimated 250 residents stayed behind when the hurricane struck, and he said he remained hopeful about their fate. He said se...
Washington - China’s ambassador to the United States says he and other foreign diplomats in Washington are having a difficult time figuring out which trade advisers President Donald Trump listens to in his administration. Cui Tiankai (sway tee-yehn-KY’) was asked on “Fox News Sunday” about trade tensions between the economic powers and if he was clear whether the president follows the guidance of trade moderates or hard-liners. The envoy replied, “You tell me.” Cui added, “Honestly, I’ve been talking to ambassadors of other countries in Washington, D.C., and this is also part of their problem.” He says the diplomats “don’t know who is the final decision-maker. Of course, presumably, the president will take the final deci...
Washington - President Donald Trump is backing off his claim that climate change is a hoax but says he doesn’t know if it’s manmade and suggests that the climate will “change back again.” In an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes” that aired Sunday night, Trump said he doesn’t want to put the U.S. at a disadvantage in responding to climate change. “I think something’s happening. Something’s changing and it’ll change back again,” he said. “I don’t think it’s a hoax. I think there’s probably a difference. But I don’t know that it’s manmade. I will say this: I don’t want to give trillions and trillions of dollars. I don’t want to lose millions and millions of jobs.&rdquo...
Jerusalem - The Israeli military says Israeli troops have shot and killed a Palestinian after he attempted to stab a soldier in the West Bank. The military says the alleged attacker did not wound any soldiers during Monday’s incident. It says troops fired toward him and the he was “neutralized and killed.” The incident comes as security forces continue to search for a Palestinian who shot and killed two Israelis in a West Bank industrial park last week before fleeing the scene. The military also notified the man’s family on Monday that it intends to demolish his home in response to the attack. Israel has faced a three-year wave of Palestinian attacks that in recent months have dwindled but still occur. Critics say Israel uses excessive force against Palestinian a...
Quneitra, Syria - A vital border crossing between Jordan and Syria reopened on Monday for the first time in three years, promising to restore trade and movement between the two countries that had halted because of the war. Another crossing, between Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, also reopened for U.N. observers who had left the area four years ago because of fighting there. The reopening of the crossings is a major boost to the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad, restoring a commercial lifeline to the outside world. It also reinforces the Syrian government’s message that it is slowly emerging victorious from the seven-year conflict. “The general mutual interest that these crossings create between the people is what lasts and therefore we look at this b...
Mexico Beach, FL - Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Brock Long is calling the damage left by Hurricane Michael some of the worst he’s ever seen. Long toured several towns in Florida’s Panhandle on Sunday with Gov. Rick Scott. Long said afterward the storm damage will require officials to help meet housing needs of displaced residents for the next several months. Long previously said that he has expected the death toll to rise due to the deadly storm. But both he and Scott sidestepped questions on whether they anticipate more deaths to be announced in the days ahead. Long also added that FEMA employees were going to start going through shelters and in damaged neighborhoods to start registering people for federal assistance that is available to residents after a disas...
WASHINGTON (AP) — That “Pocahontas” taunt must have rankled. Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s release Monday of a DNA analysis that she does indeed have Native American ancestry is a pointed pushback to Donald Trump’s derisive nickname for her. It also looks like an attempt by the Massachusetts Democrat to defuse the issue ahead of a potential 2020 challenge to Trump. A look at what’s known about Warren and her Native American heritage. ___ WHY WARREN’S ANCESTRY MATTERS The first-term Democratic senator’s critics have accused Warren of advancing her career by claiming minority status as a descendant of Cherokee and Delaware tribes. Warren, 69, was born in Oklahoma and went on to become a professor at Harvard Law School. It’s not clear Warr...
