Baltimore, MD - July 14, 2026  -  Gas prices across Baltimore have risen 17 cents per gallon over the past week, according to new data from GasBuddy, as gas prices nationwide increased for the first time since May. The average price of a gallon of regular gas in Baltimore was $3.86 on Monday, nearly 20 cents higher than the $3.69 recorded July 8 by GasBuddy. Prices are also 71 cents per gallon higher than they were a year ago. A new round of attacks between the United States and Iran in the Middle East may have contributed to the increase, according to a GasBuddy analyst. “The turnaround comes as oil prices have surged following the collapse of the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran and the start of new attacks, with oil jumping another 4% in Sunday evening t...

Baltimore, MD – July 12, 2026 – Today, Chaverim of Baltimore held its annual Member Appreciation BBQ at the Meadowood Park Pavilion. Volunteers and their families enjoyed a delicious BBQ, snow cones, and a custom cake. The event also featured a special awards presentation ceremony recognizing outstanding dedication. So far this year, Chaverim has responded to more than 2,700 calls, continuing to be an invaluable resource to the Baltimore community. While many of those calls involve roadside assistance—such as jump starts, tire changes, and car lockouts—Chaverim's work extends far beyond that. Volunteers regularly assist with house lockouts, gas refills, generator and heater support, traffic control, and even vehicle pull-outs. Their ability to respond to such ...
Annapolis, MD - July 12, 2026 - Maryland lawmakers passed a new rule this year that is projected to save utility ratepayers in the state $20 million a year. But actually getting those savings for Marylanders will take more legwork — potentially a lot more. On July 2, a trio of Maryland agencies banded together to ask the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to make several utilities stop charging consumers a surcharge for participating in the regional electric grid, which is operated by PJM Interconnection. They point to the new law, that took effect July 1, requiring utility companies to be a part of a regional grid. Though it was technically optional before the law passed, utility participation in the regional grid has become commonplace. “There’s no reason to pay...
Baltimore, MD - July 12, 2026 - Coalition for Jewish Values, representing over 2,500 traditional, Orthodox rabbis in American public policy, mourns the passing of Senator Lindsey Graham, a steadfast friend of Israel and the Jewish people, whose moral clarity and courage distinguished his decades of public service. He confronted antisemitism, defended religious liberty, and treated Jewish concerns with seriousness and respect. Senator Graham understood that America’s bond with Israel is rooted not only in strategic partnership but in shared moral purpose. He championed Israel’s security with unwavering resolve, strengthened U.S.–Israel defense cooperation, and stood firmly against efforts to delegitimize the Jewish state. His voice was consistent, principled, and deeply i...

State officials had warned last week of potential health problems from the record high temperatures, which hit triple digits on several days.  And Wednesday’s update of the Weather-Related Illness Data Dashboard from the Maryland Department of Health confirmed it. The Torah records this week the forty-two encampments we traveled to over the course of our thirty-eight year sojourn through the desert before entering the land. One of those encampments was at Mount Hor where Aharon ascended to die there. The Torah also refers to the earlier event that took place immediately after Aharon's departure, as reported in Chukas, how The Canaanite king of Arad, who dwelled in the south, heard that Israel had come by the route of the spies, and he warred against Israel and took a captive from it. (במדבר כא א) The verse in our portion pithily states, The Canaanite king of Arad, who dwelt in the south, in the land of Canaan, heard that the children of Israel had arrived. (שם לג מ) The Torah omits any mention of the war the king of Arad waged,...
Parshas Massei begins with reciting our journey from Mitzrayim to Eretz Yisroel, listing all the stops along the way.  Many meforshim point out the spiritual journey which was necessary in order to fully transform from slaves into the Am Hanivchar.  Indeed, the Rambam who in several places adamantly proclaims that the unfolding of the world and its history is in mans hands, says seemingly contradictorily that it was always Hashem's plan for Bnei Yisroel to spend forty years in the Midbar.  It was simply inconceivable to leave slavery and within one year rise to the level of spirituality needed to be the Ohr Lagoyim for time infinite. I have had the privilege to spend substantial time in Eretz Yisroel over the last twenty years.  Recently, when I have been going th...
