HOUSTON (AP) — Here is a look at several things to know about the life of former first lady Barbara Bush: LITERACY EFFORTS The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy began during her White House years with a goal to improve the lives of disadvantaged Americans by boosting literacy among parents and their children. The foundation partners with local programs and had awarded more than $40 million to create or expand more than 1,500 literacy programs nationwide as of 2014. "Focusing on the family is the best place to start to make this country more literate, and I still feel that being more literate will help us solve so many of the other problems facing our society," she wrote in her 1994 memoir. HISTORY Barbara Bush was the second woman in U.S. history to be both a wife and m...
HOUSTON (AP) — Former first lady Barbara Bush has died. She was 92. A family spokesman says she died Tuesday. The snowy-haired Mrs. Bush was one of only two first ladies who was also the mother of a president. The other was Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams and mother of John Quincy Adams. Mrs. Bush's plainspoken manner and utter lack of pretense made her more popular at times than her husband. She brought a grandmotherly style to buttoned-down Washington, often appearing in her trademark fake pearl chokers and displaying no vanity about her white hair and wrinkles. She married George H.W. Bush in 1945. They had six children and were married longer than any presidential couple in American history.
Technology companies led U.S. stocks solidly higher Tuesday, giving the market its second straight gain. Consumer-services companies, retailers and health care stocks accounted for a big slice of the broad rally. Banks declined, and oil prices recovered from an early slide. Strong company earnings and outlooks, as well as some encouraging economic data, helped put investors in a buying mood. "Even though we're early in the earnings season, the fact that we continue to see good earnings and earnings growth come out is really what's driving the market," said Nana Adae, global investment specialist at J.P. Morgan Private Bank. "Earnings growth ties to fundamentals and fundamentals are key." The S&P 500 index rose 28.55 points, or 1.1 percent, to 2,706.39. The Dow Jones indus...
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A former Minnesota FBI counterterrorism agent who was caught in a Trump administration crackdown pleaded guilty Tuesday to leaking classified documents to a national media organization, saying he knew it was illegal but felt FBI investigations treated minority communities with "suspicion" and "disrespect." Terry J. Albury, 39, appeared in federal court in St. Paul on one count of unauthorized disclosure of national defense information and one count of unauthorized retention of national defense information. Under his plea agreement, Albury faces a likely sentence of between 37 and 57 months but the decision will be up to U.S. District Judge Wilhelmina Wright, who did not set a sentencing date. The Trump administration and Attorney General Jeff Sessions have ma...

Sirens wailed at 8 p.m. across the country, prompting Israelis to stop in their tracks and stand silently with heads bowed to remember the dead. Another siren will ring out on Wednesday morning. Memorial Day, which goes from sundown to sundown, is marked across the country by mournful ceremonies and visits to cemeteries by bereaved families. Places of entertainment shut down and TV and radio stations broadcast war stories and melancholic music. The main ceremony was held at Jerusalem's Western Wall on Tuesday evening and attended by Israel's president, military brass a...
NEW YORK (AP) — Fox News Channel says its management was unaware until it came out in court that host Sean Hannity shared a lawyer with President Donald Trump, but that Hannity "continues to have our full support." Fox said in a statement Tuesday that it had reviewed the matter and spoken to Hannity about the announcement that Michael Cohen had represented him. That was revealed in a court hearing on Monday about the FBI's seizure of records last week from Cohen's office as part of the probe of Trump's Russian contacts. Hannity had described his personal dealings with Cohen as centered on real estate advice, and that he considered it so minimal that he hadn't seen it necessary to bring it up to anyone.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court said Tuesday that part of a federal law that makes it easier to deport immigrants who have been convicted of crimes is too vague to be enforced. The court's 5-4 decision — an unusual alignment in which new Justice Neil Gorsuch joined the four liberal justices — concerns a catchall provision of immigration law that defines what makes a crime violent. Conviction for a crime of violence makes deportation "a virtual certainty" for an immigrant, no matter how long he has lived in the United States, Justice Elena Kagan wrote in her opinion for the court. The decision is a loss for President Donald Trump's administration, which has emphasized stricter enforcement of immigration law. In this case, President Barack Obama's admin...

The announcement Tuesday comes after the arrests sparked protests and calls for a boycott on social media. Starbucks says the stores and corporate offices will be closed on the afternoon of May 29. Starbucks, which once urged its employees to start conversations about race with customers, found itself through the looking glass: under fire for its treatment of black people. The company reacted from a high level: Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said the arrests should not have happened and the company said he me...

The Internal Revenue Service’s electronic system that allows Americans to submit their tax returns online has partly failed Tuesday, complicating filing for the millions of Americans attempting to meet the midnight deadline. “On my way over here this morning, I was told a number of systems are down at the moment,” IRS Acting Commissioner David J. Kautter told lawmakers at an IRS oversight hearing Tuesday. “We are working to resolve the issue and taxpayers should continue to file as they normally would.” The IRS plans to attempt a “hard reboot” of its system in the hope of solving the problem, according to a congressional official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private conversations. “If we can’t solve it today we...
Iranian-backed militants are operating across the United States mostly unfettered, raising concerns in Congress and among regional experts that these "sleeper cell" agents are poised to launch a large-scale attack on the American homeland, according to testimony before lawmakers. Iranian agents tied to the terror group Hezbollah have already been discovered in the United States plotting attacks, giving rise to fears that Tehran could order a strike inside America should tensions between the Trump administration and Islamic Republic reach a boiling point. Intelligence officials and former White House officials confirmed to Congress on Tuesday that such an attack is not only plausible, but relatively easy for Iran to carry out at a time when the Trump administration is considering abandoni...
