This past Shabbos, our community lost someone whose impact is almost impossible to measure: Rabbi Shlomo Porter, ZT”L, founder of Etz Chaim. For decades, Rabbi Porter stood at the forefront of kiruv in Baltimore, building what would become one of the longest-standing outreach organizations in the country. But titles never captured who he was. If you want to understand what makes a true kiruv professional successful, it isn’t marketing or programming or clever campaigns. It’s heart – an oversized heart with room for anyone who needed it.

Wshington, D.C. - Nov. 21, 2025 - Since the government shutdown, the feds have begun setting its sights on waste and fraud within the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as SNAP.
Delays to SNAP benefits became a rallying cry during the shutdown, forcing beneficiaries to wait weeks for payouts.
Here in Maryland it's well documented that thousands of SNAP users have reported their benefits stolen.
A lot of this has to do with EBT cards not being equipped with security chips that are typically used to prevent hacking or fraudulent charges.
The USDA has launched a dashboard breaking down the number of stolen benefits in all 50 states, tracking how much its costing taxpayers.

Frederick County, MD - Nov . 21, 2025 - The Maryland Department of Health has reported the first cold-related illness death for the 2025-2026 winter season.
A man in Frederick County, between 30 and 40 years old, has died.
The Department of Health reminds Marylanders to be prepared for the coldest months of the year.
"To prevent the onset of cold-related illnesses, including hypothermia and frostbite, Marylanders should limit their time outside and wear several layers of lightweight insulated clothing to avoid exposure to cold weather," says the Maryland Department of Health. "Be sure to insulate your toes, fingers, ears, cheeks, and the tip of your nose."
If you need a warming center or overnight shelter, you're encouraged to call your local department of health or 2-1-1.

Pollard said he had initiated the conversation with the ambassador to express his "sincere appreciation" for Huckabee's efforts on his behalf while he was in prison, as well as for the support shown to his late wife, Esther. Annapolis, MD - Nov. 20, 2025 - The auditor for the state legislature is raising concerns about an increase in the number of unresolved findings as his agency reviews government operations.
More than one-third of compliance issues identified by the Office of Legislative Audits this year were findings repeated from previous audits. About 10% of those findings were included in two or more previous audits, according to a report presented Wednesday to the Joint Audit and Evaluation Committee.
“And for perspective, OLA has not seen repeat percentages this high since just prior to 2010,” Christine Timanus, deputy auditor at the Office of Legislative Audits, told committee members.
