A Jewish cemetery in the Town of Warwick was found vandalized this week with several swastikas and the words “Heil Hitler,” according to various media. Jon Gottlieb, the president of the Village of Florida’s 70-year-old Temple Beth Shalom, said he was alerted to the vandalism through a call Sunday from Warwick police, Record Online reported.

The synagogue’s rabbi, Rebecca Shinder, was quoted  as describing the vandalism as “intensely personal,” adding that she has never experienced anything comparable before.

The letters SS, referring to the Schutzstaffel, Hitler’s military and security force, were also found written on pillars and the stone wall at the cemetery’s entrance.

In an interview with the Times Herald-Record, Shinder said the vandalism, “Is not just about the swastikas and Nazi Germany, even though ‘Heil Hitler’ was written on the stones. It represents hatred and persecution of the Jewish people throughout the centuries. It’s a symbol of hatred and intimidation.”

Police investigation into the vandalism is still ongoing.
