Jerusalem - Iran asked the United Nations to condemn what it described as Israeli nuclear threats against it on Thursday, while Israel said it was stepping up security around its atomic sites as a precaution against threats from Tehran and its regional allies. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used a visit to a secretive Israeli atomic reactor in August to warn the country’s enemies that it has the means to destroy them, in what appeared to be a reference to its assumed nuclear arsenal. “The United Nations’ members should not turn a blind eye to these threats and must take firms actions to eliminate all Israeli nuclear weapons,” Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gholamali Khoshrou said in letters to the U.N. secretary general and the security ...
New York - Delta Airlines Inc, the second-largest U.S. airline, on Wednesday joined other major airlines in hiking domestic flight baggage fees by $5 per bag to $30. The price hike follows similar moves by United Continental Holdings Inc and JetBlue Airways Corp in August and comes as Congress is considering whether to require the U.S. Transportation Department to assess whether airline baggage and ticket change fees are “reasonable and proportional.” Delta, United and JetBlue are now charging $30 for the first checked bag on domestic routes, up from $25 previously, and $40 for the second bag, up from $35. Airlines have cited rising costs as a concern, with high fuel prices and bumps in salaries and benefits for pilots, flight attendants and mechanics pushing up operating ex...
New York - John Hancock, one of the oldest and largest North American life insurers, will stop underwriting traditional life insurance and instead sell only interactive policies that track fitness and health data through wearable devices and smartphones, the company said on Wednesday. The move by the 156-year-old insurer, owned by Canada’s Manulife Financial Corp, marks a major shift for the company, which unveiled its first interactive life insurance policy in 2015. It is now applying the model across all of its life coverage. Interactive life insurance, pioneered by John Hancock’s partner the Vitality Group, is already well-established in South Africa and Britain and is becoming more widespread in the United States. Beirut - The leader of Lebanon’s militant Hezbollah boasted Thursday the group now possesses “highly accurate” missiles despite Israeli attempts to prevent it from acquiring such weapons. Hassan Nasrallah didn’t offer specifics on the weapons in his traditional televised speech commemorating Ashoura, a top religious holy day for Shiite Muslims. He told supporters they need to be confident in Hezbollah’s capabilities and that the regional balance of power has changed. He claimed Israeli strikes in Syria to prevent Hezbollah from acquiring precise missiles were ineffective. “I tell (Israel) no matter what it did to cut the route, it is over. It has already been achieved,” he said, adding that Hezbollah “now possesses precision missiles and n...
Los Angeles, CA - Los Angeles would become the largest city in the U.S. to ban the sale of fur products if the City Council approves a proposed law backed by animal activists who say the multibillion-dollar fur industry is rife with cruelty. The council was expected Tuesday to direct the city attorney to draft a law prohibiting the manufacture or sale of fur products in the city. The ban would cover apparel made in whole or in part of fur — including clothing, handbags, shoes, hats, earmuffs, jewelry and keychains. Only used fur products could be sold. The law would take effect two years after passage. It’s unclear when the ordinance might come before the council for a vote. Councilmen Bob Blumenfield and Paul Koretz submitted the motion. Comptroller Peter Franchot, who earlier said he would stay neutral in the governor's race, recently said he wouldn't even cast a vote in the contest. Jealous, who upset establishment pick Rushern Baker in Maryland's primary, has the support of just 48 percent of Democratic likely voters, while 38 percent said they would cross the ...
A Towson man and two Texas men were indicted last week on conspiracy, wire fraud and other charges related to an alleged $364 million investment fraud scheme. Ledford, 54, of Westlake, Texas and Las Vegas; and Cameron R. Jezierski, 28, of Fort Worth, Texas. Merrill and Ledford each made an initial appearance in federal courtrooms on Tuesday in Baltimore and Las Vegas, respectively, and were ordered detained. Jerusalem - Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, is a time when many non-regular Israeli synagogue-goers take time to pray. It is also an annual opportunity for children to ride their bicycles on deserted streets. Almost all Israeli road traffic stops on Yom Kippur as most of the country’s Jewish majority refrains from driving. Roads and main highways are deserted and left clear for children to enjoy without much fear of encountering a motor vehicle. On Wednesday, scores of children went out to ride their bicycles, scooters and skateboards on a main road that separates the Israeli urban settlement of Pisgat Zeev from the Palestinian neighborhood of Beit Hanina, both in East Jerusalem. Israeli children rode freely on the main road that leads into the heart of Jerus...
