Iowa independents who helped Donald Trump win the presidency see last year’s tough-talking candidate as a thin-skinned chief executive and wish he’d show more grace. Unaffiliated voters make up the largest percentage of the electorate in the Midwest state that backed Trump in 2016, after lifting Democrat Barack Obama to the White House in party caucuses and two straight elections. Ahead of Trump’s visit to Iowa on Wednesday — his first since the election — several independents who voted for Trump expressed frustration with the president. It’s not just his famous tweetstorms. It’s what they represent: a president distracted by investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and a court battle over his executive order barring refugees fro...

Gaza - Egypt on Wednesday trucked 1 million liters of cheap diesel fuel to the Gaza Strip’s sole power plant — a rare shipment that temporarily eased a crippling electricity crisis in the Hamas-ruled enclave but also appeared to undercut Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Abbas has been stepping up financial pressure on Gaza in hopes of forcing the militant group Hamas to cede ground in the territory. Hamas seized Gaza from Abbas’ forces in 2007, and Wednesday’s delivery was the result of a strange new alliance of old foes united against the Palestinian president. The power plant stopped operating in April after Hamas could no longer afford to buy heavily taxed fuel from Abbas’ West Bank-based government, leaving Gazans with just four hours of electricity ...

Some 2,500 students from schools in Modi’in and volunteers involved in an Israel Antiquities Authority archaeological excavation in the town are recovering a fascinating find: According to excavation director Avraham Tendler, “The rings, bracelets and earrings – some of which are made of bronze and silver – appear to have been accidentally dropped during cooking in the kitchen of an ancient tower” * Modi’in mayor, Haim Bibas: “In view of its tremendous success, the project will continue next year.” So just how did 900-year-old rings, bracelets, earrings and hairpins come to be in the kitchen of a Crusader fortress tower in Modi’in? The question may not be one of those in the local student’s next history exam, but it certai...
Delta Airlines says it is the first U.S. airline to use facial recognition technology to speed the process of checking baggage. Delta on Monday debuted four self-serve kiosks for checking bags at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, including one that uses facial recognition technology to match travelers with their passport photos. Airport spokesman Patrick Hogan says the new kiosks are only for checking bags and don’t replace security lines. Travelers use their boarding pass to print check-in tags for their bags at the self-serve kiosks. Those with a passport can use the facial recognition feature. A Delta agent will check the IDs of those who don’t have a passport. The bags are then loaded onto a belt. The airport is Delta’s second-largest hub.
The White House plans to introduce its tax overhaul during the first two weeks of September, says Gary Cohn, President Donald Trump’s top economic aide. Cohn added that the administration wants to bring a finished tax bill to the House and Senate, rather than prolonging talks after its introduction. The administration has only released a one-page outline of its principles to lower tax rates and simplify the tax code. But Cohn said Tuesday at a meeting of technology executives that he or Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin get a phone call each day from President Donald Trump about the overhaul’s status. He said the president “could not be more excited about what we’re doing.”

Drastic reductions to the U.S. foreign aid budget would be “a bad thing” because the relatively small amount of money is well-spent, former President Bill Clinton told a coalition of U.S. humanitarian and development groups on Tuesday. “It’s a bad thing if the government cuts US AID, because it’s a little bit of money doing an outsize amount of good,” Clinton said. The Trump administration wants to cut funding to the U.S. Agency for International Development by nearly one third in the fiscal year starting in October. There is strong congressional opposition to the proposal, part of efforts to slash the diplomatic and development budget from $54.9 billion to $37.6 billion. Clinton was speaking to InterAction, which says the cuts would be “d...
A lawyer for a man accused of plotting bomb attacks in New Jersey and New York that injured 30 people says American jurors no longer need to be educated about Osama bin Laden. Attorney Sabrina Shroff asked a judge Tuesday to block the planned testimony of a government terrorism expert from the upcoming trial of Ahmad Khan Rahimi. The Afghanistan-born U.S. citizen has pleaded not guilty to detonating a pipe bomb near a charity run in Seaside Park, New Jersey, and planting two pressure cooker bombs in Manhattan on Sept. 17. One bomb didn’t explode. The other detonated in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. His trial is scheduled to start days after the anniversary of his arrest. Manhattan federal Judge Richard Berman says he’ll rule Thursday.
