Keeping His Light Alive One year ago, on the ninth of the Hebrew month of Sivan, 21-year-old IDF soldier Sgt. Eliyahu Moshe Zimbalist was killed in Gaza. He had made aliyah with his family from Silver Spring, Maryland, lived in Beit Shemesh, and studied at Yeshivat Shaalvim. During the shiva, Noa and a close friend went to comfort Eli Moshe’s family. They left deeply moved by the family's strength, faith and dignity. On the way home, the two friends couldn't stop thinking about how to continue spreading Eli Moshe’s light in the world. And then a simple but deeply meaningful idea took shape: they would try to make a match between people they knew. They started thinking of names and sharing ideas. Noa mentioned her cousin, and her friend had a brilliant suggestion. Su...

US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Monday dismissed an expert panel of vaccine advisers that has historically guided the federal government’s vaccine recommendations, saying the group is “plagued with conflicts of interest.” The entirety of the 17-member Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which advises the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the vaccine schedule and required coverage of immunizations, will be retired and replaced with new members, Kennedy announced in a Wall Street Journal op-ed. The HHS secretary has authority to appoint and dismiss ACIP members, who typically serve four-year cycles. But removing the entire panel prematurely is unprecedented. Kennedy said that a number of the panel’s membe...
Israel continued Tuesday morning the deportation process of anti-Israel activists who took part in the provocative Gaza-bound flotilla. Leading the flotilla was climate activist Greta Thunberg, who was placed on an El Al flight to Paris. Germany’s Ambassador to Israel reported that a German national who participated in the flotilla met with consular officials overnight and consulted with legal advisors. France's Foreign Ministry stated that six French citizens involved in the flotilla met with the consul in Israel. One agreed to deportation and was flown back to France, while the remaining five refused and were transferred to a detention facility pending legal proceedings that will conclude with their removal from the country. Among those refusing to leave is French Member o...

The group was detained and transferred for further questioning by the Border Police Jerusalem Perimeter Investigation Unit. A Border Police officer conducting operatio...

We were frustratingly so close—just days away—from entering the Land of Israel and launching the golden age of Jewish history. We stood merely a three-day journey from our destiny before everything unraveled. Though we stumbled in several areas, one of the central failures was our misuse of language. Petty complaints and grumbling about desert conditions escalated into slander against Moshe Rabeinu, which soon deteriorated into defamation of Eretz Yisrael itself. We must speak not with moral integrity but with ideological clarity. This past week, two public statements by Torah personalities were deeply unsettling. To write about the sanctity of language while fueling further division would be both hypocritical and counterproductive. For this reason, I will not mention names, ...
Today is a dark day in New York State, as the Senate voted, 35 to 27, to pass the Medical Aid in Dying Act (S.138) to legalize physician-assisted suicide. The Assembly passed the same bill in April; it now goes to Governor Kathy Hochul for signature.  The bill would allow physicians, at the request of patients, to write prescriptions for lethal drugs for patients who are believed by two physicians as having less than six months left to live.  As an Orthodox Jewish organization, Agudath Israel of America is guided by the timeless principle that life is sacred. Our tradition teaches that every human being is created in the image of G-d, and that every moment of life has infinite value. Society legalizing coordinated killing, even in the difficult situation where the victim is in ...
In Shemos, Perek Chof Heh, posuk yud daled, the Torah tells us that one must not take out the “badim” (poles) of the Aron.  The Rambam in Sefer Hamitzvos, asseh lamed daled says the Kohanim were given the mitzvah to carry the Aron from place to place. The Leviim did this mitzvah during the time spent in the midbar since there were so few Kohanim at the time; however, once the Kohanim multiplied, the mitzvah was given to the Kohanim. The Ramban in his glosses in Shoresh Shlishi questions the Rambam’s statement and says that we have a steadfast rule that no part of the Torah ever chang...
Baltimore, MD - June 9, 2025 - Every Sunday morning for the past 18 months, Baltimoreans have marched in solidarity with the hostages held in Gaza, and with the hostages' families.Following last week’s attack on a similar event in Boulder, the march that took place in Baltimore this past Sunday was not simply about showing solidarity with the hostages, but also about not cowering to terror. In an inspiring demonstration of Jewish pride and determination, over 400 people from across the spectrum of our community assembled on Sunday at Har Sinai-Oheb Shalom for Baltimore’s weekly walk for the hostages. People of all ages, along with rabbis, community leaders, and local politicians, joined together to publicly and loudly proclaim that the Baltimore Jewish community will...
Roughly 500 Marines are deploying to the Los Angeles area to protect federal buildings and personnel in the wake of weekend protests over immigration that have already led President Trump to federalize National Guard troops, defense and congressional officials said. The troops, which are assigned to 29 Palms, Calif., won’t engage with protesters, the officials said. The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The decision to send active duty forces into a U.S. city marked an escalation of the use of military troops to quell domestic unrest and came over the objections of California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has called the federal intervention an intrusion on state sovereignty. The troops, which could arrive in the ...
The UK House of Commons scheduled a parliamentary debate for today to discuss a petition seeking to outlaw non-stun ritual slaughter, a move which would directly affect halal and kosher practices, The Independent reported. The petition, which garnered over 109,000 signatures, frames the method as “barbaric” and calls it incompatible with modern British values. If passed, the ban would end longstanding religious exemptions allowing both Jewish shechita and some halal methods to proceed without pre-slaughter stunning. Supporters argue that animal welfare should override those exemptions; opponents contend that ritual slaughter follows strict religious guidelines and humane protocols. Currently, UK law requires stunning for most meat, but permits exceptions for religio...

Baltimore, Md - June 9, 2025 - The Maryland Supreme Court upheld a state law banning gun possession by people who have been sentenced to two years or more in prison, calling it comparable to a ban on gun possession by felons, whether the underlying crime was a felony or not. Despite a string of recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings that have greatly strengthened gun rights, the high court has not suggested that the Second Amendment “prohibits the enactment of laws banning the possession of guns by categories of persons thought by a legislature to present a special danger of misuse,” the Maryland court said Friday. Maryland’s law is such a law, said the opinion by Maryland Chief Judge Matthew Fader. “Based on our conclusion that § 5-133(b)(2) [the ...

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said California will sue the Trump administration on Monday over its deployment of the National Guard to quell Los Angeles protests against federal immigration raids. In an interview Sunday evening on MSNBC, Newsom said the lawsuit would challenge Trump’s federalizing of the California National Guard without the state’s consent, a move with little precedent in U.S. history. “Donald Trump has created the conditions you see on your TV tonight. He’s exacerbated the conditions. He’s, you know, lit the proverbial match. He’s putting fuel on this fire, ever since he announced he was taking over the National Guard — an illegal act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act,” Newsom said on MSNBC. ...
