JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Cabinet ministers have proposed legislation that seeks to outlaw photographing Israeli soldiers "for the sake of shaming them," a ban rights groups say would amount to government censorship. Facing criticism and questions about the proposal's legality, the government already appeared to be taking steps to water down the bill before it goes to a parliamentary vote. But rights groups said that even preliminary support for the legislation was a stain on the country's democracy. A ministerial committee, headed by Israel's justice minister, approved the proposal on Sunday. It says anyone "who films, photographs or records soldiers while performing their duty, with the intent of undermining the morale of Israeli soldiers and residents" or anyone wh...
Tokyo - Residents in western Japan were cleaning up debris Monday after a powerful earthquake hit the area around Osaka, the country’s second-largest city of commerce, killing three people and injuring hundreds while knocking over walls and setting off fires. The magnitude 6.1 earthquake that struck the area early Monday damaged buildings and left many homes without water or gas. The quake also grounded flights in and out of Osaka, and paralyzed traffic and commuter trains most of the day. By the evening, bullet trains and some local trains had resumed operation, with stations swollen with commuters trying to get home, many of them waiting in long lines. An exodus of commuters who chose to walk home filled sidewalks and bridges. Some commuters took refuge at nearby shelters instea...
Jerusalem - A Palestinian man died in unclear circumstances near the Israel-Gaza border on Monday, hours after Israel and Hamas traded salvos over Palestinian incendiary kites. The Israeli military said in a statement that five Palestinian militants were wounded while attempting “to sabotage a security infrastructure” along the border in the northern Gaza Strip. The Palestinian Health Ministry said 24-year-old Sabri Abu Khader died an hour after arriving at the hospital, without specifying the cause of his death. Earlier in the day the Israeli military said it struck nine Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip in a bid to deter Palestinians from launching incendiary kites and balloons into Israel. The army said that the airstrikes were a response “to arson and explosive kites...
McAllen, TX - Inside an old warehouse in South Texas, hundreds of children wait in a series of cages created by metal fencing. One cage had 20 children inside. Scattered about are bottles of water, bags of chips and large foil sheets intended to serve as blankets. One teenager told an advocate who visited that she was helping care for a young child she didn’t know because the child’s aunt was somewhere else in the facility. She said she had to show others in her cell how to change the girl’s diaper. The U.S. Border Patrol on Sunday allowed reporters to briefly visit the facility where it holds families arrested at the southern U.S. border, responding to new criticism and protests over the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy and resulting sep...

Google said that through the partnership, the company will explore new solutions to improve shopping experiences of consumers around the world. It was not clear if the partnership was the American company’s latest attempt to make a foray into China, where its major services, including email and its search engine, are blocked. The two companies, however, wil...
Ramallah - A Palestinian official has condemned reported U.S. plans to secure Gulf funding for major economic projects in blockaded, impoverished Gaza. Nabil Abu Rdeneh, an aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, alleged Monday that such efforts aim to further separate the Gaza and the West Bank which flank Israel. Abbas runs parts of the West Bank and the Islamic militant Hamas controls Gaza. Israel, citing security, has prevented most travel between the two territories sought for a Palestinian state. President Donald Trump’s adviser, son-in-law Jared Kushner, is expected to visit Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia this week to discuss the situation in Gaza and the administration’s proposals for an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal. Abbas halted contacts with ...

JERUSALEM (AP) — A former Israeli government minister, once imprisoned for trying to smuggle drugs, is back behind bars after being charged with spying for archenemy Iran, the country's internal security agency said Monday. The Shin Bet said Gonen Segev was extradited from Guinea and arrested upon arrival in Israel last month on suspicion of "committing offenses of assisting the enemy in war and spying against the state of Israel." It said Segev, a former energy minister, acted as an agent for Iranian intelligence and relayed information "connected to the energy market and security sites in Israel including buildings and officials in political and security organizations." Yekaterinburg, Russia - More than 5,000 people with tickets skipped Uruguay’s 1-0 win over Egypt in Yekaterinburg on Friday, the worst-attended World Cup game in eight years. FIFA said it is investigating why, with “no-shows” one of the factors. Pockets of orange seats were clearly visible in the lower tiers of the Yekaterinburg Arena, which has a 33,061 capacity for World Cup games. The temporary stands behind the goals for Russian fans appeared to be fuller. FIFA said it allocated 32,278 tickets and the official attendance was 27,015 for the 5 p.m. kickoff. Egypt forward Mohamed Salah didn’t play in the game because of a shoulder injury. “There were some bald spots and it wasn’t very pleasant,” regional sports minister Leonid Rapoport told Ru...
New Haven, CT - A new Connecticut elementary school will be named after former President Barack Obama. New Haven Public Schools administrators, civic leaders and officials gathered Thursday at the Southern Connecticut State University campus to break ground on Barack H. Obama Magnet University School. The 64,000-square-foot school will serve nearly 500 students from pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. It will replace the Strong 21st Century Communications School. New Haven Superintendent Carol Birks said the district was continuing the former president’s “commitment to urban education.” Officials say SCSU students will get a chance to gain in-class experience at the new school. The $45 million school is scheduled to open in fall 2019. It is thought to be the firs...
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A U.S. drone strike in northeastern Kunar province killed Pakistan Taliban chief Mullah Fazlullah, the insurgent leader who ordered the assassination of Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, an Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman said Friday.  In a telephone interview, Mohammad Radmanish said Fazlullah and two other insurgents were killed early Thursday morning, just hours before Afghanistan's Taliban began a three-day cease fire to mark the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr. The three-day holiday follows the end of Islam's holy month of Ramadan when devout adherents fast from sunrise to sunset. However, Sakhi Mashwani, a Parliamentarian from Kunar province told the Associated Press that Fazlullah, along with five other insurgents, died ...
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump gives few news conferences, and when one came Friday it was sudden, unexpected and chaotic. After making a surprise visit to the White House lawn for a half-hour interview with "Fox & Friends" host Steve Doocy, Trump took 20 minutes of questions from a boisterous group of White House reporters. It was televised live on cable news. Trump's remarks — about North Korea, his zero tolerance immigration policy, the investigation into his campaign's ties with Russia — offered enough fodder for television talkers to chew over all day and into the weekend. No one had any idea it was going to happen an hour before the president emerged. Doocy, typically New York-based, was in Washington this week to cover the congressional b...

MOSCOW (AP) — The Kremlin says President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have discussed the situation along Syria's border with Israel. The Kremlin said the leaders discussed "the situation in Syria in the context of joint efforts to ensure security around the Syrian-Israeli border" on a Friday call. It added they "voiced readiness to strengthen coordination on Syria, including on combating international terrorism." The conversation follows up on the two leaders' talks in Moscow and the Israeli defense minister's visit to Russia last month. The Syrian government's plans to recapture rebel-held areas near the border raised Israeli concerns its other backers besides Russia — Iran and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah — cou...
WASHINGTON (AP) — White House director of legislative affairs Marc Short has told staff that he'll be leaving the position this summer. Two White House officials said Short disclosed his plans Friday. He did not offer an exact date, but said he would leave sometime this summer. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly and demanded anonymity. Short has led Trump's legislative agenda, which has been a mixed success during his first 18 months in office. The biggest achievement with Congress was the passage of the tax cut bill in late 2017. But the administration has unsuccessfully pushed to overhaul President Barack Obama's health care law and has struggled to develop compromise legislation on immigration. Trump has frequently undercut the work of his legisl...
