Washington -  Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has declined a request to host an event to mark Islam’s holy month of Ramadan, two U.S. officials said, apparently breaking with a bipartisan tradition in place with few exceptions for nearly 20 years. Since 1999, Republican and Democratic secretaries of state have nearly always hosted either an iftar dinner to break the day’s fast during Ramadan or a reception marking the Eid al-Fitr holiday at the end of the month, at the State Department. Tillerson turned down a request from the State Department’s Office of Religion and Global Affairs to host an Eid al-Fitr reception as part of Ramadan celebrations, said two U.S. officials who declined to be identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Adver...
A Virginia-based federal appeals court pulled no punches in refusing to reinstate President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban, with judges in the 10-3 majority calling the administration’s action discriminatory and its reasoning nonsensical. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals opinion Thursday upheld a Maryland judge’s decision to block the travel ban from taking effect. It was the first appeals court to weigh in on the travel ban. A three-judge panel of the San Francisco-based 9th Circuit is expected to rule soon after hearing arguments in Seattle this month, and the issue is likely to reach the Supreme Court. Here’s a look at what the 4th Circuit decided and what might come next. ——— ARE TRUMP’S CAMPAIGN STATEMENTS RELEVANT? Accordi...

Only close family were invited to the wedding ceremony and, at the request of the family, Arutz Sheva is not publishing pictures from the exciting event. The ceremony was conducted by Otniel Rabbi Re’em Hakohen. “Everyday, one must be happy. Sometimes it’s hard. Very hard,” Meir had written in the past on his Facebook page. “My heart is happy. Amid this week’s celebrations making the 50th anniversary of Jerusalem’s reunification, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority unveiled evidence of the battle of Jerusalem that took place before the destruction of the Second Temple 2,000 years ago. Arrowheads and stone ballista balls fired by catapults were uncovered on the main road that ascended from the city’s gates and the Pool of Siloam to the Jewish Temple, the IAA said Thursday. The artifacts, excavated with the financial support of the City of David Society, tell the story of the final battle between the Roman army and Jewish rebels that ended with the destruction of the Second Temple and the rest of ancient Jerusalem, events that are famously described by historian Flav...
His short term was marked by tensions with the Soviets and support of the space program. At 43, he was the youngest man ever elected president of the United States. Everything about John F. Kennedy seemed young and hip — his thick hair, his cool sunglasses, his stylish wife and two small children, his love of touch football games. Even the name he gave his presidency, the New Frontier, told Americans to buckle up for an adventure. Tragically, though, his term lasted just 1,036 days, ended by an assassin’s bullet in November 1963. As the world moved on, JFK became fixed in time, his youthful image frozen in people’s memories as well as in our history books. So it seems strange to say it, but Monday would be JFK’s 100th birthday. Life and times John Fit...
President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is willing to cooperate with federal investigators looking into ties between Russia and the Trump campaign, his attorney said. The statement from attorney Jamie Gorelick was issued Thursday amid reports that the FBI was investigating meetings Kushner had in December with Russian officials. “Mr. Kushner previously volunteered to share with Congress what he knows about these meetings. He will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry,” the statement said. Meanwhile, the chairman of the House oversight committee asked the FBI to turn over more documents about former Director James Comey’s interactions with the White House and Justice Department, including materials dating back nearly four ...
A local news report says a storm damaged a jet’s cockpit windshield and sent the international flight back to Miami this week. WTVJ reports a Madrid-bound Air Europa flight was forced to return to Miami International Airport on Wednesday night after a lightning strike cracked the co-pilot’s window. No injuries were reported. Airport spokesman Greg Chin says the 178 passengers on Flight 98 departed from Miami at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday but returned two hours later after the damage, reportedly caused by severe weather in the area. Passengers were stranded for nearly 24 hours, but arrangements were made for them to take a different plane Friday morning.
Donald Trump’s administration is pledging a Supreme Court showdown over his travel ban after a federal appeals ruled that the ban “drips with religious intolerance, animus and discrimination.” Citing the president’s duty to protect the country from terrorism, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Thursday that the Justice Department will ask the high court to review the case, although he offered no timetable. The Supreme Court is almost certain to step into the case over the presidential executive order issued by Trump that seeks to temporarily cut off visas for people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The justices almost always have the final say when a lower court strikes down a federal law or presidential action. The case pits the president&rsqu...

This past Shabbos afternoon an 8 year old girl was the victim of a hit and run by a speeding driver, on East 31 Street, between Kings Highway and Avenue P. Boruch Hashem she is recuperating; it is miraculous that she survived. This is the second accident on this block in a year. It’s a long block, with many young children and only a stop sign on the corner and many cars speeding. The community had tried for years to have a speed bump installed, only to have their requests rejected. The girl’s father, concerned neighbors, and community Rabbonim reached out to the FJCC (Flatbush Jewish Community Coalition) for help. The FJCC contacted the Mayors office who requested the NYC Department of Transportation to implement an immediate installation of a speed bump to slow traffic down ...
Preparing for North Korea’s growing threat, the Pentagon will try to shoot down an intercontinental-range missile for the first time in a test next week. The goal is to more closely simulate a North Korean ICBM aimed at the U.S. homeland, officials said Friday The American interceptor has a spotty track record, succeeding in nine of 17 attempts since 1999. The most recent test, in June 2014, was a success, but that followed three straight failures. The system has evolved from the multibillion-dollar effort triggered by President Ronald Reagan’s 1983 push for a “Star Wars” solution to ballistic missile threats during the Cold War — when the Soviet Union was the only major worry. North Korea is now the focus of U.S. efforts because its leader, Kim Jong Un, has...
Washington (CNN)Then-FBI Director James Comey knew that a critical piece of information relating to the investigation into Hillary Clinton's email was fake -- created by Russian intelligence -- but he feared that if it became public it would undermine the probe and the Justice Department itself, according to multiple officials with knowledge of the process. As a result, Comey acted unilaterally last summer to publicly declare the investigation over -- without consulting then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch -- while at the same time stating that Clinton had been "extremely careless" in her handling of classified information. His press conference caused a firestorm of controversy and drew criticism from both Democrats and Republicans. Comey's actions based on what he kne...
