In response to Donald Trump’s statement Monday that he would be open to visiting Russia should he win the presidential election in November, the Kremlin said it would welcome any US candidate seeking to improve relations.

“I think I could see myself meeting with Putin and meeting with Russia prior to the start of the administration,” Trump said in an interview Monday with radio host Michael Savage.

“I think it would be wonderful.”

Addressing reporters after Trump’s statement, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s assertion that he is “ready to welcome any candidates who stand for improving relations and dialogue between our countries.”

“Moscow is ready to react positively to any attempt for dialogue,” Peskov was quoted as saying by Reuters Wednesday.

In a news conference at the White House with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, Obama criticized Trump’s approach to Russia.

“Any characterization that somehow we have improperly challenged Russian aggression or have somehow tried to encroach on their legitimate interests is just wrong,” Obama was quoted as saying by various media.

Trump, who described U.S. relations with Russia as “really catastrophic” and blamed Obama and rival Hillary Clinton for the above, has been criticized for praising Putin and dictators such as Saddam Hussein.

“Mr. Trump’s continued flattery of Mr. Putin and the degree to which he appears to model many of his policies and approaches to politics of Mr. Putin is unprecedented in American politics,” President Obama was quoted as saying during his joint news conference with Prime Minister Renzi.
