 Dear Friends,

I am trying to write this letter while my keyboard is drowning in tears. I spent the day yesterday with Avrom and Michal Gruen, from Cleveland, at the Pittsburgh Children's Hospital; watching as they sat at their 7 year old daughter’s bedside for hours, begging and praying for her to wake up, even for an instant. One eye opened for a second, and there was a moment of relief, albeit for just a short moment. Just view Michal’s video and you’ll feel the same emotions I am experiencing.

The Gruen family is recovering from a terrible car accident early Friday morning.  Avrom was driving with 5 of their 6 children on Rt. 80 heading back to Cleveland, when they struck an overturned tractor-trailer that was lying across the highway in the dark.  They were first sent to a local hospital and then transported by the Med-Evac team to the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, due to the severity of their injuries.

One of the children has a laceration to the liver but is boruch H-shem up and responsive. Another has a broken leg and a broken jaw (has now been able to return home to the other siblings).  A third child is in serious and critical condition, and has had one surgery and will need more for the liver, pancreas, and diaphragm. And a fourth child has a very serious brain injury and we are hoping for the best.

Two of the children and the family have a long, hard road to recovery and will need help in many ways. Some expenses will be covered by insurance, much of it will not be. Outside of the medical expenses, the community is mobilizing and has hired an aid to assist with the children, while the parents are in the hospital with the girls.  Living expenses, child-care (including for the 4 month old baby), insurance, utilities, meals, and transportation must be covered to allow the parents to focus on being with the children that are in the hospital. Money must be raised to help in the road to recovery. WE NEED YOUR HELP! While the family did not wish to be a burden to klal, they finally agreed to allow us to help them through this painful ordeal.

Michal told me that she knows that this happened right before Rosh Chodesh Elul, so people would have something to help them realize how precious life is and how much our children mean to us. It is a reminder for all of us to undertake something that will help us be better, and in turn will be a zechus for a refua for her daughters.

The family survived an accident that according to science is impossible to explain how anyone could have lived.  We know that Hashem is the ultimate healer and miracle maker. We have to appeal to our father in heaven to continue the miracles he already started with the Gruen's and in the zechus of our tefillos and actions, may we merit to see a refua shelaima to:
