WASHINGTON (AP) — Unbowed by the broad condemnation of his extraordinary embrace of a longtime U.S. enemy, President Donald Trump declared Tuesday that his summit in Helsinki with Russian President Vladimir Putin went "even better" than his meeting with NATO allies last week in Brussels. The tweeted defense came a day after Trump openly questioned his own intelligence agencies' findings that Russia meddled in the 2016 U.S. election to his benefit, and he seemed to accept Putin's insistence that Moscow's hands were clean. Trump's reference to his NATO performance carried an edge, too, since the barrage of criticism and insults he delivered there was not generally well-received. He dismissed it all with a new attack on an old target: the news media. He said his NA...
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Islamic State suicide bomber killed 20 people in northern Afghanistan on Tuesday, including a Taliban commander, while in southern Helmand province, a government commando unit freed 54 people from a Taliban-run jail, officials said. In southern Kandahar province, the Taliban attacked a police checkpoint in Arghistan district late on Monday night, killing nine policemen and wounding seven, according to Daud Ahmadi, the spokesman for the provincial governor. Zia Durrani, the provincial police spokesman, said 25 Taliban fighters were killed and 15 were wounded in the ensuing battle in Arghistan, a violate districts close to the Pakistani border. Afghanistan has faced intense attacks by both the Taliban and the country's Islamic State affiliate recent...
Moscow - Russian prosecutors are pushing to question U.S. intelligence agents and a former ambassador to Moscow in their investigation of an influential foe of Vladimir Putin. The general prosecutor’s office made the announcement Tuesday in the wake of Putin’s summit Monday with U.S. President Donald Trump. Putin offered to allow U.S. investigators to question Russian military agents accused of hacking the Democratic Party during the 2016 U.S. election campaign. In exchange, Russia wants to question U.S. officials suspected of involvement in alleged financial crimes by British investor Bill Browder. Representative Alexander Kurennoi told reporters the prosecutor’s office is preparing requests to send to the U.S. for such interrogations. Browder was behind a law on U.S...
Menasha, WI - Police say a bicyclist who weaved past the gates blocking access to a bridge over a river in eastern Wisconsin escaped serious injury after falling into the gap that was created when the bridge started to rise. Wisconsin Department of Transportation surveillance video shot July Fourth shows the woman ignoring the barrier and red flashing lights at the bridge in Menasha, and apparently not noticing that it was already cranking into action. The woman and her bike then drop into the gap and she disappears. In the following minutes, onlookers rush to her aid and the bridge operator stalls the bridge until the woman and her bicycle are extracted. Police say the 37-year-old woman was taken to a hospital in Neenah where she was treated for facial injuries.
Madrid - Amazon is hoping customers don’t see any more dogs, after early problems on Prime Day meant people trying to shop got only images of cute canines delivering an apologetic message. The snags Monday on its much-hyped Prime Day were an embarrassment for the tech company on the shopping holiday it created, and people took to social media to complain that they couldn’t order items. Amazon said it was resolving the glitches and in a tweet Tuesday lauded Prime Day growth in the first ten hours compared to last year. The event is in four new countries this year and it’s running longer. The hiccups, though, could have sent shoppers elsewhere during a key period when Amazon signs up new Prime members. Many other chains offered sales and promotions to try to capitalize o...
Washington - President Donald Trump is unbowed by bipartisan criticism of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a Tuesday tweet the President calls the Monday summit in Helsinki “even better” than his meeting with NATO allies last week in Brussels. Trump is facing bipartisan criticism for his refusal to publicly challenge Putin over Russia’s election hacking and for doubting U.S. intelligence agency conclusions about Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign. Trump backers, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich have criticized his performance. Trump is taking aim at a familiar target — the media — saying his NATO meeting was “great” but that he “h...
WASHINGTON (AP) — The top U.S. intelligence official on Monday stood by what he called "clear" assessments of Russian meddling in the 2016 election after President Donald Trump cast doubt on that conclusion following a summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The statement from Dan Coats, the Director of National Intelligence, did not directly reference Trump's comments at a news conference alongside Putin in Helsinki. But it came just two-and-a-half hours after Trump said that while he had "great confidence" in U.S. intelligence, Putin's denial of election meddling was "extremely strong and powerful." Coats said that the role of the intelligence community is "to provide the best information and fact-based assessments possible for the president and policymakers." "We h...
A burning terror balloon launched from the Gaza Strip on Tuesday landed in a kindergarten in nearby Sdot Negev when children were playing in its yard. A kindergarten teacher kept the children away from the balloon and called fire fighters. No casualties were reported.
CHICAGO (AP) — CVS Health says two Chicago store employees are out of their jobs just days after a black customer complained that white managers called police after accusing her of trying to use a phony coupon. The company said Monday it had completed a review of the Friday night incident. The company says the two staffers involved are no longer employed. Camilla Hudson posted cellphone video of a manager appearing nervous as he calls police. The 53-year-old Hudson says another manager directly challenged her when she tried to use a manufacturer's coupon for a free product. She tells The Associated Press he was "hostile." The video shows the manager talking to police on the phone. No action was taken when officers arrived. CVS apologized to Hudson and says it doesn...
Jerusalem - Israel’s parliament passed a law on Tuesday that could see groups critical of government policies toward the Palestinians banned from entering Israeli schools and speaking with pupils. Critics of the law, which passed with 43 votes in favor and 24 against in the 120-seat Knesset, said it was a blow to core democratic values like free speech and part of the Israeli government’s effort to delegitimize rights groups and NGOs. The amendment to the education act grants new powers to Education Minister Naftali Bennett, head of the religious-nationalist Jewish Home party, to order schools to bar certain groups from giving lectures to students. The legislation has been dubbed the “Breaking the Silence” law, a reference to the Israeli group of that name which ...
