U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has thanked American service members based in American Samoa, citing “challenging times” for the military in the Asia-Pacific. Completing a visit to the region and en route back to the United States, Pence addressed some 200 soldiers during a refueling stop in Pago Pago. He told the troops the Trump administration was seeking a large increase in military funding. During his stop, Pence also dedicated a sign that will greet visitors at a veterans clinic. He met with American Samoan officials and troops and then flew to Hawaii at the last stop on a tour that included a visit to the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea. The trip offered evidence that Pence has become one of President Donald Trump’s chief emissaries on the worl...
Marking Holocaust Remembrance Day on Monday, 28 Nissan, Yad Vashem launched a new online exhibition, “Last Letters from the Holocaust: 1942,” featuring ten emotional letters written by Jews before they were murdered. A two-minute siren sounded at 10:00am nationwide, marking the beginning of the day’s events. As Israel marks Holocaust Martyrs’ & Heroes’ Remembrance Day, Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, calls on the public to submit the names of family members and friends who were murdered during the Holocaust, and to provide survivor testimony about their experiences from this period. To date, Yad Vashem’s Shoah Victims’ Names Project has collected over 4,700,000 names of Jewish men, women and children murdered by the Nazis a...
For nearly 100 days, President Donald Trump has rattled Washington and been chastened by its institutions. He’s startled world leaders with his unpredictability and tough talk, but won their praise for a surprise strike on Syria. He’s endured the steady drip of investigations and a seemingly endless churn of public personnel drama. “It’s a different kind of a presidency,” Trump said in an Oval Office interview with The Associated Press, an hour-long conversation as he approached Saturday’s key presidential benchmark. Trump, who campaigned on a promise of instant disruption, indirectly acknowledged that change doesn’t come quickly to Washington. He showed signs that he feels the weight of the office, discussing the “heart” required t...

At Limmud FSU Moscow, the largest-ever festival for Russian-speaking Jews, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked told the Moscow Jewish community that Israel “would be happy” if Russia moved its embassy to Jerusalem. “The fact that Russia talks about Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel is significant progress for us,” said Shaked, who is also the only secular woman in the Jewish Home party. “We would be happy if Russia would follow the United States’ lead and consider moving the Russian embassy to Jerusalem.” Elaborating on Israeli-Russian relations, Shaked added: “This is a period of prosperity between Israel and Russia. Israeli-Russian relations have never been so positive, and neither has the attitude of the Russian government towar...
Apprentices no more, Eric and Donald Trump Jr. are now at the helm of the Trump Organization and adjusting to the reality presented by their father’s presidency. They’re eyeing ways to use the new lease on the family fame by expanding the brand into parts of the United States that embrace him. Some business has slowed as a result of the pledge to stall international dealmaking while Trump is president. But a U.S. push is planned, and two new hotel chains are being considered — a four-star brand and a less luxurious line — possibly in states where Trump triumphed over Democrat Hillary Clinton last November. “I think it makes it naturally easier if you’re going into a place that’s not adversarial to you,” Donald Trump Jr. said in a recent int...

The leader of al-Qaida urged his followers and other militants in Syria to unite ranks and prepare for protracted jihad, or holy war, in a recording released Sunday night. Ayman al-Zawahri told the jihadis, who control Syria’s northwestern Idlib province and other territory, to remain steadfast and change tactics in order to wage guerrilla war. Al-Qaida began fighting alongside Syria’s rebels early in the civil war and won allies among the opposition because of its military prowess. Al-Qaida’s official branch, the Nusra Front, changed its name to the Fatah al-Sham Front and formally cut ties with al-Qaida last year, but is still widely seen as being linked to the global terror network. In Sunday’s message, released through al-Qaida’s As-Sahab media arm, al-...
Yair Lapid, who heads the Yesh Atid opposition party, hosted ambassadors from various countries in his home on Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes Remembrance Day.
With a budget deadline looming, President Donald Trump plans a whirlwind of activities seeking to highlight accomplishments while putting fresh pressure on congressional Democrats to pay for a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, even if that pressure risks a possible government shutdown. Trump approaches the symbolic 100-day mark for his administration this coming week juggling a renewed health care push and his demands that a must-pass government funding bill should include money for the wall. In a tweet Monday, Trump said his proposed border wall would be “a very important tool in stopping drugs from pouring into our country and poisoning our youth (and many others)!” Over the weekend, he jabbed at Democrats, who vigorously oppose wall funding. “The Democrats don’t...

Israel came to a standstill on Monday as people stopped in their tracks for a two-minute siren that wailed across the country in remembrance of the Holocaust’s 6 million Jewish victims. The ritual is the centerpiece of Israel’s annual Holocaust Remembrance Day for those who were systematically killed by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during World War II. Pedestrians stood in place, buses stopped on busy streets and cars pulled over on major highways — their drivers standing on the roads with their heads bowed. In homes and businesses, people stopped what they were doing to pay homage to the victims of the Nazi genocide, in which a third of world Jewry was annihilated. A wreath laying ceremony at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial followed, with Israeli leaders and...

By dropping charges against major arms targets, the administration infuriated Justice Department officials — and undermined its own counterproliferation task forces. When President Barack Obama announced the “one-time gesture” of releasing Iranian-born prisoners who “were not charged with terrorism or any violent offenses” last year, his administration presented the move as a modest trade-off for the greater good of the Iran nuclear agreement and Tehran’s pledge to free five Americans. “Iran had a significantly higher number of individuals, of course, at the beginning of this negotiation that they would have liked to have seen released,” one senior Obama administration official told reporters in a background briefing arranged by the White H...
