New York - New York City, the largest American market for Uber, is becoming the first U.S. city to regulate the growth of app-based rides. Uber drivers lined up for hours to register their cars Monday, the day before Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio was expected to sign a bill placing a temporary cap on new licenses, according to The New York Times. Once the legislation becomes law, no new licenses will be granted for a year, with the exception of wheelchair accessible vehicles. The City Council approved a package of bills that included the moratorium while the city studies the rapidly changing industry. The legislation also will allow the city to set a minimum wage for app-based drivers. Backers of the proposals said both the traditional yellow cab industry and drivers for app-based se...

A few months ago my family celebrated a milestone anniversary for our parents. In the spirit of the day, I went to composer Hershy Weinberger with the words that the Lubavitcher Rebbe told my parents before their wedding, like he told so many young new couples. “Make it bright and warm for those around you, and Hashem will make it bright and warm for you!”
The Belgian city’s fire department in Antwerp have agreed to replenish the dried up Stadspark pond in the centrally located Stadspark so that local Jews can perform Tashlich on Rosh Hashanah, JTA reports. The pond had dried up because of the extreme heat wave recorded in recent weeks in Western Europe, where temperatures exceeded 100 F. Thousands of gallons of water will be pumped in to refill the pond. JTA reports that Jewish community members plan to add fish to the Stadspark pond with permission from the municipality.
The White House hopes to see a long-term ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, with or without Palestinian Authority (PA) support, a Trump administration official told Haaretz on Monday. The current US administration would view a PA return to Gaza favorably, but in the event that the PA is not involved, it will still support a viable ceasefire agreement, the official stated. “We would like to see an end to fighting with or without the PA,” but the administration would prefer “if the PA reasserts control in Gaza so we can get on with making lives better.” Read more at i24NEWS.
Elazar Azariya, the soldier convicted of killing a wounded terrorist in Chevron, reacted furiously to the decision of the Israel police not to allow him to carry a personal firearm. A few months ago, MK Nava Boker (Likud) asked that the state allow Azariya to carry weapons, because she said that his life was in danger. His petition was denied. “I enlisted in the army and chose combat service to defend the State of Israel and I did it with great pride,” he said. “As everyone knows, I and my family received and receive constant threats to our lives from terrorist organizations, and we also received a rifle bullet in the mailbox.” “We complained about this to the Israel Police and to the IDF during my stay in one of the detention facilities, and amazingly, not...
Israel’s law enforcement agencies have decided to order the deduction of over a million shekels from the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) tax revenues, Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation (IPBC) reported. Last year, an Israeli court for the first time recognized the torture of 50 collaborators and ordered the PA to pay them compensation. The full amount has yet to be determined. However, in the meantime, legal costs have been deducted from the transfers to the PA. Read more at Arutz Sheva.

Alexandria, VA - Paul Manafort’s defense rested its case Tuesday without calling any witnesses in the former Trump campaign chairman’s tax evasion and bank fraud trial. Manafort himself chose not to testify. The decision not to call witnesses clears the way for the jury to hear closing arguments in the first trial to emerge from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. The arguments are scheduled for Wednesday morning. Manafort is accused of hiding millions of dollars in income he received advising Ukrainian politicians. The defense has tried to blame Manafort’s financial mistakes on his former deputy, Rick Gates. Defense attorneys have called Gates a liar, philanderer and embezzler as they’ve sought to undermine his testimony. Manafort’s dec...
Beachwood, Ohio - Police are trying to determine a motive in an Ohio doctor’s slaying that was followed by his two sons killing themselves during a standoff with SWAT officers. Beachwood Police Chief Gary Haba said Tuesday police believe Dr. Richard Warn was killed last week by one or both of his sons. Haba says investigators and the SWAT team went to a home Friday in nearby South Euclid to gather evidence in the 59-year-old doctor’s slaying. Thirty-one-year-old Michael Warn and 29-year-old Mark Warn were found dead from self-inflicted gunshot wounds Saturday after a 12-hour standoff at a home their father purchased. Police say the standoff began with someone inside firing high-powered rifle rounds at a SWAT vehicle. Haba says the brothers had no criminal history and investi...
HOUSTON (AP) — A Jordanian immigrant was sentenced to death on Tuesday after being convicted in what Texas prosecutors described as the honor killings of his daughter's American husband and her friend who was an Iranian women's rights activist. Ali Mahwood-Awad Irsan was found guilty of capital murder last month in the 2012 fatal shootings of his son-in-law, Coty Beavers, and his daughter's friend, Gelareh Bagherzadeh. The Harris County jury deliberated for just 35 minutes — after five weeks of testimony — before reaching the verdict in Houston. The same jury deliberated about nine hours before sentencing him to death for the killings, which occurred about 11 months apart. When the jury's punishment verdict was announced, Irsan slumped slig...
A former Baltimore police officer was indicted on assault charges Tuesday after being recorded repeatedly punching a man in a street confrontation three days earlier in a video that went viral. Arthur Williams, who resigned a day after Saturday's confrontation, was charged with first- and second-degree assault, as well as misconduct in office, Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby said at a news conference. Mosby declined to offer many details about the indictment, citing the ongoing case. But she said prosecutors considered a "great deal" of evidence beyond the video. "I can tell you that we don't just consider what you all have viewed, the viral video," Mosby said. "We consider a great deal more evidence, which is what we were able to present before the grand jury." ...

Ismer says police have opened two investigations on suspicion of disturbing the peace by threatening a crime. Nesquehoning, PA - A group of girls from a Bais Yaakov summer camp had a real adventure yesterday on a Poconos rafting trip when the fast-moving waters of the Lehigh River stranded approximately 35 boaters. The girls were from Camp Sviva, located in Woodbourne, New York. Stephen Bretzik, general manager of Whitewater Rafting Adventures in Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania said that his outfit ran two river trips yesterday, including the group of over 200 girls.  All of the rafts were accompanied by guides in kayaks, said Bretzik. MILAN (AP) — A 51-year-old highway bridge in the Italian port city of Genoa collapsed in a driving rain Tuesday, killing at least 26 people and injuring 16 others as it sent dozens of vehicles tumbling into a heap of concrete and twisted steel. Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte called it "an immense tragedy ... inconceivable in a modern system like ours, a modern country." The disaster, on a major interchange connecting Genoa and other northern cities with beaches in eastern Liguria into France, focused attention on Italy's aging infrastructure, particularly its concrete bridges and viaducts built in the postwar boom of the 1950s and 1960s. What caused the Morandi Bridge to fall remained unknown, and prosecutors said they were opening an investigation but had not identified any ...

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A $42,000 antique desk. A $32,000 blue suede sectional sofa. A $7,500 inlaid wooden floor map of West Virginia's 55 counties. A scandal involving lavish office renovations and other financial abuses by the highest court in one of the poorest states in America has triggered an extraordinary move by one branch of government to essentially fire another. The West Virginia House of Delegates on Monday impeached four justices of the state Supreme Court on charges of extravagant spending and other misconduct, setting the stage for a Senate trial that could lead to their removal. One of those justices retired on Tuesday, averting the prospect of sitting through a proceeding that is sure to explore the justices' fancy tastes in embarrassing detail. And th...
