Baltimore, MD - Feb. 11, 2025 - Abe Diamond, z"l, passed away 40 years ago, 13 Shvat, 5745 / Feb. 4, 1985. I still miss him - his humility - his guidance - his intelligence - his warmth - his sense of humor - the list can go on and on. I was a few years younger than Abe - It may have been in my first year of college and I often met Abe on Strathmore Avenue on the way to Shomrei Emunah. Most married men would have very little patience for a college kid but Abe and I always had common areas of interest- photography, business, theater to name a few. Our friendship grew over the years and we continued to discuss these common interests. His business was growing (eventually it became Food-A-Rama - the second or third largest chain of supermarkets in the State of Maryland), yet he always woul...
Baltimore, MD - Feb. 11, 2025 - "At today’s Baltimore City Fire Department hearing, we heard about the burden placed on Baltimore City EMS by hospitals that have wait times that are over double what they should be. Unfortunately, LifeBridge Health Sinai Hospital came in last place. BCFD shouldn’t be transporting patients to hospitals that don’t meet the level of care our constituents deserve."
Washngton, D.C.  Feb. 11, 2025  - A Democratic congressman is facing heat from conservatives on social media after promoting the idea of a "street fight" at a protest pushing back against Elon Musk’s recent efforts to slash government waste through the newly created DOGE office. "This will be a congressional fight, a constitutional fight, a legal fight, and on days like this a street fight, yes we will stand," Democratic Rep. Kweisi Mfume, who has represented Maryland’s 7th Congressional District since 2020, said at a rally in Baltimore on Monday outside the Social Security Office.  Mfume, who was elected to fill the seat of the late Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings, added that DOGE stands for "the department of government evil."Conserva...

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with former White House senior adviser Jared Kushner during his visit to Washington last week, Axios reports. The pair discussed a number of issues including US President Donald Trump’s controversial plan for the takeover of the Gaza Strip, the report says, citing senior officials familiar with the meeting. Kushner, who is married to Trump’s daughter Ivanka, was reportedly a driving force behind Trump’s plan and was involved in crafting the announcement on the matter, which the president made alongside Netanyahu at a White House press briefing. Kushner had appeared to hint at the plan —  which involves emptying the Strip of its residents and turning it into “the Riviera of the Middle East” — in a speech...

Washington, D.c. - Feb. 11, 2025 - US President Donald Trump and his Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff have secured the release of Marc Fogel, an American teacher who has been detained in Russia since 2021, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz announces in a statement. Waltz says Witkoff and Fogel are currently leaving Russian airspace after Witkoff and several other Trump aides traveled to Moscow in order to negotiate an exchange. Fogel’s release “serves as a show of good faith from the Russians and a sign we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine,” Waltz says. “Since President Trump’s swearing-in, he has successfully secured the release of Americans detained around the world, and President Trump will continue until all A...

