What Did You Take Home From Israel?
“What will you take home with you from your visit to Israel?”
I put that question to a group of American college students who had come to Israel for a week of volunteering and Jewish learning with Birthright Israel and Manhattan’s MJE. We were standing on the rooftop of the Aish HaTorah building, overlooking the Western Wall, after a beautiful Kabbalat Shabbat service.
Here is what they said. I think Israelis need to hear their answers too.
The first student said she had not felt well all week. “But when I went to a pharmacy, I could tell that people really cared. They tried to help me and make me feel better. Our Israeli guides kept checking in on me too. That doesn’t happen in New York. I truly felt at home.&rd...
Baltimore, MD - August 5, 2026 - Soaring beef prices and a shrinking domestic cattle herd are hitting the kosher beef market hard, and consumers expect to face shortages going into Yom Tov season.
Mr. Arie Benjamin, owner of Wasserman and Lemberger said his supplier just informed him that Salomon's beef prices are going up 10 percent. That's on top of a 30-percent hike during the past year and a half.
He said that other major brands have not yet said that they'll be raising prices, but they expect them to do as well.
There's no American meat out there. There's no cattle. This is going to be the hardest Yom Tov season for meat. People have to wake up early and have patience to get piece by piece, because there's not going to be much American meat available...

Parshas Eikev falls between the two places in the Torah where we are warned of the calamities which would befall Klal Yisroel if they turned away from Hashem. In between those readings of Parshas Bechukosai and Ki Savo we also experience Tisha B’Av, when we vividly recall and reflect on many of those warnings which came to pass on multiple occasions in our history. Rashi explains that this 'service of the heart' is ืชืคืืื — prayer.
This verb ืืขืืื — to 'serve' G-d seems to be uniquely applied to fulfilling the obligation to pray, but not generally used in describing our duty regarding other commands.
There is one other area where we use this verb definitively. The service in the Temple with all its associated activities in bringing offerings are termed ืขืืืื — service.
The word ืขืืืื usually conjures up an image of hard work, as indicated in the noun used to describe an ืขืื — as a slave or servant.
