Baltimore, MD - Feb. 6, 2017 - On Sunday, January 22, Ohel Yaakov Congregation celebrated a hachnasas sefer Torah, welcoming a brand new sefer Torah to the shul. Ohel Yaakov had celebrated a hachnasas sefer Torah just a few months ago, before Rosh Hashanah, welcoming an older sefer Torah that had been fixed up. This time, the shul celebrated the donation of a brand new sefer Torah.

Mr. Moshe Markowitz has been working with Rabbi Yisroel Diamond and Rabbi Peretz Dinovitz since last March to secure a new sefer Torah for the shul, in memory of his father, Rabbi Hersh Markowitz (Zvi Aryeh ben Shlomo Nissan) and his uncle, Rabbi Yaakov Markowitz, (Yaakov Zecharya ben Shlomo Nissan).  As it turned out, the hachnasas sefer Torah for the new sefer Torah took place on the 13th yahrtzeit of Rabbi Hersh Markowitz.

The festivities began with a final kesivos osiyos at the home of Rabbi Peretz Dinovitz, Rav of Ohel Yaakov Congregation, with the participation of many community Rabbanim.  Once the sefer Torah was completed, a procession led the new sefer Torah from Rabbi Dinowitz’s home to the shul, a few blocks away. Inside the shul, there was much leibidig dancing, until the new sefer Torah was placed in the aron kodesh.

Later in the day, a seudah was held for the Markowitz family and some community Rabbanim.  Rabbi Peretz Dinowitz addressed the seudah, recalling how both Markowitz brothers were an integral part of Ohel Yaakov for decades, and were very involved in many aspects of the kehillah.

Mr. Moshe Markowitz discussed the mitzvah of kesivas sefer Torah. He related how both his father and his uncle, who were teachers at the Beth Jacob Congregation Hebrew School for approximately 40 years, had many talmidim, and were mekarev many to Torah and mitzvos.  When the Tanna, Harav Chananya ben Tradyon was being burnt with a sefer Torah wrapped around his body, he proclaimed that the parchment was burning, but the letters were flying up to Shamayim.   The letters, which are representative of the neshamos of Klal Yisrael, will live forever.

Rabbis Hirsch and Yaakov Markowitz lived by this credo, and believed wholeheartedly in the potential of every talmid, and therefore were able to successfully reach so many talmidim.

Mr. Yisroel Markowitz discussed the legacy of his father and uncle, and how they must be schepping so much nachas to see the fruits of their labors, including a vibrant kehillah, grandchildren who are all Torah Jews, and a wife and children who are carrying on their legacies of chessed, hachnasas orchim, tefillah, and especially, concern for the chinuch of every Jewish neshamah.
