Jerusalem, Israel - Apr. 25, 2016 - Chug Ayelet Chapter of AMIT Women in Jerusalem, Israel, holds an annual event called - Book and Author. After a generous buffet luncheon, a lecture is given by the author of a newly published work of merit. In recent years, Member of Knesset Aliza Lavie and Rabbi Ronnie Ziegler have been featured at this successful fund raising event.

This year at Book and Author, which was held before Pesach, former Maryland resident Judy Clark received special recognition and honor for her decades of dedicated service to AMIT in organizing and presenting quality lectures and programs.

The event was chaired by Doris Levine and Sylvia Berns, assisted by former Maryland resident and current President of Chug Ayelet Ellen Miller.

Dr. Fred Gottlieb was honored to introduce his son-in-law as the guest speaker. Professor Adam Ferziger, originally from Riverdale, N.Y., learned at the Bet Midrash L’Torah (BMT) in Jerusalem and at Yeshiva Har Etzion. Ferziger received  Semicha from Yeshiva University in 1990, where he received his B.A. as well his M.A. degrees. In 2001, Ferziger earned his Ph.D.  summa cum laude in Modern Jewish History. His thesis was the basis of his first book, published in 2005, “Exclusion and Hierarchy.” That book has been followed by five scholarly works, the latest of which, “Beyond Sectarianism: The Realignment of American Orthodox Judaism” was published in 2015, winning the 2015 National Jewish Book Award.

Ferziger holds the Samson Raphael Hirsch Chair for Research of the Torah with Derekh Erez Movement in the Department of Jewish History and Contemporary Jewry at Bar-Ilan University, Ramat-Gan, Israel. His research over the years has been focused on Jewish religious movements and religious responses to secularization and assimilation in modern and contemporary North America, in Europe and in Israel.

Prior to embarking full time on his career as a researcher, Ferziger was a lecturer at Bar Ilan and served as a pulpit rabbi in Kfar Saba, where he lives with his wife and six children.

Miriam Litke, delivered a dvar Torah at the start of the meeting. At its conclusion, Estelle Fink, was recognized for getting another impressive speaker. It turns out, that as a talmid at Har Etzion Yeshiva, Ferziger used to go to the Fink home in Jerusalem for Shabbat meals.

Rena and Rabbi Emanuel Quint hosted the over 50 women who attended. Especially proud was mother of the speaker, Sandra Ferziger-Gottlieb. Included in the photo essay with participants are active AMIT volunteers with long-time Baltimore connections Marion Talansky and Sarah Shane.