Frankfurt - Flying robots that can travel dozens of kilometers without stopping could be the next big thing for power companies. Utilities in Europe are looking to long-distance drones to scour thousands of miles of grids for damage and leaks in an attempt to avoid network failures that cost them billions of dollars a year. However the technology faces major safety and regulatory hurdles that are clouding its future in the sector. Snam and EDF’s network subsidiary RTE have tested prototypes of long-distance drones that fly at low altitudes over pipelines and power lines. Italy’s Snam, Europe’s biggest gas utility, told Reuters it is trialing one of these machines - known as BVLOS drones because they fly ‘beyond the visual line of sight’ of operators - in ...
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democratic socialist who became a rising political star after her victory in New York’s congressional primary last month, referred to Israel’s "occupation” of Palestine in an interview before admitting that she is “not the expert” on the subject. During an interview on PBS’s "Firing Line" on Friday the congressional candidate raised eyebrows when she said, “I also think that what people are starting to see-- at least in the occupation of Palestine-- is just an increasing crisis of humanitarian condition and that to me is just where I tend to come from on this issue.” When asked to expand on her comment, Ocasio-Cortez hesitated for a moment before explaining how “Palestinians are experiencing difficu...
Lakewood, NJ - For the third time in recent months, the Lakewood Police Department t has found itself scrutinized by an official agency, this time as the subject of a Federal Bureau of Investigation inquiry. According to the Asbury Park Press, the department’s Traffic Safety Unit was hit with a subpoena in April, ordering the division to give the FBI all records related to serious or fatal crashes that took place within the township since January 2014.  34 people were killed in motor vehicle accidents in Lakewood during that time period, including over a dozen who died in 2017.The cause for the investigation is not spelled out in the subpoena. Lakewood police, township attorney Steven Secare and U.S. Attorney’s Office spokesman Will Skaggs all declined to comment on the...
Los Angeles - A self-described beachcomber says it was her luckiest find yet: A woman who survived a 250-foot car plunge off a cliff and a week stranded on a remote California beach. “We freakin’ love that beach and we’re so glad she’s alive,” Chelsea Moore said Monday as she described the afternoon last Friday when she and her husband found 23-year-old Angela Hernandez of Portland. Hernandez had been driving to her sister’s home in Lancaster, near Los Angeles, on July 6 when a small animal crossed in front of her, causing her to swerve and lose control of her car, she wrote from her hospital bed Sunday in a Facebook  account. “The only thing I really remember after that was waking up,” Hernandez wrote. “I was still in my c...
Damascus - The Syrian army and its allies have taken control of a strategic hill overlooking the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights as it pushes forward with an offensive to seize the remaining parts of the southwest from rebels, state TV and rebels said on Monday. It said the army had taken control of al-Haara hill on the second day of an offensive to take back the last parts of southwest Syria in Quneitra province that are in rebel hands and are close to the border with Israel. The hilltop, which had a major anti-aircraft radar base that was part of elaborate Syrian army defenses against Israel, and is the highest ground in Deraa province, fell into rebel hands in October 2014. It has been heavily bombed by Russian and Syrian army raids in the past two days as the army has moved closer to...
Fort Worth, TX - The two things that stand out most about Spirit Airlines are its low fares and high number of complaints. Spirit has improved on-time performance and cut its complaint rate by more than half in the last few years, although it still ranks near the bottom among U.S. airlines. The airline is about to get a new CEO. Ted Christie, currently the president, will take over in January, replacing Robert Fornaro. Christie sat down with The Associated Press recently at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and talked about how Spirit will handle rising fuel costs, the airline’s plan for growth, and how it will improve its reputation. The answers have been edited for length. Q: For people who have never flown on Spirit, who are your customers? A: The vast majority of peopl...
New York - Seconds after President Donald Trump’s news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin ended Monday, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper called the American leader’s performance “disgraceful.” It was the most startling of several strong media reactions to the session, televised live by the largest American broadcasters and cable news networks, primarily because of Cooper’s role. He was the news anchor directing CNN’s coverage, as opposed to a pundit paid to be opinionated. “You have been watching perhaps one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president at a summit in front of a Russian leader, certainly that I’ve ever seen,” he said. Cooper later said it was embarrassing and compared the way Trump repeatedly ...
New York - The New York Police Department announced on Monday that it will allow disciplinary proceedings to go forward against a patrolman accused in the notorious chokehold death of an unarmed black man, saying it’s run out of patience with federal authorities’ indecision about whether to bring a criminal case. On the eve of the four-year anniversary of Eric Garner’s killing, a pointed letter from the NYPD’s top lawyer informed the U.S. Department of Justice of an administrative case that could result in dismissal for the white officer, Daniel Pantaleo, because “there is no end in sight” to the federal probe. Typically, the department waits for federal prosecutors to conclude civil rights violations inquiries before taking action. But other probes ha...
Washington - Exactly seven months before the 2016 presidential election, Russian government hackers made it onto a Democratic committee’s network. One of their carefully crafted fraudulent emails had hit pay dirt, enticing an employee to click a link and enter her password. That breach of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee was the first significant step in gaining access to the Democratic National Committee network. To steal politically-sensitive information, prosecutors say, the hackers exploited some of the United States’ own computer infrastructure against it, using servers they leased in Arizona and Illinois. The details were included in an indictment released Friday by special counsel Robert Mueller, who accused the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence...
