New York - Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez today announced that two Brooklyn men have been indicted for assault as a hate crime and other charges in connection with an alleged attack against a Jewish rabbinical student who was walking home at night in Crown Heights. The defendants did not take any property or cash, including a charity box the victim was holding, and allegedly stated that they were irritated because he was speaking in Hebrew on the phone – leading to the hate crime charges. District Attorney Gonzalez said, “We allege that these defendants decided to assault a man for the sole reason that he looked different than them and spoke a different language. I will never tolerate bias-motivated crimes in Brooklyn, and will investigate and prosecute them vigorou...
WASHINGTON (AP) — Trump signs executive order to keep families together at border, says 'zero-tolerance' prosecution policy will continue.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said he would be signing an executive order later Wednesday that would end the process of separating children from families after they are detained crossing the border illegally. "We want to keep families together. It's very important," Trump told reporters during a White House meeting with members of Congress. "I'll be signing something in a little while that's going to do that." The effort would mark a dramatic departure for an administration that has been insisting, wrongly, that it has no choice but to separate families apprehended at the border because of the law and a court decision. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, the president and other officials have repeatedly said the only way to end the practice is f...
NEW YORK (AP) — The mouse is chasing the fox. Disney is offering more than $71 billion for Fox's entertainment businesses in a counterbid to Comcast's nearly $66 billion offer . The battle for Twenty-First Century Fox reflects a new imperative among entertainment and telecommunications firms. They are amassing ever more programming to better compete with technology companies such as Amazon and Netflix for viewers' attention — and dollars. The bidding war comes after AT&T bought Time Warner for $81 billion. Disney's move had been expected since Comcast made its bid last week. Disney said it's raising its offer because Fox's value increased due to "tax reform and operating improvements." "After six months of integration pl...
THE FOLLOWING IS VIA YWN Initial reports spoke of 30 rockets fired from Gaza towards Israel, but when the night ended and the damaged tallied, it was realized that number rose to 45 rockets fired. Seven of the rockets were intercepted by the Iran Dome system. Three rockets landed in Gaza, falling short of their intended targets. Shortly after midnight the Israel Air Force announced it targeted three Hamas facilities in Gaza in retaliation for the rocket fire. Shorty thereafter the Red Alert sirens were heard throughout Gaza border communities. Shortly thereafter, the IAF struck another 8 Hamas facilities.
Salem, Ohio - U.S. immigration agents have arrested more than 100 workers at an Ohio meat packing plant, the second large-scale raid in the state within the past two weeks. Immigration officials say the arrests on Tuesday came after a year-long investigation into whether the company knowingly hired people who are in the country illegally. The arrests happened at Fresh Mark’s meat processing plant in Salem in northeastern Ohio. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says it also carried out search warrants at the company’s three other locations in Canton and Massillon. A message seeking comment was left with the company Wednesday. Two weeks ago, immigration agents arrested 114 people at a landscaping center in Ohio. The raids are part of the Trump administration’s g...
Jerusalem - Amid yet another report hinting at the possibility of the establishment of ties between Israel and Bahrain, Regional Cooperation Minister Tzachi Hanegbi told The Jerusalem Post Wednesday he was “not aware” or any concrete moves in that direction. Hanegbi’s comment came in response to an i24NEWS report quoting an unnamed Bahraini official as saying that Bahrain will be the first Gulf state to establish ties with Israel. “Bahrain does not view Israel as an enemy,” the official was quoted as saying, adding that a rapprochement between the two countries “will not contradict the principles of Bahrain.” “I am not aware of it,” Hanegbi said in response. “I would be very happy if it happens, but it is unlikely to happen ver...
Washington - Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has drafted an executive action for President Donald Trump that would direct her department to keep families together after they are detained crossing the border illegally. She was at the White House where Trump told reporters he would be “signing something” shortly. The effort to end what has become a major crisis for the Trump administration was outlined by two people familiar with Nielsen’s thinking who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the effort before its official announcement. It’s unclear exactly what the president might be supporting, but he said he would be signing something “in a little while.” “We want to keep families together,” he said. The effort would mark ...
WASHINGTON (AP) — Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is drafting an executive action for President Donald Trump that would direct her department to keep families together in detention after they are detained crossing the border illegally, according to two people familiar with her thinking. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the effort before its official announcement. It's unclear whether the president is supportive of the measure. But Nielsen was on her way to the White House to discuss it with the president's team, according to one of the people. The person said the secretary believes there is little certainty that Congress will act to fix the separation issue that has been dominating news coverage and she is trying to find a solution. The order w...
Though the race for Baltimore City state's attorney is low on the ballot, it has become one of the most heated contests. It's not a top-of-the-ticket contest, but the three Democratic candidates are certainly spending that way. As of Tuesday afternoon, incumbent Marilyn Mosby has spent $35,000 to run TV ads through Primary Election Day on June 26. Her challengers are Ivan Bates, who has spent $89,000, and Thiru Vignarajah, who is not on TV yet. Vignarajah focused on vetting Tuesday. "We have two opponents that have received insufficient vetting, which has to be corrected today," he said. Vignarajah accused his primary rivals of exaggerating their records and allowing campaign contributions to influence on-the-job decisions. "If you are casting a ballot f...
