Arab media outlets claim Israeli fighter jets hit targets in Syria. Arab media outlets claimed Sunday evening that Israeli fighter jets hit targets in Syria’s Hama province. Lebanese media outlets claimed that Israeli aircraft were spotted over Lebanese airspace, while Syrian sources claimed that targets had been hit Sunday evening outside of the city of Masyaf, located in the Hama province in northwestern Syria. Unconfirmed reports claimed that the targets hit included weapons development centers run by the Assad regime. Other reports say that the target was a center for researching chemical weapons. The Israeli military has not responded to the claims. Syria's official media outlet, SANA, confirmed reports of the attack.
Warsaw, Poland — Israel’s ambassador to Poland has joined Warsaw residents in recalling the first mass deportations of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto and in honoring a Jewish activist who took his own life while despairing the world’s indifference to the Holocaust. The March of Remembrance got underway Sunday at Umschlagplatz Memorial, the site where Nazi Germans occupying Poland started in July 1942 putting Jews on trains to the Treblinka death camp. The marches have been held each year since 2012 in memory of Warsaw’s Jewish community, which was Europe’s largest before World War II. This year’s event was dedicated to Szmul Zygielbojm, who killed himself in London in 1943. After fleeing Poland, Zygielbojm publicly relayed what he was hearing about the J...
Jerusalem - The Israeli military evacuated hundreds of Syrian rescue workers known as White Helmets from the volatile frontier area on the Golan Heights and transported them to Jordan, following a request by the United States and its European allies, officials said Sunday. It was the first such Israeli intervention in Syria’s lengthy civil war, now in its eight year. Jordan confirmed the Syrian citizens entered its territory to be resettled in Western countries in weeks. Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said the total number of evacuees was 422, even though the initial request was to evacuate 800. It was unclear what happened to the remainder. Safadi later tweeted that Jordan approved the evacuations after a pledge from Britain, Germany and Canada that the Syrian evacuees would be re...
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's president Hassan Rouhani has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to "make peace" with Iran, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported on Sunday. The report quotes Rouhani as saying "American must understand well that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace and war with Iran is the mother of all wars." Rouhani warned Trump to stop "playing with the lion's tail" and threatening Iran, "or else you will regret it." Trump earlier this year pulled the United States out of the international deal meant to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon and ordered increased American sanctions. Trump has suggested Iranian leaders are "going to call me and say 'let's make a deal'" but Iran has rejected talks. Rouhani has previously la...
Washington - The red-and-white soccer ball tossed to President Donald Trump by Russia’s Vladimir Putin is undergoing a routine security screening. The U.S. Secret Service says that’s standard for all gifts to the president. During a joint news conference after their summit this week in Finland, Putin used soccer metaphors and was handed a soccer ball that he tossed to Trump. Russia hosted the 2018 World Cup. Trump said he’d give the ball to his 12-year-old son Barron, a soccer fan. Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Putin critic, tweeted after the exchange that he’d have the ball checked for listening devices and “never allow it in the White House.” Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told a security conference he’s sure the ball &ldquo...
Damascus - Syrian state television said on Sunday an Israeli air strike had hit a military post in the city of Misyaf in Syria’s Hama province but caused only material damage. The newsflash did not elaborate on what exactly had been targeted. An intelligence source said a major military research centre for chemical arms production was located near the city. Last week, Syrian state media said Israeli rockets had struck a Syrian military position near Nairab airport on the outskirts of the city of Aleppo. Opposition sources said several Iranians were killed at a logistics site used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards near the airport. Some of Iran’s military bases in Syria are next to Syrian military compounds, according to the intelligence source. Read more at Reuters
New York - Former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver on Friday begged for mercy at his sentencing next week on corruption charges, telling a judge that he is filled with shame and prays he will not die in prison. The 74-year-old Democrat submitted a letter in Manhattan federal court, saying he and his wife “are both crumbling” after he was convicted in May at a retrial on corruption charges. He said he hardly sleeps and thinks of nothing except his criminal case. “I pray I will not die in prison,” he told U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni. He called himself “broken-hearted” that he damaged the trust people have in government. Prosecutors, in their own submission Friday, sought a sentence of well over 10 years in prison, saying they had prov...
Bridgewater, NJ -  President Donald Trump claims it is “looking more & more” like his 2016 campaign “was illegally being spied upon” for the gain of his political rivals. Trump was reacting to the release of documents Saturday that formed the basis of a federal wiretapping warrant against former campaign adviser Carter Page. He tweeted Sunday that the Russia investigation is “an illegal Scam!” The documents were part of officials’ application for a warrant to the secretive foreign intelligence surveillance court, which signed off on surveilling Page. Visible portions of the heavily redacted documents show the FBI telling the court that Page “has been collaborating and conspiring with the Russian government.” The agency also ...
