Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has barred a reporter for a Baltimore radio station from attending any more of her weekly press conferences, claiming he had a pattern of aggressive behavior.

The Baltimore Brew first reported on the email sent to the news director of WYPR-FM, asking that P. Kenneth Burns refrain from attending future such sessions. Burns is a former reporter for WBAL NewsRadio 1090.

“Please take notice that effective immediately, the Mayor has declined to grant her discretionary access to Kenneth Burns of WYPR to attend these press conferences," read the email from press secretary Anthony McCarthy.

McCarthy, who worked for state Sen. Catherine Pugh's mayoral campaign, will likely stay on if Pugh wins the general election in November.

The Brew cites two sources in reporting Rawlings-Blake was angered when Burns asked whether she would need to go to Annapolis to lobby for changes in state law pertaining to the Baltimore Police Department. He attempted to press her several times on the question, which she did not answer. WYPR news director Joel McCord is at a loss.

Though Rawlings-Blake and McCarthy haven't gone into details on what exactly led to the ban, the mayor remained combative about the ban on Twitter.

Burns is vice president of the Maryland professional chapter of The Society of Professional Journalists. In a statement by the regional chapter (which includes other mid-Atlantic state), officials decried the move by Rawlings-Blake and called for evidence of her claim that Burns is anything other than an aggressive reporter.

"We feel this is an unacceptable abuse of power. Elected officials cannot and should not be permitted to pick and choose which reporters cover them," they said. "The consequences of this violation of press freedom are disastrous for a community, which relies on quality investigative journalism to keep public officials accountable."
