Jerusalem, Israel - Feb. 7, 2016 - The Israeli Defense Force  Paratrooper Brigade, חטיבת הצנחנים,was founded in 1955, with Ariel Sharon as the first commander. Soldiers from this infantry unit were the first ones to enter the Old City, and capture the Western Wall and Har Habayit in June 1967. They reclaimed the Jewish holy sites which had been under Jordanian occupation since 1948. At a swearing-in ceremony for IDF soldiers held at the Western Wall Plaza on Thursday night, new paratroopers were in the Old City, this time for their swearing-in ceremony.

Months of intense physical training followed a selection process which includes physical and emotional tests. Members of this voluntary elite unit are expected not only to be leaders, but also cooperate and work together. Paratroopers can be recognized by their maroon colored berets and reddish-brown boots.

Thousands of relatives and friends gathered to watch the ceremony held in Jerusalem, Israel. At these ceremonies new IDF soldiers receive a rifle and and a Tanach.

Among the hundreds of uniformed new soldiers were dozens of IDF lone soldiers, including Gil Kuttler from Baltimore and from Silver Spring, Maryland, Isaac Dubrawsky.
