Baltimore, MD - July 18, 2025  - Hate them or embrace them, the automatic speed cameras on I-83 are here to stay. And they're doubling in count, beginning next month. WMAR-2 News spotted crews along the highway on Tuesday and Wednesday affixing the additional cameras near the West 41st Street Bridge both north and southbound, in the same location the cameras used to be before a move earlier this year. There are currently two near Smith and North avenues. Baltimore DOT confirms that the additional cameras will go live on Monday, August 4 and there will be no grace period, as the department has previously done. Once that happens, speed monitoring on the JFX will encompass about a 6.5 mile section of the highway that's a little more than 10 miles long. Two cameras fac...
Most years the portion of Pinchos is read during the Shabbosos of Bein HaMetzarim, ‘between the straits’ of the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av. It is averred that this is due to our desire to read from the specific sections within this portion of the Moadim, the listing of all the Jewish holidays we celebrate in the course of the year, to express our yearning that these days of mourning over the Churban, the destruction of the Temples, too,  will be transformed one day soon into days of ‘joy and gladness’, as the prophets promised. (בני יששכר) But there is something even more significant going on here. The Midrash quoting Rebbi Levi asserts, that initially before the Sin of the Golden Calf each of the months summer were destined to host a holiday. ...

Washington, D.C. - July 18, 2025 - Maryland joined 19 other states this week in a lawsuit aimed at reversing the Trump administration’s termination of the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program, a key disaster mitigation program. The program, administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, funds state, tribal and local government projects that help fortify people and property against natural disasters, funding things like flood barriers, building reinforcements, wastewater infrastructure improvements or hardened electric grids. The funds can also be used to prepare emergency plans or identify hazards within communities. FEMA typically covers up to 75% of a project’s cost, although smaller, rural communities can receive up to 90%. The s...
Annapolis, MD - July 18, 2025  -  Maryland’s chief tax collector said she is focused on returning tax dollars to the tens of thousands of low-income families who are failing to claim tax credits for which they are eligible. Earlier this year, the legislature set aside $1.2 million over four years to pay for efforts to reduce the number of eligible taxpayers who do not apply for the state Child Tax Credit or for the Earned Income Tax Credit. “As the state’s chief revenue administrator, otherwise known as the tax collector, I believe that our responsibility extends far beyond simply collecting revenue,” Comptroller Brooke Lierman said Thursday. “We must ensure that eligible families understand and can access programs like the EITC and the child tax c...
The US House of Representatives voted overnight to reject an amendment proposed by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) calling for the slashing of half a billion dollars in aid to Israel. “Nuclear armed Israel’s national debt is under $400 Billion compared to our crippling national debt of $37 TRILLION,” Greene wrote on X. “Nuclear armed Israel seems to have their defense and debt under control, so the American taxpayers should not be required to give Nuclear armed Israel another $500 million in our U.S. defense bill.” “This is not a helpless country, and we already give them $3.4 billion every single year in the state — from the State Department. $3.4 billion every single year,” she said on Steve Banon's podcast. “They don’...
Adam Boehler, US President Donald Trump's Envoy for Hostage Response, offered a cautiously optimistic assessment on Thursday of ongoing efforts to secure a hostage deal in Gaza, telling attendees at the Aspen Security Forum that a resolution is "closer than it's been." However, he pointed squarely to Hamas's intransigence as the main impediment to a breakthrough. Speaking with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Boehler highlighted two converging forces that he believes make a deal possible. "One is you have political reality on the ground in Israel, and in that way there's never been a better time," Boehler stated. He attributed this opportune moment to "Bibi's enormous success, and our success in supporting him in Iran, [which] gives enormous strength to him...

I had no business getting behind that wheel. Don't make my mistake   Three years ago, I was just your average nearly-21-year-old bochur from Lakewood, New Jersey. I had friends, plans, and a future ahead of me. But in one moment, everything changed. I made a decision that can never be undone — I got behind the wheel after drinking alcohol. That choice ended someone’s life, permanently injured another person, and launched a brutal legal battle that turned my entire world upside down. Suddenly, my life became consumed by courtrooms, lawyers, and the overwhelming weight of consequences I never imagined facing. It was Friday, July 22, 2022. I was at a to’ameha with a few friends — drinking, laughing, and enjoying the moment....

Baltimore, MD - July 17, 2025 - A vital bridge linking Baltimore’s downtown is deteriorating, as Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s administration persists in spending on the Red Line project amid a looming $1.3 billion transportation budget shortfall. The claims from the governor’s office come as Spotlight on Maryland visited the underside of the Russell Street bridge in Baltimore City on Wednesday. Officially named the Russell Street Viaduct, the six-lane bridge functions as an essential route into downtown Baltimore, where MD Route 295, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, and I-95 intersect near M&T Bank Stadium. Federal Highway Administration records show that the bridge, constructed in 1951, experiences more than 70,000 daily crossings. During S...
Washington, D.C. - July 17, 2025 - The Trump administration will allow a limited amount of telework to federal employees who request a religious accommodation — a narrow carveout to its return-to-office mandate. The Office of Personnel Management, in guidance released Wednesday, told agencies to let employees telework on a limited basis, if they seek a reasonable accommodation on religious grounds. OPM’s guidance states “agencies are strongly encouraged, where feasible, to consider telework as a reasonable accommodation for religious practices.” That includes sabbath holiday observance, scheduled prayers, services, meditation, fasting and other religious obligations. The guidance offers some leeway to the Trump administration’s policy requiring most fe...