Brooklyn, NY - A 4-year-old boy is in critical condition after being struck by a car in Brooklyn Wednesday. It happened around 2:30 p.m. on 13th Avenue in Borough Park. Authorities say it appears that Ari Fisher ran into the street and was hit by a Dodge Caravan. Ari was conscious and alert but suffered serious head trauma. It does not appear the injuries are life threatening, and the child was rushed to Maimonides Hospital in critical but stable condition. The driver, a 20-year-old woman, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police. The exact circumstances of the accident are unclear, and the investigation is ongoing. At this point, there appears to be no criminality.
Moscow - Russian President Vladimir Putin has accepted Israel’s offer to share detailed information on the Israeli airstrike in Syria that triggered fire by Syrian forces which downed a Russian reconnaissance plane, the Kremlin said Wednesday. Syrian forces mistook the Russian Il-20 for Israeli aircraft, killing all 15 people aboard Monday night. Russia’s Defense Ministry blamed the plane’s loss on Israel, but Putin sought to defuse tensions, pointing at “a chain of tragic accidental circumstances.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Putin on Tuesday to express sorrow over the death of the plane’s crew and blamed Syria. Syrian President Bashar Assad sent Putin a telegram Wednesday offering his condolences and putting the blame on Israeli ...
PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — The two Korean leaders took to the road for the final day of their summit Thursday, heading to a beautiful volcano considered sacred in the North and used in its propaganda to legitimize the Kims' three generations of rule. Their trip followed a day of wide-ranging agreements they trumpeted as a major step toward peace on the Korean Peninsula. However, their premier accord on the issue most fascinating and worrisome — the North's pursuit of nuclear-tipped missiles that can accurately strike the U.S. mainland — contained a big condition: Kim Jong Un stated he would permanently dismantle North Korea's main nuclear complex only if the United States takes unspecified corresponding measures.  Kim and South Korean President Mo...

MIDDLETON, Wis. (AP) — A heavily armed man opened fire on his co-workers at a Wisconsin software company Wednesday, seriously wounding three people before being fatally shot by police as employees ran from the building or hid inside, according to investigators. Middleton Police Chief Chuck Foulke said officers shot the man within eight minutes of receiving calls about an active shooter at WTS Paradigm. Foulke said the man was armed with a semi-automatic pistol and extra ammunition, and fired at officers before he was shot. Foulke said three people were seriously injured during the attack, while a fourth person was grazed by a bullet. Baltimore, MD - Sept. 18, 2018 -  In an effort to make Baltimore City streets safer, some City Council members are proposing a speed limit bill. Councilman Ryan Dorsey has two theories: lower speed limits will lead to slower drivers and slower drivers will lead to fewer crashes. Legislation was introduced to the full City Council Monday. If passed, it would cap the legal speed limit to 25 mph on several main streets, such as Harford and York roads. Local roads would be capped at 20 mph and alleyways would cap at 15 mph. Dorsey said there is a culture of permissiveness that is creating unsafe driving conditions. "There was a recent report from AllState Insurance that said Baltimore has the worst drivers in the country. If we look at other reports, there's one from th...

Russian president Vladimir Putin has described the downing of a Russian military plane in Syria as “like a chain of tragic accidental circumstances”, in a measured statement that appeared to step back from earlier threats of direct retaliation against Israel made by his defence ministry. “When people die, especially in such tragic circumstances, it’s always a disaster — for us all, for the country, for our close comrades,” Putin said in his first remarks on the incident. The Russian president said that comparisons should not be drawn with the 2015 shooting down of a Russian fighter jet by Turkish aircraft, which prompted economic retaliation from Moscow and a freezing of diplomatic relations. “As for your comparison with the well-known events, w...
North Dakota - The Republican Jewish Coalition launched a $1 million television and digital advertising campaign in North Dakota against its incumbent senator over her support for the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.. The campaign targeting Heidi Heitkamp, a Democrat, was launched last week and will air throughout September in the Fargo and Minot markets. Titled “Roots,” the ad says that Heitkamp abandoned her “North Dakota values” by “siding with liberals and her party to support the disastrous Iran deal.” “Those are not our values, they are their values,” the ad continues, showing photos of Heitkamp and three key Democratic supporters of the agreement. “Heidi Heitkamp voted for the Iran deal, putting party loyalty above American security a...
