Baltimore, MD - April 1, 2025 - Dear Friends: The conversation of federally funded private school tuition scholarships has become more pronounced over the last number of months, especially since the current administration and congressional leadership took over in January.  In Maryland, while we are fortunate that the BOOST Scholarship Program appears to be safe once again for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year, the program's impact is rather limited. Only families qualifying for Free and Reduced Meals (185% of federal poverty guidelines) are eligible to receive a scholarship, and due to the volume of applicants and state funding constraints, many eligible families are not awarded scholarships. Similarly, the Maryland 529 and its State Contribution Program/Match component has it...

For a while, the people of Solterra in Orlando Florida struggled with simmering resentment against the “Passover guests,” as they called the religious Jews who rented homes in their community on Pesach. Many of the visitor’s behaviors mystified the local residents or left them frustrated and embittered.  Avromi Perkowski has made every effort to make himself available to the non-Jewish homeowners and answer their many questions: Why do these Jews bring so many things with them? Why do they insist on covering security cameras and disabling motion detectors before the holiday begins? Why do they walk in the streets instead of the sidewalks, and why do they cut through other people’s private property on their way to shul?  “Communication is the key,&r...

Annapolis, MD - Arpil 1, 2025 - A Maryland bill proposing the establishment of a commission to study reparations, including financial restitution, is expected to clear its final hurdle in the House of Delegates with only days remaining in the 2025 legislative session. Senate Minority Whip Justin Ready, R-Carroll and Frederick Counties, told Spotlight on Maryland he is confused as to why this bill is being advanced as the state faces a historic $3.3 billion deficit, which is forecasted to balloon to $6.7 billion by fiscal year 2028. “We don’t have the money right now to be exploring these options, period,” Sen. Ready said. “[T]he issue of reparations, I’m sure elicits strong opinions, but the fact is it’s just something that’s not financ...

State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman published today (Tuesday) findings that he presented to the IDF and the political echelon before October 7, 2023 on the IDF positions on Israel's northern border. Soldiers who were stationed in the border area complained to the Comptroller that the guidelines for when they are permitted to open fire were not appropriate for the threats they faced. In addition, the Comptroller warned that reserve soldiers did not receive appropriate weapons. Commanders testified that they were repeatedly forced to cancel patrols due to malfunctions in the patrol vehicles. Englman said that "the Simchat Torah massacre of October 7 resulted from numerous and serious failures in protecting the country's borders. In a surprise inspection, which we conducted at ei...

Baltimore, MD - March 31, 2025  - Eighth grade test scores in Maryland have been declining for many years — and not just because schools shut down during the coronavirus pandemic. Math and reading scores tested annually have steadily dropped for more than 10 years, with reading scores matching lows recorded in the mid-1990s in the state and math scores in a free fall. Several education experts told The Baltimore Sun the reasons for the continual decline are unclear. “The honest answer is, we don’t know,” said Michael Petrilli, president of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute. Petrilli added that the trends in Maryland aren’t unlike the rest of the country.

In 2024, Hopkins reviewed the joint venture and determined Broadway Services would be closing after over 40 years, according a Hopkins spokesperson in a statement sent to The Baltimore Sun. The decision was announced to all employees in October, providing them with eight months of not...
