Uber is enabling passengers to tip its U.S. drivers with a tap on its ride-hailing app for the first time, part of a push to recast itself as a company with a conscience and a heart.
Besides the built-in tipping announced Tuesday, Uber is giving drivers an opportunity to make more money in other ways too.
Riders will be charged by the minute if they keep an Uber car waiting for more than two minutes. Uber also is reducing the time riders have to cancel a ride to avoid being slapped with a $5 fee from five minutes to two minutes after summoning a driver.
Uber won’t take any of the tip money. The San Francisco company will continue to collect part of ride-cancellation fees, as well as the waiting-time charges.

Police are investigating the discovery of a Nazi-themed flag in a storage building at a New York school.
The Post-Star of Glens Falls reports that the black and white flag, bearing a swastika, was found spread on the floor of a barn at the Cambridge Central School campus.
Cambridge-Greenwich Police Chief George Bell says the flag also has an eagle holding a sword and hammer — a symbol of a Hitler youth group.
Bell says people have a right to freedom of expression but it is illegal to trespass in a school building.
The incident was the second involving a Nazi flag in southern Washington County in recent days. The other one was flying in front of a home in Greenwich last week.

President Donald Trump called Saudi Arabia’s new crown prince Wednesday as the U.S. stepped up efforts to mediate a crisis between Qatar and America’s closest regional allies.
The president called Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman after Saudi Arabia’s King Salman appointed his 31-year-old son as crown prince. The elevation places Mohammed bin Salman as first-in-line to the throne and removed the country’s counterterrorism czar and a figure well-known to Washington from the line of succession.
The White House said in a statement that the two leaders expressed their shared commitment to “cutting off all support for terrorists and extremists, as well as how to resolve the ongoing dispute with Qatar.”

An Israel Police spokesman on Wednesday 27 Sivan announced the arrest of three “right-wingers” suspected of planning a price tag attack.
The spokesman stated, “For some time now, the police have been working in Jerusalem in an intensified and complex effort to thwart and prevent right-wing activists from trying to carry out price tag attacks, usually aimed at damaging property belonging to minorities.
“In the context of the complex effort in which focused investigative intelligence activity is being carried out, including advanced technological means, by a central unit in Jerusalem, they were located early Sunday morning and three right-wing activists were arrested in line with police suspicions”.

The U.S. Justice Department says it has reached an agreement with New York state to settle a lawsuit over voter registration opportunities through state motor vehicle offices.
Federal investigators found applications for New York driver’s licenses, permits and identification cards didn’t consistently serve as applications for voter registration for federal elections as required by law.
Under a settlement agreement, New York will make sure a voter registration opportunity will be included with all applications for driver’s licenses and renewals.
Change of address information submitted for driver’s license purposes will also be used to update voter address information.

There was a serious construction site accident on HaShaked Street in Nahariya on Wednesday morning 27 Sivan when a worker fell into a deep pit. MDA officials report the man, in his 30s, was in moderate-to-serious condition when he was extricated from the pit.
Fire rescue extricated the man. One paramedic was lowered down to treat the victim until the rescue could be accomplished. Paramedics add the victim was conscious and alert when transported.

In order to strengthen Turkey as a leading Muslim factor in Jerusalem, Turkish foundations and organizations are pouring tens of millions of dollars into eastern Jerusalem and Har Habayis. Part of the money is Turkish government money, which finances the Tika organization. The family of an unarmed New York City man killed by a police chokehold said they were frustrated that federal authorities still haven’t decided whether to prosecute any of the officers involved in the death.
The family of the slain man, Eric Garner, emerged from a private meeting Wednesday with Justice Department officials saying they had been told that the investigation was still active.
“Once again we are going to be playing the waiting game,” Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr, told reporters after the meeting at a Brooklyn hotel.
“We shouldn’t have to wait like this. It is frustrating. Other cases have been solved that came after us and we are still waiting,” Carr said.

Democrats on a House committee are pressuring the White House to release a wide array of documents about the security clearances granted to former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and top aide.
In a letter Wednesday, 18 members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee said they have “serious concerns” about how the White House is handling classified information and who is being allowed access to such sensitive material.

Tonight is the 28th of Sivan, the yahrtzeit of our beloved mother and wife, Zahava Bas Moshe Abba, a"h, who left us three years ago. For all of those who were close to her, or who were impacted by her, the void that has been left in our lives as a result of her loss is incalculable, and in many ways, it is still very difficult to believe that she is really not here with us. Her legacy of chesed has left a mark on people whose lives were touched by her worldwide. We still hear stories of people whose lives were changed by her, in ways that we were never aware of. President Donald Trump is weighing in on a New Jersey school district where yearbooks were altered to remove three students’ references to him.
The Asbury Park Press reports Trump posted a letter to his Facebook page Monday, thanking Wall High School students Montana and Wyatt Dobrovich-Fago, who previously reported their entries were altered to remove references to Trump.
The letter itself was written by Michael Glassner, the executive director of Trump’s campaign. He sent it to the siblings along with a care package of campaign memorabilia.
Superintendent Cheryl Dyer says the alteration of Wyatt’s photo was unintentional, and that it’s unclear if Montana’s quotation of Trump was intentionally left out.

The Republican congressman shot last week at a baseball practice is making good progress and has been upgraded to fair condition.
That’s the word from MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The hospital issued a statement on Wednesday saying Rep. Steve Scalise, 51, of Louisiana is “beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation.”
The Louisiana Republican has undergone several surgeries since he was shot last week. Scalise and other congressional Republicans were practicing for their annual charity baseball game against Democrats when a gunman started shooting. U.S. Capitol Police and other officers returned fire and killed the gunman.

A consumer watchdog group says those wildly popular fidget spinners aren’t as harmless as they might appear.
Boston-based World Against Toys Causing Harm is scheduled to address spinners and other fad items when the nonprofit organization presents its annual list of unsafe summer playthings on Wednesday.
W.A.T.C.H.’s list highlights potentially hazardous items that parents should avoid.
Authorities in Germany said last week they plan to destroy tons of the tiny twirling gadgets that have been confiscated by customs agents.

The Kremlin voiced displeasure Wednesday about new United States sanctions against Russia and called off much-anticipated talks with a senior U.S administration official in response.
The Trump administration announced Tuesday that it had imposed sanctions on 38 Russian individuals and firms over Russian activities in Ukraine. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the penalties were designed to “maintain pressure on Russia to work toward a diplomatic solution.”
President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said Wednesday that the U.S. move wasn’t constructive and warned of possible retaliation.
