New York - An appeals court has thrown out the massive civil fraud penalty against President Donald Trump, ruling Thursday in New York state’s lawsuit accusing him of exaggerating his wealth. The decision came seven months after the Republican returned to the White House. A panel of five judges in New York’s mid-level Appellate Division said the verdict, which stood to cost Trump over $515 million and rock his real estate empire, was “excessive.” After finding that Trump engaged in fraud by flagrantly padding financial statements that went to lenders and insurers, Judge Arthur Engoron ordered him last year to pay $355 million in penalties. With interest, the sum has topped $515 million. The total — combined with penalties levied on some...

Baltimore, MD - Aug. 20, 2025 - Ed Hale Sr. announced his candidacy for Governor of Maryland on Wednesday morning. The announcement took place at Canton Waterfront Park. Hale outlined his vision and priorities for the state, and focused on economic growth, public safety, education, and quality of life. The owner of the Baltimore Blast, Hale is now 78-years-old, and originally announced his intentions to run for governor as a Democrat in May. "I was the worker kid, cutting the grass, painting houses, things like that," he said in May. The self-made businessman has a wide range of professional experience. With no family money or college education, he went on to join the military before becoming the CEO of First Mariner bank, which went bankrupt during the Great Recession and w...
So who is the oldest Jew in the world? Last week I wrote here about the 105th (!) birthday of Renee Binstock. This week, I was delighted to hear from the Mamo family; compared to their grandmother, Renee is practically a youngster. Their grandmother, Aliza Mamo, will soon celebrate her 106th birthday. Her grandson, Ilan Shevah, relates: “Grandma was born on the island of Djerba, Tunisia, in 1919. As a child and teenager she was active and full of energy—helping the elderly, running errands for her parents, dashing through the narrow alleys of the Jewish quarter. She grew up under the influence of Djerba’s sages and righteous men, absorbing holiness and yirat Shamayim. “After her marriage, our grandfather worked outside the home and she raised the family almost sin...

Baltimore, MD - Aug. 20, 2025  - There has recently been a surge in oil and gas production thanks to President Donald Trump's pro-energy policies. The National News Desk’s Jan Jeffcoat asked former White House economic advisor Steve Moore to compare what the U.S. is seeing now under Trump vs. the Biden administration and former President Joe Biden’s anti-fossil fuel climate policies.
Energy is a big issue where these two presidents took diametrically opposite approaches,” Moore told Jeffcoat during a one-on-one interview Wednesday. “Trump is into, as you called it, ‘Drill, baby, drill,’ and we’re seeing some of the fruits of that.”
Moore said the major U.S. Department of Energy statistical division just...

Annapolis, MD - Aug. 20, 2025 - Is Maryland Gov. Wes Moore the nation’s most disappointing governor? That’s the provocative question raised in a new op-ed, sharply criticizing Moore’s handling of state finances, crime, and accountability. Despite recent polling showing Moore maintains a high approval rating, local economist and registered Democrat Anirban Basu says he’s failed to deliver any of the sweeping changes that he campaigned on. Basu noted Maryland lost its coveted AAA bond rating this year, a perfect credit score the state held for more than five decades. He also blames overspending in Moore’s first two budgets for this year’s $3-billion-dollar budget shortfall, triggering $1.6 billion in new taxes. “Meanwhile, governors in North...
