Baltimore, MD - Aug. 8, 2025 - Many drivers are unaware when one or more of their vehicle’s lights are not working. For safety and to avoid unnecessary citations, it is advisable to check all lights at least once a month. If possible, enlist the help of a second person. Activate all lights — including headlights, parking lights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and license plate lights — and have the observer confirm each is functioning correctly. If a second person is unavailable, use a reflective surface such as the plate glass window of a storefront. Park head-in to check front lights and reverse-in to check rear lights, using the reflection to confirm proper operation. Fully functioning lights are critical for road safety. In addition, police may stop ...
I still remember the strain on my neck as I stood by the base of a gigantic redwood, slowly looking up to try and see the top of the tree, which – in my 10-year-old brain – seemed to have never ended. Honestly, I think that if I were to go back to the Redwood National Park in California today, I would feel that same strain, even though I have personally grown a couple feet since that family trip many years ago. After all, the coastal redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) are considered to be the tallest trees in the world, rising over 300 feet into the sky!One of the most ironic and perplexing aspects of the redwood tree is that despite their magnificent height, they have a root system that is extremely shallow, reaching, on average only 6 to 12 feet deep! The question is: how c...

Baltimore, MD – August 8, 2025 - In response to growing concerns from residents of the Pickwick housing development, the community came together Thursday evening to host a much-needed Electric Scooter and Bike Safety Workshop aimed at educating local youth about safe riding practices. Over the past few weeks, many adults in Pickwick observed troubling behaviors among neighborhood children on electric scooters and bikes. Children were frequently seen riding without helmets, darting from between parked cars, speeding down the middle of the street, and sometimes traveling in large swarms that blocked traffic. The safety risks became too pressing to ignore. To address the issue proactively, residents organized a brief but impactful workshop and added a sweet incentive: free Kon...
A historic synagogue in Odessa, Ukraine, sustained significant damage following a Russian drone strike this week, one of several Jewish sites caught up in intense bombardments this summer. The Nachlas Eliezer Synagogue in the Peresyp district of Odessa, which was built in 1898 and served the Jewish community until it was closed in the 1920s under Soviet rule, was struck Monday evening by a Russian suicide drone. The strike caused a large fire in the building, which had already partially collapsed in 1992, according to the United Jewish Community of Ukraine. No injuries were reported. “This sacred building, constructed at the end of the 19th century, served as a place of prayer, hope, and spiritual strength for the Jewish community of Odesa,” wrote Rabbi Moshe Azman, a leadin...
Washington, D.C. - Aug. 7, 2025 - The US Department of Education said on Thursday that it is investigating Baltimore City Public Schools over allegations of tolerating antisemitic incidents. The investigation was ignited by a complaint from the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish advocacy group, against school leaders. The Department of Education said in a written statement that its investigation will look at numerous alleged incidents of antisemitic discrimination and harassment by teachers and non-Jewish students against Jewish students. It's the latest investigation that the Trump administration has launched into schools and universities across the country in response to what the administration calls a wave of "radical left" policies that have led learning institution...
Baltimore, MD - Aug. 7, 2025 - A Florida man has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for conspiring to damage or destroy electrical facilities in the Baltimore area. Brandon Russell, 30, of Orlando, was sentenced Thursday to two decades behind bars, followed by a lifetime of supervised release. Prosecutors say Russell orchestrated a plan to damage multiple electrical substations with the intent of causing widespread blackouts and chaos in the Baltimore region.
“Russell allowed hatred to drive him and his co-conspirator to plot a dangerous scheme that could have harmed thousands of people,” Kelly O. Hayes, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland said, via press release. “The sentence imposed today reflects the gravity of Russell’s egregious...
