WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — With Wilmington cut off from the rest of North Carolina by still-rising floodwaters from Florence, officials plan to airlift food and water to the city of nearly 120,000 people as rescuers elsewhere pull inland residents from homes threatened by swollen rivers. The spreading disaster claimed additional lives Sunday, with at least 17 people confirmed dead, and the nation’s top emergency official said other states were in the path this week. “Not only are you going to see more impact across North Carolina ... but we’re also anticipating you are about to see a lot of damage going through West Virginia, all the way up to Ohio as the system exits out,” Brock Long of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said Sunday on Fox News. Jerusalem - Israel has released an American law professor detained for allegedly trying to block Israeli troops in a West Bank village slated for demolition. The 66-year-old Frank Romano was detained on Friday in the embattled village of Khan al-Ahmar, along with two Palestinian activists. Witnesses said that Romano stood in front of heavy equipment being used to clear barriers that had been set up to slow demolition. Activists said he began a hunger strike while in detention. Gaby Lasky, Romano’s lawyer, said a court ordered his release Sunday. She said he was freed early Monday after police decided not to appeal the decision. Upon his release, Romano returned to the village and said: “I can continue the struggle with you.” Israel is expected to demolish the village...
Hazlet, NJ - Authorities say two swimmers drowned in New Jersey while trying to rescue another man who was later saved by police. The men were all swimming in the Thornes Creek in Hazlet when one of them started yelling for help around 2:40 p.m. Sunday. The two other men went to help the one who was struggling, but they soon went under and didn’t surface. Police soon found the first swimmer near the water’s edge. He was taken to a hospital. The bodies of the two other swimmers were found later Sunday. Authorities have not said whether the men knew one another.
Baltimore, MD, Sept. 17, 2018 — The Coalition for Jewish Values (CJV), representing over 1000 traditional Rabbis in American public policy, today condemned the National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) for granting an award to a book "rife with anti-Semitic smears and demonization of moral conduct." The NWSA this year co-awarded its annual Alison Piepmeier Book Prize to The Right to Maim: Debility, Capacity, Disability, by Jasbir Puar. Puar, an associate professor of women's and gender studies at Rutgers University, writes that the "Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have shown a demonstrable pattern over decades of sparing life, of shooting to maim rather than to kill." But rather than commending this humane policy, the author calls it a "purportedly humanitarian practice" a...
Gush Etzion, Israel - He was recalled as a loving son, a dedicated brother, a devoted husband and a caring father, whose love for his country and thirst for Torah were practically insatiable. Ari Fuld, Z'L, H'yd, was accompanied to his final resting place by thousands of stunned mourners just hours after chasing down and shooting the teenager who mortally stabbed him in order to prevent his attacker from harming others. Fuld’s funeral began shortly before midnight with high ranking Israeli officials including Chief Rabbi Dovid Lau, American Ambassador David Friedman and Minister of Agriculture Uri Uriel among those who came to pay their respects to the Efrat resident. Heartrending wails and sobs ripped through the night as multiple family members eulogized Fuld, with spe...

Today we lost a hero. It took me a while to realize the magnitude of this loss. Ari Fuld, Z'L, H'yd, was a hero in all senses of the word. Loving and living the Kedushas Eretz Yisroel. I knew some of his incredible work and being inspired by his talks helped instill in me that feeling of yearning to return home. May Hashem welcome him into Gan Eden with open arms and bring Nechama (comfort) to his entire family. I don’t do this often but I had a little moment of inspiration to pen a quick tribute song. Please enjoy it and do a Mitzvah in his Zchus.
LONDON (AP) — Police closed roads and called a hazardous response team Sunday night after two people became ill at a restaurant in the English city where a Russian ex-spy and his daughter were poisoned with a chemical nerve agent. Wiltshire Police described the emergency steps taken in response to "a medical incident" in Salisbury as a precaution. Authorities later lifted the alert and said no evidence of the nerve agent Novichok involved in the earlier case was found when the two ill people were examined at a hospital. Salisbury spent months with quarantine tents and investigators in full-body protective gear combing for evidence after Sergei Skripal and his adult daughter were found unconscious on a bench in March. Its residents were put back on edge in June when a man and a wom...