Washington - The Trump administration’s new health insurance option offers lower premiums for small businesses and self-employed people, but the policies are likely to cover fewer benefits. Another caveat: if healthy people flock to the new plans as expected, premiums will rise for those who need comprehensive coverage. President Donald Trump and Labor Secretary Alex Acosta rolled out their final blueprint for “association health plans” on Tuesday, with Trump promising a small-business group that “you’re going to save massive amounts of money and have much better health care.” Democrats decried it as “junk insurance,” and some patient groups warned it could undermine coverage for people in poor health. Republicans and some small-business g...
Baltimore, MD, June 20, 2018 — The Coalition for Jewish Values, representing over 1000 rabbis in matters of public policy, today celebrated the decision of the United States to withdraw from the UN Human Rights Council, and thanked President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley for their leadership in doing so. "Ambassador Haley aptly termed the UNHRC a 'cesspool of political bias," said Rabbi Dov Fischer, West Coast Regional Vice President of the CJV, "and it counts some of the world's most oppressive dictatorships as members. Its egregious and endemic bias against Israel is merely a symptom of that body's underlying disease. No civilized nation belongs among tyrants presuming to dictate on the subject of human rights." The CJV ...
London -  British Transport Police have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with a small explosion at a London Underground station that injured five people. The police say in a statement Wednesday that the man “was arrested on suspicion of doing an act likely to cause an explosion to injure or damage property endangering safety on the railway.” They said the explosion on Tuesday night at the Southgate station in north London was believed to be caused by a faulty drill battery and did not seem to be related to terrorism. The man was released pending further inquiry.
United Nations - The United Nations’ Human Rights Council returned to business as usual Wednesday despite the U.S. pulling out a day earlier. Russia blasted the American move, calling it “boorish” and saying the U.S. “inflicted a powerful blow to its human rights reputation.” The U.N.‘s top rights body, based in Geneva, took up a discussion on summary executions and freedom of expression with the U.S. seats unoccupied Wednesday. The U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Nikki Haley, announced the pullout Tuesday, criticizing the council for “its chronic bias against Israel” and pointing out that it includes accused human rights abusers such as China, Cuba, Venezuela and Congo. In Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticized what s...
Panmunjom, North Korea - Lt. Col. Hwang Myong Jin has been a guide on the northern side of the Demilitarized Zone that divides the two Koreas for five years. He says that since the summits between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the presidents of South Korea and the United States, things have quieted down noticeably in perhaps the last place on Earth where the Cold War still burns hot. “A lot of things have changed. Listen to how quiet it is,” he said as he stood on the balcony of a large building overlooking the blue and white barracks and concrete demarcation line that mark the boundary between North and South. “The South used to blast psychological warfare propaganda at us,” he said. “But since the summits, they have stopped. Now there is a peaceful a...
BERLIN (AP) — A call from the public was key to foiling an Islamic extremist's plan to use the toxin ricin to carry out a deadly attack in Germany, security officials said Wednesday. The head of the country's domestic intelligence agency said a phone-in tip helped authorities confirm existing suspicions against a 29-year-old Tunisian man in the western city of Cologne. The suspect, named only as Sief Allah H. in line with German privacy laws, was arrested last week and remains in custody. Hans-Georg Maassen, head of the BfV intelligence agency, said the alleged plot showed that the danger of an attack in Germany remains high. According to federal prosecutors, the suspect bought at least 1,000 castor bean seeds online and used instructions posted on the web by the Islamic...
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli warplanes struck Hamas positions in Gaza after Palestinian militants there fired dozens of rockets and mortars at southern communities early Wednesday, the military said. The Palestinian fire came hours after the Israeli military said it struck Hamas infrastructure in response to "arson balloons" launched from Gaza into Israel. Israel has been battling large fires caused by kites and balloons rigged with incendiary devices or burning rags, launched by Palestinians in Gaza that have destroyed forests, burned crops and killed wildlife and livestock. Fawzi Barhoum, a spokesman for Hamas, praised the rocket attacks calling them "a legitimate right that bombing is met with bombing," but did not take responsibility for them. The Israeli military said Palestinia...
GENEVA (AP) — The U.N.'s Human Rights Council resumed work Wednesday after a U.S. pullout that one Western diplomat called a "Big Bang" for the Geneva body, as Russia blasted the move by the Trump administration and key allies expressed disappointment. Critics and friends alike read the latest Trump move to snub yet another international institution as a sign that U.S. was jettisoning its reputation as a key defender of human rights and self-inflicting a blow to its international image. They expressed support for the council, flaws and all, and vowed its work will go on. "We have lost a member who has been at the forefront of liberty for generations," Julian Braithwaite, Britain's ambassador in Geneva, told the council. "While we agree with the U.S. on the need for refor...
Jerusalem - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on governments worldwide on Wednesday to join forces to defend against cyber threats that he said could even bring down military and civilian aircraft. Cyber security also represents an enormous business opportunity, Netanyahu told a cyber conference at Tel Aviv University, adding that Israel receives about 20 percent of global investment in the sector. “We cannot go back to the world of levers, pulleys and couriers. Since we are going forward, we are absolutely vulnerable. Our airlines can be brought down, our fighter planes can be brought down,” he said. While Israel monitors attacks at its cyber security center in the southern city of Beersheba, Netanyahu said there was “no silver bullet”. “Th...
