Baltimore Police say the officer who was injured late Wednesday chasing suspected carjackers in Cherry Hill accidentally shot himself in the wrist, and was not struck by a round from the suspects as was earlier reported.

The officer, a 15-year member of the force and military veteran, suffered non-life threatening injuries, police spokesman T.J. Smith said.

Authorities say the wounded officer and another plainclothes detective pulled over a vehicle believed to be connected to the earlier carjacking that occurred in Federal Hill. As they approached, at least one suspect opened fire.

Deputy Commissioner Jason Johnson said at a news conference Thursday afternoon that the officer was in good condition at a local hospital.

Smith says the carjacking involved three suspects, but just two were involved in the shooting.

The police special investigation response team will look into the incident, which may result in retraining or other discipline for the officer.

Police are talking to persons of interest in regards to the carjacking suspects, who remain at large