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Monday he had spoken with Saudi Arabia’s king, who “denies any knowledge” of what happened to the Saudi journalist who disappeared after entering the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago. Trump said he had dispatched Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the region. What did happen to Jamal Khashoggi, according to the king? Trump said, “He didn’t really know. Maybe I don’t want to get into his mind, but it sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers -- I mean, who knows?” Trump has been under pressure to take action on the suspected murder of journalist Khashoggi, a Saudi citizen who has been living and writing in the United States, including columns critical of Saudi...
ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkish and Saudi investigators on Monday began conducting what Turkish officials have said is a joint "inspection" of the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, where Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi went missing nearly two weeks ago. The team arrived by unmarked police car and said nothing to journalists waiting outside as international concern continues to grow over the writer's disappearance. American lawmakers have threatened tough punitive action against the Saudis, and Germany, France and Britain have jointly called for a "credible investigation" into Khashoggi's disappearance. A Foreign Ministry official had earlier said the team would visit the diplomatic post Monday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government regulations. Official...
Seoul - North and South Korea continued their push for peace Monday with high-level talks that resulted in a host of agreements, including a plan by the rivals for a groundbreaking ceremony this year on an ambitious project to connect their railways and roads. The agreements come amid unease in Washington over the speed of inter-Korean engagement. Many outsiders believe that U.S.-led efforts to rid the North of its nuclear-tipped missiles are lagging significantly behind the Koreas’ efforts to move past decades of bitter rivalry. A series of weapons tests by North Korea last year, and an exchange of insults and threats between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, had many on the Korean Peninsula fearing war. But there has since been a surprising peace initiat...

NEW YORK (AP) — Sears has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, buckling under its massive debt load and staggering losses. Sears once dominated the American retail landscape. But the big question is whether the shrunken version of itself can be viable or will it be forced to go out of business, closing the final chapter for an iconic name that originated more than a century ago. Holdings will also close 142 unprofitable stores near the end of the year. Liquidation sales at these stores are expected to begin shortly. This is in addition to the previously announced closure of 46 unprofitable stores that is expected to be completed by November 2018. The company, which started out as a mail order catalog in the 1880s, has been on a slow march toward extinction as it lagged far ...

Jerusalem - Israel’s prime minister is threatening “very painful blows” against Gaza’s Hamas rulers if they don’t halt protests along the perimeter fence that have led to clashes with Israeli troops. Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel is very close to waging a “different kind of activity” against the Islamic militants. He says “if it has any sense, Hamas will cease its fire and violent outbursts — now.” Hamas has orchestrated near-weekly protests along the Israel-Gaza boundary since March, pressing for an end to a decade-long Israel-Egyptian blockade of the isolated territory. On Friday, some 20 Palestinians breached the border. Israeli troops shot dead seven at that location. Israel and Hamas have fought three wars ov...
Brooklyn, NY - An unidentified man is under arrest and the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force has been called in after a Chasidic man was viciously beaten this morning in broad daylight in what appears to be an unprovoked attack on 13th Avenue. Sources who spoke to VIN News on condition of anonymity said that Lipa Schwartz was walking to the synagogue just after 7:15 this morning when the sounds of a car screeching down the avenue between 45th and 46th streets had him stopping in his tracks. Surveillance video shows the car service driver running out of a black four door sedan directly at Schwartz, hitting him in the head multiple times. Attempting to flee his attacker, Schwartz ran into 46th Street intersection where the car service driver continued to beat him, punching him in the he...
Jerusalem - An Ali Express shipment turned out to be no bargain for a Beitar Illit family when four people who came into contact with an unknown powdery substance were hospitalized after reporting feeling dizzy and light headed. United Hatzalah spokesperson Raphael Poch said that paramedics were called to the family home on HaRebbe M’Zvhil Street on Sunday afternoon. A 47 year old mother, her 20 year old daughter, and two sons, ages 17 and seven, all reported feeling ill after two packages from a larger Ali Express order had been opened in the home. Israel Fire and Rescue were called to clear the home of any lingering fumes and to investigate the powder which was later identified as magnesium carbonate.  According to the National Institute of Health, severe reactions to magn...
