Baltimore, MD - May 1, 2016 - It was a beautiful, albeit windy, morning at Pimlico Race Course as Baltimore's Jewish community members joined together to burn their chometz in preparation for the first Pesach Seder.  This year marks the fourth annual Chometz Burning and Food Drive, sponsored by Baltimore City Council President Jack Young’s office, in partnership with Comprehensive Housing Assistance, Inc. (CHAI) and Park Heights Renaissance (PHR).  The Chesed Fund worked with Jack Young’s office to coordinate the city agencies that were instrumental in helping to make this day possible.

The event was held at the Pimlico Race Course Clubhouse Parking Lot, from 6:30 – 11:30 a.m. and over 5,000 Jews from all denominations were on hand to participate. Park Heights Renaissance will be delivering the food donations to area churches, all residing in the 21215 zip code.

“At the opening of the Seder we declare, ‘Whoever is hungry - let him come and eat!’” Mitch Posner, CHAI Executive Director said. “What better way for the Jewish community of Baltimore to approach the holiday than by sharing our bountiful food resources with our neighbors in need? CHAI is proud to play a role in facilitating this collaborative 'mitzvah' project." CHAI is an agency of The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore

Four years ago, Betsy Gardner, Baltimore City Council President liaison, contacted CHAI about partnering with Park Heights Renaissance and donating food in an effort to uplift and unify the Northern and Southern Park Heights communities.

“It’s a great mitzvah being able to coordinate this event year after year,” says Gardner. “Making sure our community has a safe and secure location to participate in this tradition is top priority. Special thanks to the Maryland Jockey Club for their ongoing partnership, for without them, none of this would be possible.”
