Medical helicopters and emergency crews from numerous local and state agencies raced to the scene of a major accident with multiple deaths Monday night on Interstate 95 near Orlando, Florida, authorities said.

The crash was reported about 6:30 p.m. ET near Titusville, in Brevard County about 40 miles east or Orlando, the Florida Highway Patrol said. There are "confirmed fatalities on-scene," it said.

NBC station WESH of Orlando, quoting state troopers, reported that three people were dead. Brevard County Fire Rescue said there was a total of 11 patients, six of them requiring trauma treatment.

All northbound lanes of I-95 were closed for nearly four hours and didn't reopen until almost 10:30 p.m., the Highway Patrol said.
