Baltimore, MD - Mar. 28, 2024  -  As plans form to clear a disabled ship and the debris of the Key Bridge so Baltimore's port can reopen, Maryland authorities on Thursday requested an initial emergency relief funding of $60 million from the Biden Administration. Analysts at Barclays told CNN insurance claims from the catastrophe that has closed the nation's ninth-busiest port could range from $1 billion to $3 billion. The bridge by itself could be worth more than $1.2 billion, said Loretta Worters, a spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute. When President Joe Biden spoke about the fatal Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore, he vowed that, with the help of Congress, the federal government would pay for the entire cost of the cleanup, as well as construct...

In it, she states that haredim must be drafted starting on April 1st and that support must be revoked from yeshivas after a short acclimation period. "With the deadline for the decision, and in the absence of an alternate normative framework, from April 1st, there will be no source of authority allowing for the continued blanket avoidance of procedures to draft yeshiva students. As the state stated in its preliminary response to the petition from February 21st, in this situation all state officials will be obliged to act on procedures to draft yeshiva students in accordance with the law. She added that "in the absence o...
Baltimore, MD - Mar. 28, 2024  - One of two drivers responsible for the death of six construction workers on I-695 last March, will spend the next 18 months behind bars. Melachi Brown previously pled guilty to six counts of felony auto manslaughter, and was facing up to 78 years in prison. However in January, the Baltimore County State's Attorney's Office agreed to a plea deal. The way it breaks down is prosecutors asked for 10-years for each offense, totaling 60 years. However, they recommended all but three months be suspended for each count, which is how the 18 months came about. Brown will serve three-years of supervised probation upon release. Up until Thursday, Brown was placed on pre-trial home detention, with orders not to drive. He has no prior criminal record....

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison for fraud tied to the collapse of his digital exchange, capping his meteoric rise and fall. Less than two years ago, Bankman-Fried was the crypto king. The moptop millennial hobnobbed with heads of state, soaked up Caribbean views from his $30 million penthouse and vowed to use his wealth to better humanity. Last year, a jury found the 32-year-old guilty of stealing billions of dollars from FTX customers and defrauding investors and lenders to his crypto investment firm Alameda Research.  Bankman-Fried, standing with his hands clasped, told the judge before sentencing Thursday that he was haunted every day by what he had thrown away. “I was responsible for FTX, and its collapse is...

Petach Tikvah Israel – Six months after Hamas’ heinous attack on October 7th and the start of Israel’s Operation Iron Sword, Beilinson Hospital, one of the country’s largest medical centers, is treating soldiers returning from Gaza for epileptic seizures due to traumatic head injuries. Dr. Felix Benninger, Beilinson Hospital’s deputy director of its neurology department who specializes in epilepsy, is taking care of soldiers experiencing epileptic seizures and in need for preventive pharmacological treatment. “Since the seizures do not always present themselves immediately, it is possible that we will continue to see more soldiers returning from Gaza with epileptic symptoms for years ahead. Approximately, 15-30 percent of severe head injuries can lead ...
Baltimore, MD - Mar. 28, 2024  - More than 24 hours following the Key Bridge collapse, ship arrivals and departures at the Port of Baltimore remain suspended. The impact is expected to be significant, not only for residents in the Baltimore region who depend on goods and services being delivered, but also port workers who could be missing out on a paycheck. State Senate President Bill Ferguson, who represents the area, estimates that number to be over 15,000. Together he and Maryland Delegate Luke Clippinger are drafting emergency legislation to provide "income replacement for workers impacted by this travesty." Exact details of the bill are unclear. It's expected to be drafted by week's end, just days before the General Assembly wraps up on April 8. The legislation to...

The officials hinted that a military operation in Rafah is expected to begin around the holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which falls in the middle of April this year. Egypt, according to the report, warned against an operation in Rafah and said that "the perceptions presented by Israel are especially dangerous and will lead to an additional escalation, not only in the Gaza Strip but a regional escalation." Joe Lieberman, an Orthodox Jew himself, was a friend of Agudath Israel and the Orthodox Jewish community, participating in Agudath Israel events and championing the needs of the community. Senator Lieberman, dubbed the “conscience of the Senate,” was a strong supporter of Israel, and worked to ensure its security both during and after his tenure as senator. Senator Lieberman was also closely involved with Orthodox Jewish leaders, such as Rabbi Moshe Sherer, legendary president of Agudath Israel of America, and Rabbi Herman Neuberger, the venerable late president of Ner Israel Rabbinical College. The s...
The Orthodox Union is deeply saddened by the news that Senator Joseph Lieberman passed away today at the age of 82. Joe Lieberman was a member of our community who made history and was mekadesh shem shamayim while doing so. After a distinguished career as Attorney General of Connecticut and U.S. Senator, Joe Lieberman was the first Jewish American nominated to a national ticket as the Democratic Party’s nominee for Vice President in 2000. He was a leader on so many critical public policy issues: support for Israel, religious liberty, civil rights, school choice, environmental protection and more. Throughout his work on these issues and while ascending the heights of American politics, he also remained steadfast in his commitment to and observance of Orthodox Judaism. Wh...
