Maryland consumers can shop tax free the week of Aug. 14 during an annual event timed for back-to-school shopping.

During Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week, from Aug. 14 through Aug. 20, consumers will be exempt from the state's 6 percent sales tax on any single, qualifying article of clothing or footwear priced at $100 or less. The tax exemption applies regardless of the number of items purchased.

"A break on the cost of clothing and shoes can make a real difference and help stretch family budgets," Comptroller Peter Franchot said in an announcement Tuesday. "Local retailers also benefit with increased foot traffic."
