A full day of programs was held in the Israeli Knesset to remember forty years since the historic visit of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat to Jerusalem. Speaker of the Knesset MK Yuli Edelstein opened the Tuesday events with Ambassador of Egypt to Israel Hazem Khairat, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mk Tzipi Hotovely, in the Knesset auditorium.

Large photos from those historic moments were on display outside the hall, including photos of First Ladies Aliza Begin and Jihan Sadat.

Israeli and Egyptian flags were displayed on the stage during the panel discussions. The first panel included Former Minister Moshe Arens and Aide to then-Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan and former Deputy to the President of the Supreme Court, Justice (ret.) Elyakim Rubinstein. The place of the Knesset in the Peace Agreement was the topic. All those present when Sadat's plane landed 40 years ago in Israel, reminisced about the overwhelming optimism and disbelief of the experience, which only days before seemed impossible.

Journalist Dan Margalit moderated the second panel on the durability of the Peace Agreement, with MK Yaakov Perry, Former Ambassador of Israel to Egypt Zvi Mazel and President of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategic Studies Prof. Efraim Inbar.

Looking forward, the third and final panel, included Minister of Intelligence and Minister of Transportation and Road Safety MK Yisrael Katz and Dore Gold, Former Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and current President of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs.

In the Knesset Plenary, following the panel discussions, MK Katz was seated next to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Prime Minister's speech was poorly attended, even his coalition members were not to be seen. Israel iwants peace, has always wanted peace, said the Prime Minister. "I have now met with the Egyptian ambassador to Israel, Hazem Khairat and his team, he gave me greetings from Egyptian President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi and Foreign Minister Shukri, and I congratulated him on this important occasion. The peace between Israel and Egypt is robust, it is strategic peace benefiting both countries.

At his speech at the Knesset, Sadat spoke clearly: "We do not want to surround you, or that you surround us with missiles meant to destroy, or with bombs of hatred and enmity. I have declared more than once that Israel is an existing fact. This was the first step towards the peace treaty formulated In Camp David: a clear recognition of Israel. This is what Sadat did, unlike our Palestinian neighbors who to this day refuse to recognize our nation state.

Sadly I say: I have yet to encounter a "Palestinian Sadat" that will declare his will to end the conflict, recognize the state of Israel with any borders, and support our right to live in peace and security."

Opposition leader MK Yitzhak Herzog rose to speak after Netanyahu.

Though cold and wet outside, much of the day in the Knesset, was filled with warm memories.
