The RCA joins the entire Torah world mourning the death of Rabbi Aharon Yehuda Leib Shteinman, zt"l, one of the 20th and 21st century's most widely respected decisors of Jewish law and one of the great communal leaders. Rav Shteinman who passed away Tuesday morning at the age of 104, was fully committed to the ideal of a life of Torah study, and one of the forces behind the remarkable growth of the Kollel movement in Israel. Yet, he was also an important moderating voice in the Israeli Haredi community.

Rabbi Elazar Muskin, president of the RCA, said, "Rabbi Shteinman, zt"l, was universally respected for his erudition and insights. He served as a leader whose advice and guidance in all matters of Jewish law and public policy were sought.  He was a member of the pantheon of great Torah scholars whom he knew personally throughout more than a century of living, learning, leading and teaching.  His presence and inspiration will be sorely missed."

We note, that even the political leadership of the State of Israel understood the key role that Rav Shteinman played. As Prime Minister Netanyahu said "With the death of Rav Steinman, the Jewish people lost a central beacon of spirituality, heritage and ethics. He was an important link in the chain of Torah which spans millennia. His memory will forever remain in the pages of our nation's heritage."
