President Reuven Rivlin this afternoon (Monday) paid a condolence visit to the family of Police Corporal Hadar Cohen, 18, who was murdered in a terror attack while on duty outside Jerusalem’s Old City, Wednesday 3 February 2016.

As he arrived to the family’s home, he embraced Hadar’s parents Ofer and Sigalia, and her siblings Mor and Yaron. The President spoke with them about Hadar’s bravery and heroism, and said to Ofer, “When you saluted your daughter by her graveside, the whole people saluted with you. As it is written ‘Over your walls, David’s city, I set my guardsmen’ today it should added, guardswomen.”

Hadar’s father responded, “They say to me Hadar is a heroine of Israel. I think of the many people she saved.  If she had lived, you would have come to shake her hand for her courage, but instead we are sitting in mourning, here, where just months ago we celebrated her recruitment into national service.” He went on to explain to the President that the evening before the attack he had spoken to Hadar by phone and asked she look after herself. He said, “I asked her to be alert, and look all around.”

President Rivlin said, “She paid attention very well, and knew exactly what she was doing. Her actions prevented a large disaster.”

Sigalia, Hadar’s mother, told the President that next month, Hadar was due to celebrate her 19 birthday. “Hadar had dreamed from a young age of being a combat soldier, and she realized that dream. I hope that I will be the last bereaved mother, and that no family should know such pain,” she said.

Hadar’s older sister Mor spoke of their close relationship, and said, “Hadar was a warm and giving child. During this week of mourning, we have heard many stories about her. I believe that the way to commemorate her life is to instil that love and warmth that she had, in each and every person.”

The President listened to the family and said sadly, “There is no hesitation. These fighters know their job and the responsibility which rests on them. Hadar and those who were by her side threw themselves in the way of the terrorists. Our hearts are with you, we are proud of your children who unwaveringly keep watch over us.”
