Baltimore, MD - Oct. 28, 2024 - Baltimore Jewish Home's 613 Seconds with Baltimore native Rabbi Shmuel Chaim Naiman, Founder of Healthy Jew, Foraging Guide, and Mashgiach Ruchani at Yeshivat Lev HaTorah

At 19, I came to Eretz Yisrael to learn in the Mir, and I’ve been learning and teaching Torah here ever since. My family and I currently live in Ramat Bet Shemesh. (Here’s the secret to staying in EY: marry an Israeli, and you’re stuck!)
BJH: And now you’re also in the health and wellness field. How did you get into this?

In one of his final addresses to the Jewish people, Moshe says,
“For this commandment which I command you this day, is not concealed from you, nor is it far away. It is not in heaven, that you should say, “Who will go up to heaven for us and fetch it for us, to tell [it] to us, so that we can fulfill it?” Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, “Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us and fetch it for us, to tell [it] to us, so that we can fulfill it?” Rather, [this] thing is very close to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can fulfill it (Devorim 30:11-14).”
The commentaries are bothered by one simple question, “which commandment is Moshe referring to?” “And he sent forth ...
In the first Pasuk of Parshas Noach, there is a Rashi which calls out for deeper analysis and explanation. The famous Rashi, “B’Dorosav”, quotes conflicting opinions in Chazal as to what the pasuk means when it says that Noach was a Tzadik “in his generation”. One opinion is that Noach was a complete Tzadik. The other view is that Noach was only a Tzadik “B’Dorosav” – when compared to the Reshaim of his generation. This derogatory description even goes so far as to say “Had Noach lived in Avraham’s Dor, Lo Nechshav Klum- he wouldn’t have been recognized as an outstanding individual”. This Rashi raises several difficult issues.
First, it is unusual for Chazal to have a disagreement a...
