President Donald Trump is misrepresenting a report on British crime statistics by blaming an uptick in police-reported incidents on “Radical Islamic terror.” Britain’s Office for National Statistics this week reported a 13 percent crime increase from the previous year in England and Wales. The report says the uptick “reflects a range of factors,” including an increase in incidents, improvements to how crimes are recorded and more victims coming forward. The report does not mention Islam. Early Friday morning, Trump tweeted: “Just out report: ‘United Kingdom crime rises 13% annually amid spread of Radical Islamic terror.’” It was not clear what source Trump was quoting, as that line does not appear in
As the final approval was given for the establishment of Yishuv Amichai, the new home for the expellees of Amona, the first petition to block it has been filed with the High Court of Justice. The petitioners, residents of the PA (Palestinian Authority), tell the court they are the rightful owners of the land designated for the new yishuv. Apart from the claim of ownership of the land, the petitioners demanded that the court order an interim order that would immediately prevent the continuation of construction work in the new settlement. According to them, the area was given to them as a heirloom. The Supreme Planning Council of the Civil Administration approved the construction of Amichai, and Amona Mayor Avichai Boaron welcomed the decision. He also noted that “t...
An image of an American flag waves and the graphic promises “Real News Update.” The re-election campaign of President Donald Trump, already sprung to life two-and-a-half years before his name is back on the ballot, is pushing its own online news source to counteract what it believes is an oppositional media. And its face is a rising star in the president’s orbit: his daughter-in-law Lara Trump. Lara Trump, married to Eric Trump, was viewed by many on the last campaign as a secret weapon after helping deliver her home state of North Carolina for her father-in-law, and she has become a central figure in a nascent re-election bid that already is fundraising, staging rallies and helping the president challenge the credibility of the news media. “People who vote...

The office of Israel’s president says it has received a plea for pardon from a soldier convicted of fatally shooting an already wounded Palestinian terrorist last year. Elor Azaria began serving his 18-month sentence in August after he was convicted of manslaughter in a case that sharply divided the country. President Reuven Rivlin’s office said on Thursday the plea would be considered by “relevant authorities,” in consultation with the Defense Ministry and the military. Israel’s military chief last month reduced Azaria’s sentence by four months but rejected a pardon request.
Former President George W. Bush on Thursday denounced bigotry in Trump-era American politics, warning that the rise of “nativism,” isolationism and conspiracy theories have clouded the nation’s true identity. The comments, delivered at a New York City conference hosted by the George W. Bush Institute, amounted to an indirect critique from a former Republican president who has remained largely silent during President Donald Trump’s unlikely rise to power. The 43rd president did not name Trump on Thursday, but he attacked some of the principles that define the 45th president’s political brand. “We’ve seen nationalism distorted into nativism, forgotten the dynamism that immigration has always brought to America,” Bush said. “We see...
CIA Director Mike Pompeo said Thursday that U.S. intelligence agencies had concluded that Russian interference in last year’s election did not affect the outcome, but that’s not correct. At a national security forum sponsored by a Washington think tank, Pompeo said: “The intelligence community’s assessment is that the Russian meddling that took place did not affect the outcome of the election.” But the assessment, released in January, said the intelligence agencies “did not make an assessment of the impact that Russian activities had on the outcome of the 2016 election.” The CIA said Pompeo was not trying to distort the formal assessment. “The intelligence assessment with regard to Russian election meddling has not changed, and the ...
Just this week, a chareidi family that entered PA (Palestinian Authority) controlled Shechem on their way to Har Bracha, were rescued Baruch Hashem by IDF soldiers. Following that incident, MK (Shas) Michael Michaeli pointed out the dangers and what could have occurred, he calls on the appropriate ministry to install “proper signs” that are easily visible and deliver a clear message to prevent any Israeli from entering a PA autonomous area. Michaeli is confident that the proper signs will prevent future occurrences and the matter is one of priority.
Incoming IDF Chief Education Officer Brigadier-General Tzvika Fairaizen had harsh words during Hoshana Rabba learning in Yishuv Karnei Shomron, blaming the weekly Shabbos Torah sheets in the dati leumi community for the reduction in motivation among youths to enter the IDF. In the transcript that was revealed in the weekly BaSheva newspaper, affiliated with the dati leumi tzibur, reported by Galei Tzahal (Army Radio), the new chief education officer was heard expressing criticism against elements in the right-wing and dati leumi communities. In his remarks, Brigadier-General Fairaizen did not spare criticism of religious and right-wing elements, as well as elements in the secular and left-wing public, who force the IDF into the political vortex instead of running the Knesset debate...
The U.S. government is urging that large, personal electronic devices like laptops be banned from airline checked luggage because of the potential for a catastrophic fire. The Federal Aviation Administration says in a paper filed recently with a U.N. agency that its tests show that when lithium-ion batteries used in laptops, cellphones and other devices overheat in close proximity to an aerosol spray, they can cause explosions capable of disabling an airliner’s fire suppression system. The U.N. agency sets global aviation safety standards. Tests of overheating batteries packed in luggage containing other consumer products like nail polish remover and hand sanitizer also resulted in large fires. The FAA says permitting passengers to carry larger personal electronic devices on...
MDA teams throughout Israel faced a busy swimming season. Over the past five months the organization remained on high alert and provided medical treatment to 234 individuals who drowned and were pulled out of bodies of water. Out of these 234 drowning victims 124 drowned in the Mediterranean Sea, 22 in the Dead Sea, eight in Eilat, eight in the Kinneret, 40 in public swimming pools, 22 in private swimming pools, three in the Sachne and five at the Jordan River. 39 of those victims were pronounced dead, 16 were evacuated to hospitals in critical condition following successful resuscitations, 11 were evacuated in severe condition, 23 were evacuated in moderate condition and 145 were evacuated in mild condition. This year there has been a decrease in the number of drowning cases as last year ...
