The officers arrested fifteen rioters at the scene, confiscating seven vehicles which served the rioters, and three motorbikes suspected of being stolen. Upon searching the vehicles, Border Police found weapons and several knives. All of the rioters arrested are residents of Jenin and were directly involved in the riots. Israel Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon slammed the resolution submitted to the UN Security Council calling on it to rescind US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. "In these days, when the Jewish nation is celebrating when Jerusalem was liberated thousands of years ago, the Palestinians continue to try and reinvent history," Danon said. "No vote or discussion will change the clear facts: Jerusalem is and has always been the capital of Israel. This time, too, we will continue to defend our historical truth, together with our allies." According to Reuters, the Egyptian-drafted text circu...

The White House is embarking on a major campaign to turn public opinion against the nation’s largely family-based immigration system ahead of an all-out push next year to move toward a more merit-based structure. The administration was laying the groundwork for such a drive even before an Islamic State-inspired extremist who was born in Bangladesh tried to blow himself up in Midtown Manhattan on Monday. It is assembling data to bolster the argument that the current legal immigration system is not only ill-conceived, but dangerous and damaging to U.S. workers. “We believe that data drives policy, and this data will help drive votes for comprehensive immigration reform in Congress,” said White House spokesman Hogan Gidley. White House officials outlined their strategy ...
Administration official says Washington cannot envision situation under which the Kotel would not be a part of Israel. The U.S. expects the Western Wall in Jerusalem to be part of Israel, but specific boundaries are subject to final status negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA), a senior administration official said Friday. “We cannot envision any situation under which the Western Wall would not be a part of Israel. But as the President said, the specific boundaries of sovereignty of Israel are going to be part of the final status agreement,” the official told Israeli public broadcaster Kann. The official also noted that U.S. Vice President Mike Pence’s visit to the Western Wall as part of his upcoming trip to Israel will be an ...
As police continue working with the Jewish community, residents are taking measures to protect themselves. A series of carjackings, assaults, home invasions, and other crimes in northwest Baltimore are leading the Jewish community and law enforcement to seek new solutions and increased protections. On Seven Mile Lane, an elderly woman was recently assaulted and robbed inside her home. Due to the vigilance of a concerned neighbor, who safely got the license plate number of the intruder, a suspect was arrested in the case. Other incidents have included multiple robberies at gunpoint, mid-day home invasions, and carjackings that have forced local drivers to worry over their everyday routines. “Having to look over my shoulder has become my new reality,” said a victim of a recent...
French-Jewish families are being forced from their homes in Paris suburbs as Europe continues to be convulsed by levels of anti-Semitism not seen since the end of the Second World War. The Paris commuter newspaper 20 Minutes documents an “internal exodus” during 2017 of Jews from the Seine-Saint-Denis department, saying it is emblematic of broader concerns that French Jews, like their brothers and sisters across Europe, are finding it increasingly difficult to reconcile their faith with the changing demographics of the continent. The paper reports that Jews are leaving their homes on the northeastern fringe of Paris to escape the open hostility that French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe on Sunday condemned as “well-rooted.” The newsp...
President Donald Trump said Friday “it’s a shame what’s happened” with the FBI, calling the agency’s handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation “really disgraceful.” The comments came as Trump departed the White House for a speech at the FBI training academy in Quantico, Va. and an hour after an aide said newly revealed FBI records show there is “extreme bias” against Trump among senior leadership at the FBI. Trump, who has described the agency as “in tatters,” is scheduled to speak at a ceremony at the FBI campus for law enforcement leaders graduating from a program aimed at raising law enforcement standards. He told reporters that “we’re going to rebuild the FBI.” White House Deputy pres...
Baltimore police have arrested what they are calling an active shooter who was involved in a police pursuit in the city. The suspect was taken into custody after a police pursuit ended at the intersection of Gwynns Falls Parkway and Reisterstown Road. The driver, who police say is a 30-year-old male, may be connected to a triple shooting that occurred on Thursday. Police say the suspect shot and critically wounded one man, shot another man, and shot at two others, all while the pursuit was taking place. The incident originated in the Northwest District near Wabash and Rogers avenue, police said. No further details were immediately available.
One of the thousands of firefighters battling a series of wildfires across Southern California has died, but authorities gave no hint of how. San Diego-based Cory Iverson was assigned to the blaze northwest of Los Angeles, which has become the fourth largest in California history. Iverson, 32, was an engineer with a state fire engine strike team. He died Thursday. Dozens of police and fire vehicles escorted a hearse carrying Iverson’s flag-draped body to the county medical examiner’s office in Ventura. Iverson had been with the state since 2009, said Fire Chief Ken Pimlott of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean called for a moment of silence in Iverson’s memory Thursday night at an informational meeting fo...

Israeli police are questioning Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu again as part of an investigation into two corruption allegations surrounding the long-ruling Israeli leader. An Associated Press cameraman filmed police entering Netanyahu’s residence Friday. Media reported it was the seventh round of questioning. One probe reportedly concerns allegations Netanyahu improperly received lavish gifts from Hollywood and business figures. Another is over secret talks with the publisher of major Israeli newspaper Yisroel Hayom in which Netanyahu allegedly requested positive coverage in exchange for reining in a free pro-Netanyahu daily. Netanyahu has denied wrongdoing and dismissed the accusations as a witch hunt orchestrated by a hostile media. The scandals have yet to threaten Netanya...
Berlin police have banned American and Israeli flags at a pro-Palestinian march, after flag burning at previous recent protests prompted outrage in Germany. Police are also trying to crack down on anti-Semitic chants by having translators accompany the Friday march and record any illegal utterances. Jewish leaders condemned anti-Israel and anti-Jewish chants during protests in Germany last weekend against the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Berlin police said the marchers Friday were warned in Arabic and German about restrictions, including the ban on flags. Police said the march will be filmed, adding: “we will not tolerate forbidden utterances.”
Ailing Republican senators John McCain and Thad Cochran missed votes this week, but their presence will be crucial early next week as the GOP tries to pass a sweeping $1.5 trillion tax package in the Senate with a razor-thin majority and all Democrats opposed to the legislation. McCain, 81, of Arizona, is at a Washington-area military hospital being treated for the side effects of brain cancer treatment. Cochran, 80, of Mississippi, had a non-melanoma lesion removed from his nose earlier this week. Adding to the uncertainty on Thursday was Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who said he would vote against the bill if negotiators failed to expand the child tax credit. A Senate Armed Services Committee hearing opened Thursday without McCain in the chairman’s seat and members of the pane...
A draft statement former FBI Director James Comey prepared in anticipation of concluding the Hillary Clinton email case without criminal charges was heavily edited to change the “tone and substance” of the remarks, a Republican senator said Thursday. Some of the edits proposed to the May 2016 draft, obtained by The Associated Press, appear to soften the gravity of the bureau’s findings. Comey, for instance, initially wrote that the FBI believed that Clinton and her aides were “grossly negligent” in their handling of classified information, language also contained in the relevant criminal statute. But the text was edited to say they were simply “extremely careless” in their use of a personal email server, a phrase Comey adopted for his July...
New York and New Jersey announced Thursday how they will pay for their share of an estimated $13 billion project to build a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River and other improvements, with New Jersey’s outgoing governor outlining a plan that calls for progressively steeper fare hikes for train riders in his state during the next 20 years. New Jersey’s Democratic Gov.-elect Phil Murphy, who will replace term-limited Republican Chris Christie next month, immediately took issue with the decision to raise fares. “I’d like to know whether there were alternatives that did not involve further fare hikes and if so why they were not pursued,” he said. “This is the type of deal that tells you a lot about why people are frustrated with politics. You wait...
