A 20-year-old Navy midshipman killed in last year’s Amtrak crash in Philadelphia was honored with a street co-naming outside his high school in Rockaway on Friday.

Friends, family and elected officials gathered outside the Channel View School for Research where Justin Zemser had graduated in 2013 as the class valedictorian.

A portion of Beach Channel Drive was co-named “Midshipman Justin Zemser Way.”

“It’s an honor," said his mother, Susan Zemser, who wept throughout the emotional ceremony. “My son was very special to the community.”

Zemser was one of eight passengers killed when the speeding train derailed in Philadelphia on May 12, 2015.

“There are hundreds, maybe a thousand or so people at the naval academy that wish they could be here right now because he touched so many people’s lives,” said Mitchell Bond, 21, one of Zemser’s roommates at the Naval Academy.

Tears mixed with laughter as friends recalled funny moments with the Rockaway native, who was also a member of the Navy sprint football team and had worked as an intern for City Councilman Eric Ulrich.

“He was somebody who truly embodied the American Dream, so today is only fitting that we name this street in his honor to keep his memory alive and to honor his service to our community and to our country,” Ulrich said at the ceremony.

Susan Zemser said the recent fatal train crash in Hoboken has left her shaken.

“It’s terrible,” she said. “Basically the same thing — the conductor passed their speed. It’s not the first one.”
