BALTIMORE (WBFF) – A 15-year-old suspect who police described as a “repeat, violent offender” was arrested for a series of carjackings reported in the Park Heights neighborhood on Sunday.

The carjackings were reported between 1:45 a.m. and 8:25 p.m.

  • 1:45 a.m.: 6300 block Park Heights Ave (Maxima)
  • 10:30 a.m.: 3100 block of Bancroft Rd (Honda Accord)
  • 3:20 p.m.: 3500 block Bancroft Road (Chevy Impala)
  • 8:25 p.m.: 3200 block of Szold Drive (Hyundai)

According to investigators, the juvenile suspect committed "at least" four other offenses earlier this year, in January, February and March. Police noted there was a juvenile warrant out for his arrest after he removed a monitoring box from his ankle on April 12. He was due in court on April 13, where he didn’t show up, police said.

“We’ve talked over and over again about juveniles and juvenile crimes,” Baltimore Police Spokesperson T.J. Smith said in a briefing on Monday. “This case is going to sound very familiar to a lot of people because they’ve heard me, they’ve heard the commissioner, they’ve heard other commanders stand up here before you and talk about this ongoing problem with people who have proven themselves to be criminals, to consistently get out."

A community group, Shomrim of Baltimore, was credited by investigators on Sunday for helping to apprehend the suspect.

“I was notified by a few different community members, community leaders as well as the safety patrol group that was responding to these incidents,” Baltimore City Councilman Yitzy Schleifer said Monday. “I immediately got in contact with the police major who did not skip a beat, and immediately allocated additional resources to the area in pursuit of these individuals.”

Councilman Schleifer described the third carjacking;

“The individual was getting out of his car and these three guys came up to him, put a crowbar in his door, preventing him from closing his door. They took off with that car which was a Chevy Impala which they later used to get to the fourth incident, which occurred at the corner of Szold and Bonnie.”

The only car still missing is the Honda Accord, Councilman Schleifer noted at the briefing.

The teen was arrested Sunday evening, on Eutaw Place near Robert Street, and investigators say they expect additional arrests to be made in connection with the carjackings.

Since the suspect is a juvenile, his identity was not released.

“I just ask of you, what trajectory do we think that this young man is going in, if other facets of the criminal justice system don’t intervene and do what they can to stop it,” Smith said at the briefing. “We’re tasked with arresting him for a crime that was committed, but we don’t want this to escalate. An armed carjacking is a violent crime."

According to investigators, the series of carjackings may be connected to a gang.

The incidents remain under investigation.

"The collaboration between the community and the officers, we want to stress that for the rest of the city," Smith said Monday. "Don't allow these folks to come into your communities and wreak havoc and accept it. Do something about it. They did something about it yesterday."