Former President Barack Obama is stepping back into the political spotlight for the first time since leaving the White House, publicly stumping for Democratic gubernatorial candidates in Virginia and New Jersey in preparation for this fall’s elections. Unlike more low-key appearances earlier this year, Obama’s foray into two states Thursday won’t be a one-and-done. The former president is planning more public appearances as the year closes, and preparation for the all-important 2018 midterm elections begins. “Obama seems to be determined to be an engaged and active former president who’s playing a role in different issues and is involved in politics,” Rutgers University professor David Greenberg said. Obama is hoping to sway voters in New Jersey...
Islamic State terrorists are capable of orchestrating and carrying out an attack against the United States, possibly downing an airplane, even after being evicted from their self-declared Syrian capital of Raqqa, the CIA director said Thursday. Mike Pompeo said the U.S. is threatened by other militant groups as well. “IS’ capability to conduct an external operation remains,” Pompeo said. “But I wouldn’t put them in a singular bucket. Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula has for a long time had this mission statement, which includes the taking down of a commercial airliner bound for a western country. Certainly, among those would be the United States.” Speaking a day after President Donald Trump’s acting homeland security chief invoked the pos...
Members of Congress demanded answers Thursday two weeks after an ambush in the African nation of Niger killed four U.S. soldiers, with one top lawmaker even threatening subpoenas. The White House defended the slow pace of information, saying an investigation would eventually offer clarity about a tragedy that has morphed into a political dispute in the United States. Among the unresolved inquiries: Why were the Americans apparently caught by surprise? Why did it take two additional days to recover one of the four bodies after the shooting stopped? Was the Islamic State responsible? The confusion over what happened in a remote corner of Niger, where few Americans travel, has increasingly dogged President Donald Trump, who was silent about the deaths for more than a week. Asked why, Trump...
Re-airing campaign allegations, President Donald Trump is pointing to an Obama era uranium deal as the “real Russia story” in contrast to a broader inquiry into Russian meddling during the 2016 election. Trump told reporters Thursday in the Oval Office that media outlets have failed to adequately cover the purchase of American uranium mines by a Russian-backed company in 2010, an issue which Democrats have dismissed as widely debunked. The agreement was reached while Hillary Clinton led the State Department and some investors in the company had relationships with former President Bill Clinton and donated to the Clinton Foundation. “That’s your real Russia story. Not a story where they talk about collusion and there was none. It was a hoax. Your real Russia s...
Google’s parent company is throwing its financial support behind ride-hailing service Lyft, deepening its rift with market leader Uber. Alphabet Inc., which gets most of its money from Google’s digital ad network, is leading a $1 billion investment in Lyft that values the privately held company at $11 billion. The investment announced Thursday is being made through Alphabet’s CapitalG venture capital arm. Lyft is still far smaller and worth far less than Uber, another privately held company based in San Francisco whose investors have valued it at nearly $70 billion. But Uber has been enmeshed in internal strife amid management upheaval and allegations of rampant sexual harassment that culminated in the departure of co-founder Travis Kalanick. Uber lured away Expe...
The Shas party has declared war against Bnei Brak Mayor Chanoch Zeibert in response to the battle to save Mosdos Ohr David, affiliated with HaGaon HaRav Daniel Zar. The new storm erupted following the request of the Bnei Brak Municipality to the court to immediately evacuate the building of the girls’ school of Ohr David institutions in Bnei Brak. Shas notes that the appeal was made despite all the agreements on mediation proceedings and the lowering of all legal proceedings, with the immediate risk that dozens of chareidi girls would be thrown into the street without a place to study. As a result, the Shas party will hold a protest rally on Sunday in the plaza of the Bnei Brak municipality, attended by Shas MKs and the parents of the students. Rabbi Zar announced that he h...
The leaders of the 28 members of the European Union are showing their support for the Iran nuclear agreement, despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s opposition to it. EU spokesman Preben Aaman tweeted that the EU leaders agreed at a summit Thursday to show their joint commitment to the international agreement curbing Iran’s nuclear program. The EU leaders called the 2015 deal a pillar of efforts to reduce the global nuclear threat. Some fear that walking away from the deal could compromise chances of encouraging North Korea to negotiate on its nuclear program. Trump “decertified” the deal Friday, angrily accusing Iran of violating it, and directed the U.S. Congress to make it more stringent. The International Atomic Energy Agency has certified eight times t...
The rioting last month in St. Louis following the acquittal of a white former police officer who killed an African-American man, like all rioting in the wake of unpopular verdicts, was ugly and unjustifiable. While the majority of protesters were peaceful, some hoodlums broke store windows and threw rocks at police. The city’s acting police chief, Lawrence O’Toole, came under fire for stating, after calm was restored, “I’m proud to tell you the City of St. Louis is safe, and the police owned tonight.” Georgetown law professor Paul Butler retorted that if “the police actually are in charge, if they actually own the night, that’s a police state, not a free country.” He’s wrong. Empowered police are essential to a free country. The ...
Republicans must now shift their focus to enacting President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax plan, a far heavier lift than the $4 trillion budget plan they’ve muscled through the Senate to lay the groundwork for the first tax overhaul in three decades. The GOP on Thursday narrowly backed the budget plan, a prerequisite to major tax legislation. The Senate methodically worked through a pack of amendments, with Republicans rebuffing Democrats’ successive attempts to reshape the blueprint and derail the tax cuts in the Senate. The final vote was 51-49 with deficit hawk Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky the lone opposing GOP vote. Republicans will have a far harder time approving a complex plan to bring steep tax cuts, especially for corporations, and overhaul the nation’s...