Manchester, New England - In a rare display of community solidarity, more than 2,500 Jews demonstrated here Sunday against the rising tide of antisemitism in the UK, and in particular their discontent with Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn. Politicians from both the Conservative and Labour parties addressed the crowd, as did the UK’s Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis. “Six months ago the outstanding decision was made by the Jewish community in London to protest in front of Parliament. Ever since, the situation has only worsened, so we felt that, as the second biggest Jewish community in the UK, it was Manchester’s turn to say enough is enough,” Raphi Bloom, co-chair of North West Friends of Israel, one of the organizers of the protest, told The Jerusalem Post. “P...
WASHINGTON (AP) — A Republican member of the Senate Judiciary Committee says he's "not comfortable" voting in favor of Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court until he learns more about the  assault allegation against Kavanaugh dating to when he was in high school. Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake tells Politico and The Washington Post in interviews Sunday that the closely divided committee needs to hear from Kavanaugh's accuser, Christine Blasey Ford. Ford told her story to The Washington Post in a piece published Sunday. Kavanaugh denies her allegations. Flake is one of 11 Republicans on the Judiciary Committee, which has scheduled a Thursday vote on Kavanaugh's nomination. But the nomination's prospects would become complicated without Flake'...
WASHINGTON (AP) — Time Magazine is being sold by Meredith Corp. to Marc Benioff, a co-founder of Salesforce, and his wife. The Wall Street Journal reported that the iconic news magazine is being sold for $190 million to Benioff, one of four co-founders of Salesforce, a cloud computing pioneer. The sale is occurring nearly eight months after Meredith Corp. completed its purchase of Time Inc. Meredith, the publisher of such magazines as People and Better Homes & Gardens, had put four Time Inc. publications up for sale in March. Negotiations for the sale of the three other publications — Fortune, Money and Sports Illustrated — are continuing.

The Hungarian government announced last week that the ownership and management of the new Holocaust museum, scheduled to open in Budapest next year, will be transferred to EMIH - Hungarian Jewish Federation in Hungary, affiliated with Chabad. The decision aims to resolve a years-long dispute between the Hungarian government and Mazsihisz, the Federation of Jewish communities in Hungary, associated with the ‘Neolog’ community. (the Hungarian equivalent of Reform Judaism) Mazsihisz had opposed the appointment of a historian responsible for the content displayed in the museum. Rabbi Shlomo Koves, the chief rabbi of the EMIH - Hungarian Jewish Federation, noted that “transferring ownership to the Jewish community is intended to end the dispute by del...
Miami - Before and after a hurricane, Ace is the place. And Home Depot and Lowe’s. And many other hardware and building supply outlets. Not surprisingly, these companies plan for storms such as Hurricane Florence all year. Much like the Federal Emergency Management Agency, supplies are pre-positioned and trucks loaded and ready to go with everything from batteries to gas cans to tarps to chainsaws. Here’s the thing: the government can only do so much. Most people must fend for themselves at some point, and the local hardware or building supply store is where they go. Not everything is available easily online. Try to buy some drywall that way. “It’s a year-round thing for us,” said Margaret Smith, spokeswoman for Atlanta-based Home Depot. “When it&rsqu...
NEW YORK (AP) — The number of Americans with flood insurance is on the rise, yet Hurricane Florence is likely to make it painfully clear that too many homeowners in the Carolinas and other vulnerable regions remain unprotected. . An analysis of federal flood insurance records by The Associated Press found there were roughly 5.1 million active flood insurance policies in the U.S. as of July 31, up from 4.94 million a year earlier. The Carolinas had modest gains — a 2.5 percent increase in South Carolina and a 3.5 percent increase in North Carolina. But large gaps in coverage remain. South Carolina is the second-highest insured state for flooding, with roughly 65 percent of properties in flood hazard areas insured. But in North Carolina, where forecasters say the storm might b...
WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Catastrophic flooding from Florence spread across the Carolinas on Sunday, with roads to Wilmington cut off by the epic deluge and muddy river water swamping entire neighborhoods miles inland. “The risk to life is rising with the angry waters,” Gov. Roy Cooper declared as the storm’s death toll climbed to 15. The storm continued to crawl westward, dumping more than 30 inches of rain in spots since Friday, and fears of historic flooding grew. Tens of thousands were ordered evacuated from communities along the state’s steadily rising rivers — with the Cape Fear, Little River, Lumber, Waccamaw and Pee Dee rivers all projected to burst their banks. In Wilmington, with roads leading in and out of the city underwater and streams still...
