Washington - Donald Trump portrays himself as an indispensable cash resource for fellow Republicans. So far, they’re not seeing much of a benefit. The presidential nominee’s July fundraising provided the Republican National Committee with less than half as much as Mitt Romney’s efforts four years ago, an Associated Press review of the campaign finance documents found. “Typically you see the nominee lift everyone up,” said Chris Schrimpf, a spokesman for Ohio Gov. John Kasich, one of Trump’s defeated primary rivals. The battleground state features a critical Senate race this year, but Trump has all but ignored the Ohio state party. “This time, if anything, everyone else is carrying his water.” The RNC received $18.1 million from jo...
Haifa, Israel - A six-year-old girl from Syria who was treated for her wound and a blood disease at Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center was discharged and sent home on Tuesday after her new Israeli friends held a farewell party and gave her with many gifts, including a first-grade backpack – in the hope that her school is still standing. She was one of the 140 Syrian civilians – men, women and children – that Rambam doctors, nurses and other personnel have treated over the past three years of civil war there. However, the departure of “B” was especially emotional for everyone. Wearing a white dress and shoes and a little silver crown, “B” was the guest of honor at a farewell party held by an entire department, where Jews, Muslims, Christi...
Chicago - A fire at a Chicago apartment building that appears to have been deliberately set killed four people Tuesday, including three children, police said. It took around 200 firefighters three hours to put out the blaze, which began around 1:30 a.m. in a three-story building in the South Chicago neighborhood. Witnesses said they saw residents leap from windows to escape. A preliminary investigation indicated a person returned to the building after a domestic dispute and set fire to the rear porch, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. Officers were searching for a “person of interest wanted for questioning,” he said. An infant was pronounced dead at a hospital, and two other girls — ages 4 and 6 — and a man were found dead later on the third floor...

The state department of health has begun door-to-door outreach in Pinellas County, testing individuals to find other cases, Scott said in a statement. New York - Donald Trump’s campaign is paying more than ever to rent space inside his Trump Tower in New York. Federal Election Commission reports show that the Republican presidential nominee’s campaign paid $35,457 per month for rent and utilities to Trump Tower Commercial LLC between August 2015 and this April. The payment began increasing in May and hit $169,758 last month. The campaign says in a statement the rent hike came as the Trump team expanded from only the fifth floor to also include the entire 14th and 15th floors. It says the rent was calculated based on the average price per square foot in the area. It notes Trump made a $2 million personal donation last month, which more than covers the rent. The Huffington Post first noted the bigger payments.
(JTA) — Three bills that would protect overweight people from discrimination have been introduced in Israel’s Knesset. Lawmaker Tamar Zandberg of the left-wing Meretz party introduced each measure, Ynet reported. One bill, an amendment to the Prohibition of Discrimination in Goods or Services Law, would prohibit denying commercial services to someone on the basis of their weight. An amendment to the Defamation Law would empower overweight people to sue those who insult or exclude them because of their weight. Another amendment, to the Equality and Opportunity in Work Law, would add weight to the list of items that may not be used to discriminate against potential employees. “Overweight persons are discriminated against when applying for work and are...
(JTA) — A senior Paris rabbi defended a string of controversial municipal bans in France on wearing publically the full-body swimsuit known as burkini. Moshe Sebbag, the rabbi of the Grand Synagogue of Paris, told JTA Tuesday he supported in principle the regulations adopted earlier this month in 15 French municipalities, including the famed beach resort Cannes, against the garb, which French Prime Minister Manuel Valls last week said was part of a “political project” to perpetuate female servitude. “It’s a complicated subject and both sides have compelling arguments,” Sebbag said during an interview. While the French state is a “secular country with freedom of religion,” he said, the mayors in question “understood ...
(JTA) — Anti-Semitic graffiti has appeared for the fifth time this month at one of the busiest intersections in the Chinatown section of Washington, D.C. On Monday, swastikas were discovered painted on a street there, the DCist news website reported. A swastika also was drawn on the door of a corner Starbucks, according to the report. The graffiti was found near where vandals earlier in August had painted the word “Jew” repeatedly on the images of rats on an outdoor Chinese Zodiac public art display. Maintenance crews employed by DowntownDC, a private nonprofit that encourages business in the city center, have repeatedly cleaned the graffiti, including the swastikas from Monday. D.C. Police are offering a $1,000 reward through Crime Solvers for information...

Researchers have discovered how Melanoma spreads through the body, a “breakthrough” they hope will lead to cancer becoming nonthreatening and easily curable, according to a new Tel Aviv University study done in cooperation with the German Cancer Research (DKFZ). Melanoma is an aggressive cancer that kills one person every 52 minutes, according to the international Skin Cancer Foundation. The study, which looked at the spread of Melanoma, was published in a Nature Cell Biology article. Scientists found that before spreading, Melanoma tumors send out small vesicles with molecules that trigger structural changes in the skin that prepare it for receiving cancer cells, and transporting them further. The scientists also found chemical substances that can stop the proces...
Nigeria’s military said Tuesday it believes an airstrike has “fatally wounded” Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, but there was no way to confirm yet another claim of the death of Nigeria’s Islamic extremist leader. A statement does not say how the military got the information but identifies other commanders as “confirmed dead” in an air raid on Friday. Read full story at The Associated Press.
Paris - France and Germany pushed Tuesday for Europe-wide rules requiring the makers of encrypted messaging apps such as Telegram to help governments monitor communications among suspected extremists. Privacy advocates argue that encryption is essential to online security, notably for banking transactions. But security experts say encrypted apps are increasingly used by extremists to hide their location, coordinate operations and trade weapons and sex slaves. Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said French authorities have detained three people this month with “clear attack plans,” but police need better tools to eavesdrop on encrypted text conversations utilizing the kinds of powers used to wiretap phones. He and German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere insisted ...
Cairo - WikiLeaks’ global crusade to expose government secrets is causing collateral damage to the privacy of hundreds of innocent people, including survivors of sexual abuse, sick children and the mentally ill, The Associated Press has found. In the past year alone, the radical transparency group has published medical files belonging to scores of ordinary citizens while many hundreds more have had sensitive family, financial or identity records posted to the web. In two particularly egregious cases, WikiLeaks named teenage rape victims. In a third case, the site published the name of a Saudi citizen arrested for being gay, an extraordinary move given that homosexuality is punishable by death in the ultraconservative Muslim kingdom. “They published everything: my ph...
