NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer, could be charged before the end of the month with bank fraud in his dealings with the taxi industry and with committing other financial crimes, two people familiar with the federal probe said Monday. The people confirmed reports that federal prosecutors in Manhattan were considering charging Cohen after months of speculation over a case that has been a distraction for the White House with the midterm elections approaching. The people, who weren’t authorized to discuss the case and spoke on Monday on condition of anonymity, refused to answer questions about speculation that Cohen still might strike a plea deal with prosecutors requiring his cooperation. Absent a quick resolution, it’s ...
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s personal attorney says he wasn’t trying to make an existential point about the meaning of veracity when he declared “truth isn’t truth.” Rudy Giuliani’s puzzling statement on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, following one by another Trump aide last year about “alternative facts,” suggested that people in Trump’s orbit might be denying the existence of reality. Giuliani says his intent was more mundane: to make the case that having Trump sit down for an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller’s team wouldn’t accomplish much because of the conflicting nature of witnesses’ recollections. “My statement was not meant as a pontification on mor...

Washington - President Donald Trump on Monday dared former CIA Director John Brennan to take legal action to try to prevent him from stripping security clearances from other current and former officials. “I hope John Brennan, the worst CIA Director in our country’s history, brings a lawsuit,” Trump tweeted. “It will then be very easy to get all of his records, texts, emails and documents to show not only the poor job he did, but how he was involved with” the Russia probe led by special counsel Robert Mueller. “He won’t sue!” The war of words between Trump and Brennan continued as scores more former U.S. national security employees joined a wave of opposition to the president’s threat to continue pulling clearances. To date, more than ...
Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani refuted speculation Sunday that White House counsel Donald McGahn had flipped on President Trump, accusing “desperate” investigators of leaking information about the attorney’s cooperation with the special counsel in order to lure the president into a perjury trap. The New York Times, citing multiple unidentified sources, reported Saturday that Mr. McGahn had spent 30 hours over three days answering questions as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference. Trump attorney John Dowd said Mr. McGahn was actually a “terrific witness” for the president, dismissing speculation to the contrary as “pure fiction.” “They’re down to desperation time,” Mr. Giul...
Union City NJ - The predicted traffic apocalypse caused by a major road-and-bridge project leading to New York City was a spectacular dud, at least during Day One’s morning rush on Monday. Cars streamed along Route 495 toward the Lincoln Tunnel on the first full day of lane closures to accommodate the rebuilding and resurfacing of the 80-year-old viaduct that connects the New Jersey Turnpike to the tunnel. Just outside the tunnel in Union City, where extra police were deployed to oversee busy intersections, the traffic was orderly, almost calm, as commuters hurried to catch shuttle buses into the city. “Smooth sailing this morning,” one commuter tweeted. Another wrote, “It’s the heart of #rushhour and there is NO traffic approaching the #LincolnTunnel. What...
A speechwriter and policy aide has left the White House after CNN’s KFile uncovered that he had spoken at a conference mostly attended by white nationalists. Darren Beattie appeared on a panel with well-known white nationalist Peter Brimelow, the founder of of the anti-immigration website Vdare, at the 2016  H.L. Mencken Club Conference, a small annual gathering popular with white nationalists like Richard Spencer and others on the alt-right. (The conference’s namesake, Mencken, was a satirist and journalist whose posthumously published diaries also revealed him to be an anti-semite and racist.) When CNN asked the White House to comment on Beattie’s involvement in the conference, they dragged their feet and asked them to hold the story. A few day...
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is currently meeting with US National Security Adviser John Bolton, at the Prime minister's Office in Jerusalem. National Security Council Director Meir Ben-Shabbat, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and Israeli Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer are also participating. Prime Minister Netanyahu made the following remarks at the start of the meeting: "Ambassador Bolton, John, once again it's a pleasure to welcome you to Jerusalem. Particularly since your visit comes after the historic decision by President Trump to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, to move the Embassy here. As I mentioned last night we've known each other for many decades and you've been a consistent champion of our alliance in and out of government. It...
Stress is a subject that I write about from time to time because I see all too often the damage it does to our health and wellbeing.  I see it from clients and I see it with friends.  And we happen to live in a society where the demands made upon us are unreasonable.  Whether your stress originates in the workplace, Yeshiva, family relationships, or a host of other areas, what we do know for sure is that long-term activation of the stress response system can disrupt almost all of the body’s processes and increase the risk of numerous health problems.   Exercise, diet and sleep are definitely major factors in controlling our stress.  Ahron is a client who came for weight loss.  It became very apparent at our first meeting that he was under a lot of ...
JERUSALEM (AP) — President Donald Trump's national security adviser is bemoaning the "wretched" Iranian nuclear deal in his talks with Israel's prime minister. John Bolton told Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday that the United States sees the "highest importance" in preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and that's why Trump withdrew from the deal negotiated by the Obama administration and was reapplying stiff sanctions. Netanyahu agreed the deal was "disastrous" and called Trump's decision to drop out historic. Bolton has been a strident critic of the nuclear deal and has pushed for greater pressure on Tehran to ensure it halts its support for militant groups in the Mideast and stops development of ballistic missiles. A former ambassador to the United Natio...
JERUSALEM (AP) — Uri Avnery, a trailblazing Israeli journalist and peace activist and one of the first to openly advocate for a Palestinian state, died Monday at the age of 94. Avnery passed away at a Tel Aviv hospital after suffering a stroke. For decades, he was a symbol of the Israeli peace camp, easily recognized by his thick white beard and white hair. A member of Israel's founding generation, he fought in the pre-state Irgun underground militia. After independence, he became a publisher, member of parliament, author and activist. In the 1982 Lebanon War, Avnery famously sneaked into besieged Beirut to talk to Israel's then-nemesis, PLO chairman Yasser Arafat. Avnery challenged successive Israeli governments in arguing that a Palestinian state was the only way to s...