Tel Aviv, Israel - Feb. 11, 2025  - The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday evening officially announced the cessation of negotiations for the second stage of the ceasefire deal with the Hamas terror group. Under the ceasefire agreement, Hamas will return Israelis kidnapped during the October 7 massacre in exchange for Israel's release of terrorists, including some who are serving life sentences. Israel has also ceased strikes on Hamas in Gaza, and withdrew from key areas, including the Netzarim Corridor. A diplomatic source noted that the decision to cease talks for the second stage, which would include additional Israeli withdrawals and compromises, as well as the release of young men who were taken hostage, Hamas violated the agreement "and therefo...
Rabbi Yitzhak Yakubovich, rabbi of the Drom Hasharon Regional Council, penned a letter to his students regarding the custom to eat dried fruits on the holiday of Tu B'shvat, and urging them to carefully choose the fruits that they eat during the holiday. "We will make a special Tu B'shvat seder at night, for the success of the nation of Israel, the release of the hostages, and the success of the IDF's soldiers and security forces," he wrote, noting the tradition adopted by kabbalists in Tzfat, who stressed the blessing of Israel's fruits on this day. Rabbi Yakubovich also spoke about the custom to eat dried fruits, which began during the years of exile due to a lack of fresh fruits during the winter, and stressed the importance of being aware of where the dried fruits...
Baltimore, MD - Feb. 11, 2025 - Baltimore City Council President Zeke Cohen and Councilman Issac 'Yitzy" Schleifer held a press conference on Monday with area business owners and residents that have been affected by Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE) rate increases. During that press conference, Cohen announced that the Baltimore City Council will have a hearing to address the rising costs of gas and electricity for the people of Baltimore. According to the Baltimore Sun, a record-breaking 80,000 BGE customers had their power shut off in 2023 after falling behind on their energy bills. Officials say that BGE has tripled its gas delivery rates in the past decade, including on Jan. 1, 2025, when the company increased rates again. Last week, officials announced the Ratepayer Prot...
President Donald Trump is unleashing almost daily executive orders to reshape the federal government — and opponents, including the state of Maryland, are just as quickly filing legal challenges to block policies that put “Marylanders and Americans at risk.” That’s how Attorney General Anthony Brown (D) described his decision to join in several of the lawsuits that other states’ attorneys general have filed to counter the blizzard of initiatives since Trump was sworn in on Jan. 20. “Every day in the last three weeks … It’s waking up to a natural disaster or some other crisis – this sense of urgency, the need to act,” Brown said Monday at the Office of the Attorney General in Baltimore. “Here we have a federal government t...
Annapolis, MD - Feb. 11, 2025 - Thousands of people tuned in to virtual town halls with members of Maryland’s congressional delegation last week, seeking answers to lingering questions about the flurry of changes to the federal workforce. A Thursday night meeting by Reps. Glenn Ivey (D-4th) and Steny Hoyer (D-5th) was originally to be held on Zoom, but was expanded to the phone because of increased interest. Ivey said more than 14,000 people participated. Hundreds more attended an Instagram live virtual meeting on Friday afternoon with Rep. Sarah Elfreth (D-3rd), seeking answers to questions about the government’s deferred resignation offer and other changes to federal agencies. The meetings came after a federal judge Thursday temporarily paused President Donald Trump’...
Annapolis, MD - Feb. 11, 2025 - Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown is continuing his relentless pursuit of legal action against President Donald Trump's executive agenda. On Monday Brown joined yet another lawsuit, this time targeting the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) accusing them of "unlawfully cutting funds" for health research at universities around the country. Brown claims Trump is violating previous funding agreements approved by Congress. A judge agreed and ordered a pause. The multi-state lawsuitcomes after NIH announced last week its intention to slash indirect cost rates to 15 percent. These cost rates mostly entail federal reimbursement for expenses incurred by institutions conducting research. Bro...
Baltimore, MD – Feb. 10, 2025 – A disturbing act of antisemitic vandalism has targeted a well-known display in front of Azi Rosenblum’s home, where posters of the Israeli hostages taken on October 7th have been prominently featured for months. Rosenblum’s yard has become a local symbol of solidarity, displaying images of the hostages kidnapped by Hamas, serving as a constant reminder of those still held captive. However, this past weekend, a vandal defaced the display in a shocking and offensive manner—adding posters featuring images of Jewish children unrelated to the hostage crisis, as if to mock or undermine the display’s message.                     ...
What Is Your Response to Reality? I am writing from the plane, on my way to New York, to meet more of the Jews who were affected by the events of October 7, and who are waking up and changing. And this is exactly what we see at the beginning of our Torah portion, Parashat Yitro: The whole world heard about Yetziat Mitzrayim. Everyone talked about it. But there was one person who stood up and did something. Parashat Yitro begins, “And Yitro, priest of Midian, Moshe’s father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moshe and for Israel His people." Yitro hears about the transition from slavery to freedom, about the new tidings in the world, and he does not remain indifferent. He hears, internalizes, and takes action: "And Yitro, Moshe’s father-in-law, came." Yitro le...