Cairo - Egypt’s government says it rejects a controversial legislation passed by Israel’s parliament defining Israel as a nation-state of the Jewish people. Saturday’s statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry says the law adopted Thursday by the Knesset “consolidates the notion of occupation and racial segregation and undermines the chances of achieving peace.” The ministry says the law could also affect the “right of return” for Palestinian refugees displaced since 1948. It urges the international community to uphold the Palestinians’ historical and legal rights and to push for resuming negotiations and advancing peace efforts in support of a two-state solution. Egypt was the first Arab country to make peace with Israel in 1979.
Houston, TX -  Houston police are studying surveillance video and following up on tips in the killing of a cardiologist who once treated former U.S. President George H.W. Bush and was fatally shot while riding a bicycle in the city’s medical center, authorities said on Saturday. Mark Hausknecht, 65, was killed on Friday morning by a man thought to be in his 30s who fired at least two shots at him from a passing bicycle as the doctor rode to work at the center, which is home to several hospitals and medical offices, police said. The suspect then rode off, according to police, who have yet to give a motive for the daylight shooting in a busy city area. “Mark was a fantastic cardiologist and a good man. I will always be grateful for his exceptional, compassionate care. H...
Borough Park, NY - A Brooklyn man is under arrest after a hit and run yesterday in the heart of Borough Park that sent three Orthodox Jewish individuals to the hospital. Police said that the incident took place at the intersection of 11th Avenue and 56th Street at 6:20 PM.  A 64 year old man, a 55 year old man and a six year old boy were crossing at the intersection when a 2007 Honda Odyssey reversed direction, striking all three before leaving the scene. The vehicle was later stopped by members of Shomrim in front of 1027 58th Street.  The driver, 27 year old Juan Paulino of Sunset Park, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident. The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force reviewed the incident and determined that it was not bias related. Paulino was previous...
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A gunman who got into a deadly shootout with police, then took dozens of people hostage at a Los Angeles supermarket has been arrested on suspicion of murder, authorities said Sunday. Gene Evin Atkins, 28, was being held Sunday morning on $2 million bail, according to Officer Drake Madison, a Los Angeles police spokesman. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney and a message left at a number listed for Atkins in public records wasn't immediately returned. A woman was shot and killed when Atkins ran into the Trader Joe's supermarket in Los Angeles' Silver Lake section on Saturday, but no hostages were seriously hurt before the man handcuffed himself and surrendered about three hours later, police said. Coroner's officials identified the wom...
Branson, MO - A private inspector said Saturday that he warned the company operating duck boats on a Missouri lake about design flaws putting the watercraft at greater risk of sinking, less than a year before the accident that killed 17 people during a sudden storm. Steve Paul, owner of the Test Drive Technologies inspection service in the St. Louis area, said he issued a written report for the company in August 2017. It explained why the boats’ engines — and pumps that remove water from their hulls — might fail in inclement weather. He also told The Associated Press that the tourist boats’ canopies make them hard to escape when they sink — a concern raised by regulators after a similar sinking in Arkansas killed 13 people in 1999. The accident Thursday eve...
Branson, MO - Grab the baby!” Those were the last words Tia Coleman recalls her sister-in-law yelling before the tourist boat they were on sank into a Missouri lake, killing 17 people, including nine of Coleman’s family members. A huge wave hit, scattering passengers on the vessel known as a duck boat into Table Rock Lake near Branson, Coleman said. When the Indianapolis woman came up for air, she was alone. She prayed. “I said, ‘Lord, please, let me get to my babies,” she told reporters from her wheelchair Saturday in the lobby of a hospital where she’s recovering after swallowing lake water. “‘... If they don’t make it, Lord, take me too. I don’t need to be here.’” Coleman recalled spotting the rescue boat and ma...

Lakewood, NJ - A three year old Jackson girl who was pulled from the bottom of her family’s backyard pool in late June passed away yesterday, prompting calls for greater safety measures to be taken to prevent future tragedies. Sources who spoke to VIN News on condition of anonymity said that Mindel Rivka Gross was at the pool with family members when she slipped into the water unnoticed.  She was pulled from the water approximately three minutes later, with a neighbor beginning CPR until Hatzolah arrived on scene.  The little girl was rushed to an area hospital where she clung to life for three and a half weeks before succumbing to her injuries.
