Special counsel Robert Mueller filed a new indictment charging former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and aide Rick Gates with multiple counts of tax and bank fraud. The new charges, returned by a federal grand jury in Alexandria, Virginia on Thursday, come after Mueller separately charged the two men in Washington last year with money laundering and failing to register as foreign agents for their work related to Ukraine.
Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett, the leader of the HaBayit HaYehudi, hinted on Thursday that he might take his party out of the governing coalition if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is indicted. Bennett’s remarks came after a major development in the previously low-profile Case 4000 corruption investigation of Netanyahu. The case involves alleged collusion between Netanyahu and Shaul Elovitch, owner of the news site Walla, to give Netanyahu more favorable coverage in return for easing regulations on parent company Bezeq. Earlier this week, Shlomo Filber, director-general of the Communications Ministry, turned state’s witness against Netanyahu in the case. On Wednesday, it was revealed that taped conversations revealed Elovitch explicitly telling Walla’s CE...
A photo taken during Tuesday’s White House listening session on gun violence shows some of President Trump’s notes for the event. Trump met with several survivors of last week’s shooting at a Florida high school, along with the family members of shooting victims. “What would you most want me to know about your experience?” was the top handwritten line on the card, as seen in a photo taken by The Associated Press. The last visible line on the card was, “I hear you.” Other lines are obscured by Trump’s hands. Read more at The Hill.
LONDON, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Iran will withdraw from the landmark 2015 nuclear deal if there is no economic benefit from it and major banks continue to fail to do business with the Islamic Republic, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Thursday. The July 2015 agreement between Iran and six major powers - Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States - obliged Iran to restrict its nuclear program in return for relief from sanctions that have crippled its economy. But U.S. President Donald Trump delivered an ultimatum to European powers on Jan. 12, saying they must agree to “fix the terrible flaws of the Iran nuclear deal” or he would refuse to extend the U.S. sanctions relief on Iran that it calls for. U.S. sanctions will resume unless Trump iss...
Stocks posted gains Thursday after investors put aside concerns that the Federal Reserve will accelerate its timeline for lifting interest rates. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 164.70 points, or 0.66%, to 24,962.48. The S&P 500 lost 2.63 points, or 0.1%, to 2,703.96. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite shed its early gains, falling 8.14 points, or 0.11%, to 7,210.09. Minutes from the Fed’s January policy meeting revealed Wednesday that officials were less hawkish than previously thought. After wage growth picked up last month, investors grew worried that the central bank would hike interest rates more than three times in 2018. In the January minutes, Fed officials said there were few signs that inflation would rise faster than anticipated. Investors also parsed a new read...

A few miles down the road from Israel's gated embassy, the Palestinian envoy to Washington sits in his office wrestling with a unique diplomatic dilemma: how to advance his people's cause when relations with the United States are so distant that he hasn't even spoken to the White House in months. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has written off President Donald Trump, cursing him and declaring him an illegitimate broker for peace. Trump has reacted angrily, threatening to cut off all U.S. aid and dismissing Palestinian claims that he blew up any semblance of impartiality by declaring Jerusalem to be Israel's capital. The Americans and the Palestinians can't even agree on the basic facts of the dispute, much less the path forward for talks and an even...
It was a tally so impressive that President Donald Trump touted it at his State of the Union address: Since May, agents cracking down on the violent gangs terrorizing the working-class suburbs of Long Island had swept up 428 gang suspects, including 220 members of the notorious MS-13. But the sweep, Operation Matador, also has been shrouded in secrecy. Federal and state authorities have declined repeated requests from The Associated Press for even basic information made public in most law enforcement operations, such as the names of those arrested and the crimes they are accused of committing. They won’t divulge their ages, immigration statuses or current whereabouts. And while they say 44 of those arrested have been deported, they refuse to say what happened to the rest, inc...

As part of its ongoing advocacy and in advance of its annual Albany Mission coming up on March 6th, Agudath Israel recently organized two mini-missions of yeshiva administrators and lay leaders to engage Albany lawmakers on the key issues facing the yeshiva community. These two groups represent thousands of Bukharian Jews, who live primarily in the borough of Queens, and have formed a close working relationship with Agudath Israel. The second mission consisted of representatives of major Boro Park institutions, who have long been staunch supporters as well as major beneficiaries of Agudath Israel’s advocacy efforts. Two United States Congressmen, Rep. Scott Tipton and Rep. David B Mckinley were detained this morning after touring the Temple Mount with Jewish guides. The two Congressmen and their wives took a photo while walking. That apparently was not deemed a crime… though they were told repeatedly by the Waqf guards to move along and not stop. Only the two US Congressmen were detained by Israeli police who received a tip from Muslim guards. Detained has two meanings: 1. to keep (someone) from proceeding; hold back. 2. to keep (someone) in official custody, typically for questioning about a crime or in politically sensitive situation. Jewish human rights organization Simon Wiesenthal Center said on Wednesday it was considering issuing a travel advisory for Jews urging them to limit their visits to Poland after the country’s relations with Israel were strained. This month Poland sparked international criticism, including from Israel and the United States, when it approved a law that imposes jail terms for suggesting the country was complicit in the Holocaust. Some three million Jews who lived in pre-war Poland were murdered by the Nazis during their occupation of the country. They accounted for about half of all Jews killed in the Holocaust. Poland’s nationalist ruling party says the new law is needed to ensure that Poles are also recognized as victims, not perpetrators, of Nazi aggression. It notes that t...
A prominent Jewish-American foundation removed a video from YouTube which had sparked outrage in Poland and beyond on Wednesday with its provocative use of the historically inaccurate term "Polish Holocaust" to protest a controversial new Polish law criminalizing some comments about the Holocaust. The private Ruderman Family Foundation also launched a campaign calling for the United States to sever its ties with Poland, an ally in NATO where the U.S. has recently deployed troops. The Boston-based foundation put out the video on Wednesday in reaction to the new Polish law, which criminalizes falsely attributing the Holocaust crimes of Nazi Germany to Poland. The measure has angered Israel, where it is seen as an attempt to whitewash the actions of Poles who killed Jews duri...
(February 22, 2018 / JNS) A historic archaeological discovery near Jerusalem’s Temple Mount may be proof of the life of the biblical prophet Isaiah, according to an article in the Biblical Archaeology Review.  A broken, eighth-century BCE clay seal impression, or bulla, appears to be inscribed with the words “Belonging to Isaiah,” as well as a partial word containing letters of the word “prophet.” “We appear to have discovered a seal impression, which may have belonged to the prophet Isaiah, in a scientific, archaeological excavation,” said Eilat Mazar, Ph.D., a Hebrew University archeologist, whose team uncovered the find at the Temple Mount’s southern wall Ophel excavation. In addition to the words on the bulla, a...
Governor Larry Hogan said that hundreds of Baltimore City's most violent offenders have been arrested thanks to a recent law enforcement initiative. Operation Seven Sentries was conducted over the past month and focused on finding violent repeat offenders who have evaded prison. "Make no mistake about it -- we will find you, we will arrest you and we will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law," Hogan said. Hogan said successful results from the Joint Law Enforcement Violent Crime Initiative are just the beginning. The Seven Sentries Operation included nearly 500 federal, state and local law enforcement officers and focused on reducing crime by getting criminals with open warrants off the streets of Baltimore City. The operation, conducted from Jan. 16 to Feb. 15., zeroed...
