This shiur, delivered at Yeshivas Beis Meir in Lakewood on Chanukah 5786, recounts a historic episode from nearly a century ago. As a young man, the Steipler Gaon shared a Torah insight with his brother-in-law, the Chazon Ish, during Chanukah. That Torah thought so impressed the Chazon Ish that he chose him as a shidduch for his sister, and the Shidduch was finalized. Years later, a great talmid chacham challenged that very Torah insight and remarked, with irony, that “the din of the shidduch should therefore be botel.” This unique shiur serves as a halachic analysis and response to that claim, clarifying the issue through careful halachic reasoning. The Shidduch is on!

Talya, a devoted Yiddishe mother, sits beside the hospital bed of her one-year-old daughter, Sheina Yafa.   Born with a severe brain bleed, Sheina was later diagnosed with "neuroblastoma" - a rare, aggressive cancer. Since the day she entered this world, Sheina has been fighting to live.   And Talya has been fighting with her - with tefillos, tears, and every ounce of strength a mother can have.   But the treatment - their only hope - is far beyond what the family can afford. Every cent has already been used.   Now, as we gather around our menorahs and sing "Maoz Tzur", Talya is begging for a miracle.   She turns to Klal Yisrael - to you - and pleads: “Help me save my daughter’s life.” This is not just...

Greater Manchester Police are receiving calls from Jewish children requesting the presence of armed officers at Hanukkah celebrations, amid heightened fears linked to antisemitism and recent attacks on Jewish communities, the force’s chief constable said. Sir Stephen Watson made the remarks at a Policy Exchange event in London, describing a reality in which heightened security around Jewish life has become routine. He said it has long been “normal” for Jewish children to attend schools protected by fences and guards, a situation that has intensified in recent months. “October 7 started to lift the heat dramatically, in terms of the actual threat posed to our Jewish communities and the perceptions of the threat posed against our Jewish communities,” Watson sa...
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday that would reschedule marijuana to have fewer restrictions after decades of being classified as one of the most dangerous drugs. "I'm pleased to announce that I will be signing an Executive Order to reschedule marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule III controlled substance with legitimate medical uses," Trump said while surrounded by medical professionals supporting his decision. "I want to emphasize that the order I am about to sign is not the legalization [of] marijuana in any way, shape, or form — and in no way sanctions its use as a recreational drug... It's never safe to use powerful controlled substances in recreational manners," he explained. The order is expected to reclassify marijuana fro...

Several members of the community helped sponsor the refreshments. Rabbi Chaim Schwartz represented the Jewish Caring Network (JCN) board and led Tehillim for the cholim. Rabbi Chananya Jacobson spoke with deep gratitude, noting that his son is recovering, chasdei Hashem, and has been a recipient of the support offered by Tikva House. Live music and tours of Tikva House made the evening truly memorable.
Baltimore, MD - Dec. 18, 2025  - The picture completion test showed an image of a door with the top hinge missing. The psychologist prompted the child to identify what was missing. She scanned the door briefly and answered, “the mezuzah”! Of course she was right, but that answer was not scorable. Our children see the world through a different lens. As adults, we are proud of their perspective and work hard to maintain it by limiting their exposure to pop culture and the outside world while strengthening their connection to our heritage. When a child has a disability, it was historically very difficult to access services in a culturally appropriate manner. Twenty years ago, Ms. Marjorie Shulbank was the Section Chief for the Family Support Network in the division of speci...