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The 92-year-old South Korean woman wept and stroked the wrinkled cheeks of her 71-year-old North Korean son on Monday, their first meeting since they were driven apart during the turmoil of the 1950-53 Korean War. "How many children do you have? Do you have a son?" Lee Keum-seom asked her son Ri Sang Chol during their long-awaited encounter at the North's Diamond Mountain resort. The emotional reunion came after dozens of elderly South Koreans crossed the heavily fortified border into North Korea to meet temporarily with their relatives. The weeklong event, the first of its kind in nearly three years, was arranged as the rival Koreas boost reconciliation efforts amid a diplomatic push to resolve a standoff over North Korea's nuclear weapons progr...
Istanbul - The U.S. Embassy in Turkey was shot at from a moving car before dawn on Monday, an attack that came during heightened tensions between the two NATO allies. There were no casualties and no claim of responsibility for the fleeting attack, in which three of the six bullets that were fired hit the embassy gate and a reinforced window. “We can confirm a security incident took place at the U.S. Embassy early this morning. We have no reports of any injuries and we are investigating the details” embassy spokesman David Gainer said. He thanked Turkish police for their “rapid response.” Turkish officials, who are locked in a trade and diplomatic dispute with the United States, condemned the shooting in Ankara, the capital. Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin t...
PULA, Croatia (AP) — The rescuers of a British woman who fell from a cruise ship and spent 10 hours in the Adriatic Sea at night say it’s a miracle that she’s alive. The captain of the Croatian rescue ship that found Kay Longstaff, 46, floating some 95 kilometers (60 miles) off Croatia’s coast says “luckily for her we saw her immediately because she raised and waved her hands when she saw us.” Lovro Oreskovic tells the Glas Istre portal on Monday that Longstaff told the crew that she practices yoga and that she sang while floating to stay awake. She says she fell from the back of the Norwegian Star cruise ship shortly before midnight Saturday. Some 10 hours later, she was rescued and taken to a hospital in the town of Pula.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan forces launched a lightning operation in northern Kunduz province on Monday, rescuing 149 people, including women and children, abducted by the Taliban just hours earlier, officials said. By mid-afternoon, fighting was still underway in the area to free 21 remaining hostages, officials added. The operation was a boost for Afghan forces, which have struggled to contain a resurgent Taliban on battlefields across the country. On Monday morning, the Taliban ambushed a convoy of three buses travelling on a road in the Khan Abad district, and forced everyone to come with them, according to Nasrat Rahimi, deputy spokesman for the Interior Ministry. Rahimi said that after Afghan security forces freed 149, the insurgents were still holding 21 hostages from...
NEW YORK (AP) — The bull market in U.S. stocks is about to become the longest in history. If stocks don’t drop significantly by the close of trading Wednesday, the bull market that began in March 2009 will have lasted nine years, five months and 13 days, a record that few would have predicted when the market struggled to find its footing after a 50 percent plunge during the financial crisis. The long rally has added trillions of dollars to household wealth, helping the economy, and stands as a testament to the ability of large U.S. companies to squeeze out profits in tough times and confidence among investors as they shrugged off repeated crises and kept buying. “There was no manic trading, there was no panic buying or selling,” said Jack Ablin, chief investment ...
BALTIMORE (AP) — The portrait used to hang in the hallway, welcoming children and parents to the Archbishop Borders School in Baltimore: a smiling Dr. Ben Carson in surgical scrubs, rubbing together the careful, steady hands that helped him become the nation’s most famous black doctor. “The person who has the most to do with your success is you,” it reads. That was before Carson’s presidential bid, before he withdrew from the race and endorsed Donald Trump, and before he was tapped to run the Department of Housing and Urban Development. It was before the president failed to condemn white supremacists who marched in Charlottesville, Virginia. And before Carson pushed policies critics say walk back civil rights protections for those living in subsidized housin...
PepisCo announces plans to buy Israel-based SodaStream at $144 a share, with a total price tag of $3.2 billion. Israel’s SodaStream is about to be picked up by one of the world’s largest beverage producers in a multi-billion dollar deal. PepsiCo, which produces not only Pepsi Cola but a wide range of snacks, beverages, and other food products ranging from Lipton Teas to Cheetos to Quaker brand oatmeal products, announced Monday morning its plans to acquire SodaStream at $144 a share – a 32% premium over SodaStream’s estimated stock value before the deal. The total value of the acquisition is $3.2 billion, PepsiCo said. SodaStream, which was initially based in the town of Mishor Adumim, east of Jerusalem, relocated across the Green Line in 2015 to pre-1967 ...
Senior Hamas officials say talks with Israel via proxies making progress, deal likely by next week. Sources within the Hamas terror group say the Gaza-based organization is making progress in its talks with Israel, which are currently being conducted through Egypt, adding that a ceasefire deal is likely to be signed next week, following the end of the Eid al-Adha holiday Saturday night. According to a report by Israel Hayom on Monday, senior Hamas officials say that while Palestinian Authority leaders including Mahmoud Abbas continue to oppose negotiations between Hamas and Israel outside of the framework of a broader deal with the PA, the two sides are close to an agreement, with a series of mutual ‘understandings’ to be signed by both sides. A senior PA official...
