Baltimore, MD - Aug. 18, 2025 - I'm writing to you today with a very personal request. My brother Irwin has been battling liver cancer and non-alcoholic cirrhosis. His only curative option at this point is a living donor liver transplant. The liver is a truly amazing organ—it regenerates. A healthy person can donate a portion of their liver, and it will grow back to full size within weeks. This incredible gift could save Irwin’s life. We are looking for a healthy individual between the ages of 18 and 60 with blood type A+, A-, O+, or O-. Irwin is currently being evaluated at several of the nation's top transplant centers, including: - Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore) - NYU Langone Health (New York City) - University of Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore) Irwin...
Baltimore, August 18, 2025 – An apparent explosion on a ship near the Francis Scott Key Bridge was quickly brought under control, according to Baltimore City fire officials. Fire department spokesperson John Marsh confirmed that no injuries were reported among the crew. Witnesses said the vessel, loaded with coal, had just departed the CSX Coal Dock when the incident occurred. Mike Singer, a member of the Baltimore and Chesapeake Bay Shipwatchers group, noted that the explosion happened at 6:28 p.m. He added that coal ships typically leave the dock four to six times each week, often carrying crews of up to 30 people. The situation has been fully contained, and officials report no further danger to the public
When events erupt in real time, they are difficult to process. When they unfold at a rapid, almost breathless pace, the challenge becomes even greater. Such was the experience in the desert during those first two years. A storm of events swept through the camp: the calamity of the egel, the sabotage of the spies, the failed uprising of Korach. Trauma followed trauma, leaving little space for reflection. The constant swirl of upheavals made it impossible to weave these episodes into a coherent narrative, let alone to situate them within the broader arc of Jewish history. It is for this reason that in Sefer Devarim Moshe reframes the first two years of the desert journey. Sefer Devarim is Moshe’s great act of retelling, transforming the chaotic events of forty years—particularly...

A re-intensified Category 4 Hurricane Erin with 140 mph winds will continue to strengthen and turn northeastward this week, churning up "life-threatening surf and rip currents" along the Eastern Shore, according to the latest forecast. Despite remaining well offshore, the hurricane is expected to impact Maryland's beaches by the middle of the week, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center. "These rough ocean conditions will likely cause life-threatening surf and rip currents," the National Hurricane Center said. A beach hazards statement was issued until 8 p.m. Monday for the Eastern Shore. "Swells from Hurricane Erin will bring a high risk of dangerous rip currents beginning Tuesday and continuing for much of the week," the National Weather Service o...

Hamas told Egyptian and Qatari mediators that they agreed to the latest Gaza hostage-ceasefire proposal, a source familiar with the details told The Jerusalem Post on Monday.  The proposal would see the release of ten living Israeli hostages in return for a 60-day ceasefire, and the release of 150 terrorists serving life sentences.  The source told the Post that the proposal will be presented to Israel already on Monday.  The proposal on the table would also see Israel suspend military operations in the Gaza Strip for 60 days, and could be seen as a path to reach a comprehensive deal to end the war, an Egyptian official told Reuters.  Axios reported that Hamas's response "aligns 98 percent" with the proposal by US President Do...

Baltimore, MD - Aug. 17, 2025 - . As President Donald Trump declared Washington, D.C., a crime-ridden wasteland in need of federal intervention this week and threatened similar federal interventions in other Black-led cities, several mayors compared notes. The president's characterization of their cities contradicts what they began noticing last year: that they were seeing a drop in violent crime after a pandemic-era spike. In some cases the declines were monumental, due in large part to more youth engagement, gun buyback programs and community partnerships. Now members of the African American Mayors Association are determined to stop Trump from burying accomplishments that they already felt were overlooked. And they're using the administration's unprecedented law enforcem...
The Linkage of Freedom to Torah Torah learning is not just a central mitzvah. It is also the only way to achieve true freedom. Rebbe Yehoshua ben Levi derived this idea from the Torah’s description of the writing on the Luchot as “charut,” a word spelled the same way as “cheirut, free.”[1] What did Rebbe Yehoshua mean by this teaching? In what way do those not involved in Torah learning lack freedom? And what is the connection to the Luchot? Many meforshim associate Rebbe Yehoshua’s statement with an earlier one of Rebbe Nechunya ben Hakanah: “The ol (yoke) of malchut and of derech eretz are removed from one who accepts the ol of Torah.”[2] Man was created to work;[3] he gets to choose which kind of work to focus on. He can opt for ...
Baltimore, MD - Aug. 17, 2025 - A 13-year-old boy with 18 prior felony arrests in Baltimore has been arrested again. Baltimore police say the suspect was arrested in connection with a series of armed carjackings and robberies that occurred across the city in late July. Police said the incidents began on July 26 when Southern District officers were dispatched to 2510 Ashton Street for an attempted carjacking. According to officials, the victim of the attempted carjacking told officers she had been in the 2300 block of Guilford Street when two unidentified male juveniles got out of a black Hyundai and ran toward her. The victim says she got back into her car, and both males entered and struck her multiple times with an unknown black object before she reversed and the suspects f...
Baltimore, MD - Aug. 17, 2025 - State documents obtained detail the timeline of the Johns Hopkins Hospital diesel fuel spill. The documents also reveal new safety measures the hospital must now put in place. The investigation into the spill is still ongoing, reports indicate. Some of the seven state reports reveal concerns about equipment, a lack of documentation and mandated preventive measures that still aren’t fully in place. According to the documents, the hospital asked Shipley Energy Transport, LLC to deliver 7,000 gallons of diesel fuel to one tank, and 7,000 gallons to another. The tank field cannot be seen from the location of the fill area. One report shows the hospital did not have a tank gauge stick onsite to verify readings of the tank, w...

Wshington, D.C. - Aug. 17, 2025 - When Pete Buttigieg was asked a question about Israel and Gaza this week on “Pod Save America,” the former transportation secretary and possible 2028 presidential contender answered in a way that matched many Democrats’ stances on Israel: broadly supportive of the U.S.-Israel relationship while sharply critical of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his role in the humanitarian crisis. But after facing a barrage of attacks on social media from progressives and anti-Israel activists, Buttigieg did an about face and gave in to critics, telling Politico on Thursday that he would have supported recent Senate resolutions seeking to block certain arms sales to Israel and that he would recognize a Palestinian state as part of ...
