Baltimore, MD – Feb. 19, 2017 - On Sunday, February 26, Yeshivas Chofetz Chaim/Talmudical Academy of Baltimore will host a historic and monumental groundbreaking which will launch a massive construction project, expanding TA’s campus from 9.5 acres to 11.5 acres, and adding two new buildings, totaling 70,000 square feet of educational space.

This exciting project is taking place during an illustrious time in TA’s history, as the yeshivah is currently celebrating its centennial year. Thus, they are literally laying the groundwork for the next century of Torah at the yeshivah.

Preperations are near complete and the TA family looks forward to greeting the communityas they join in this historic and monumental groundbreaking

YCC/TA was founded in 1917 by Rabbi Avraham Nachman Schwartz, as the Hebrew Parochial School. At the time, it was the only day school in the United States outside of New York.  Over the years, the yeshivah became a pillar of the Baltimore community, and countless members of the Baltimore community today received their chinuch at this distinguished institution.

Furthermore, TA is proud to count among its alumni, from the past 100 years, many distinguished talmidei chachamim and leaders of Jewish communities around the world. Some of these include Harav Aharon Feldman, shlita; Harav Shlomo Miller, shlita, Rosh Kollel of Kollel Avreichim of Toronto; Harav Yisroel Newman, shlita, Rosh Yeshivah of Beis Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, Rabbi Zelig Pliskin, Rabbi Sheftel Neuberger, Rabbi Israel Miller, z”l, former Senior Vice President of Yeshiva  University, Rabbi Aaron Leibtag, Rabbi of Kehilath Jacob Beth Samuel in Chicago; Mr. Eli Schlossberg, Mr. Ezra Dabah, former CEO of The Children’s Place; and Dr. Joel Fleishman, first Senior Vice President of Duke University, and many more.

The current campus on Old Court Road was built in 1968 for 460 students.  However, the yeshivah has experience exponential growth, b’siyatta diShmaya, and today, the school’s enrollment has passed 1000 students, bli ayin hara.  The current building is aging significantly; fifteen classes are being held in trailers, and there is simply no room on the campus for any more trailers.  The imperative for additional space has become increasingly urgent over the past few years.

Finally, after many years of hard work, the yeshivah is ready to begin construction of a new, expanded campus, which will include two new buildings, and renovations of the current facility.

The campus will include the Rabbi Samuel and Zehava Friedman High School Building, dedicated by the Friedman Family, the Foxman Bais Medrash for the z’chus (merit) of Isadore and Fannie Foxman a’h, dedicated by the Foxman Family, and a preschool building.

The new buildings will encompass 70,000 square feet, and will be fully equipped, state of the art facilities.  In order to make room for these new buildings, TA has purchased several homes adjacent to the school’s current property, and Mr. Howard Brown of David S. Brown Enterprises has already begun work on the demolition on these homes.

Sunday’s groundbreaking ceremony will celebrate this exciting milestone. An uplifting program has been planned, and will include an address by Harav Aharon Feldman, shlita, a member of TA’s first graduating class of TA, in 1947.

Another highlight will be the beginning of the writing of a sefer Torah, which is being donated to TA in honor of their 100th anniversary, by Mr. and Mrs. Ari and Shoshana Krupp, Mr. and Mrs. Barry and Harriet Ray and their families.  (Mr. Ari Krupp was a past chairman of the board for TA.) The hachnasas sefer Torah will bezras Hashem coincide with the completion of the new buildings, which is anticipated to take place in approximately one and a half years.

There are many people who deserve much thanks for their efforts in making the dream of this new building a reality, including the lay leadership and administrative staff at the yeshivah.  Of special note is Chairman of the Board, Mr. Peretz Wertenteil, who has been very active in securing pledges for the building, and Mr. Chaim Wealcatch, a past chairman of the board, who has similarly been very involved as Chairman of Development for the new construction.

The entire Baltimore community is invite to attend the Groundbreaking Ceremony, and celebrate the explosive growth of this school, which has served our community so well for the past 100 years. With this monumental undertaking, TA is now poised to enter its second century, ready to continue being mechanech future generations of students al taharas hakodesh.
