BWI Marshall Airport's passenger numbers cruised to a new record in 2015.

Gov. Larry Hogan announced Thursday that 23,823,532 commercial passengers flew through BWI last year, 6.8 percent up from 2014.

The last six months of the year each set monthly passenger records, and 2015 was the first year BWI crossed the 23 million mark.

“The record-setting growth reflects the strength of Maryland and our commitment to ensure that BWI Marshall remains a successful transportation and economic development resource,” Hogan said in a statement.  “BWI Marshall is a convenient, growing global gateway for the Baltimore-Washington region, and all of Maryland.”

Officials say the growth was mostly driven by international routes. Norwegian Air and WOW Air have introduced service or announced plans to expand to destinations like the French West Indies, Reykjavik, Stockholm and Bristol, England. The charter carrier Swift Air also started offering flights to Havana. International traffic was up 31.9 percent on the year, with 1,140,144 total international passengers, also a record.

The previous total passenger record of 22,679,887, was set in 2012.

Year-end statistics for Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Dulles International Airport were not available. However, as of November 2015, BWI claimed a 36.1 percent market share of the region's passengers, according to statistics from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which operates Reagan and Dulles. However, Dulles operates a little more than 80 percent of the area's international traffic.

“We thank our travelers for making 2015 a record year,” BWI CEO Ricky Smith said.  “BWI Marshall provides excellent customer service and quality airline choices for residents, businesses, and visitors.  We look forward to working with our airline partners to continue our success.”
